It is problematic at best to suppose that anyone possesses the felicity of composition required to truly express the essence of Bill Crisp. He was a man who earned the respect to be addressed as Dr. Crisp and William. But only a two minute conversation with him revealed him to be Bill.

He was one of the most outwardly focused people one could ever know. He loved his family not as an extension of himself but as a collective for whom he had responsibility to nurture and guide.

Bill was one of those unique people who when he asked how you were, he really wanted to know the answer. When you read his Curriculum Vitae and list of Academic Publications you realize this was a brilliant and accomplished man. He just managed to hide behind the smile of a leprechaun.

That combination of the drive to achieve and the sense to enjoy the journey were at the core of his life. It helped him provide a healing touch to his patients, a plethora of ideas to improve healthcare in the future and create a new generation of practitioners with the same commitments. Not a bad legacy.

But there was so much more to Bill. He was a champion in words and deeds when it came to the arena of women’s health. He embraced new technology with the excitement of a teenager. He saw the status quo as the enemy of progress not a golden calf to be worshipped at the altar of mediocrity.

He attacked his own illness with a strength and dignity that shone like a beacon in the night. It was a woeful experience for those who underestimated him despite some physical limitations.

President Kennedy was fond of quoting the Greeks with their definition of happiness:

“True happiness is the full use of your powers along lines of excellence in a life affording scope.”

It is an admirable criteria and part of the reason, that Bill Crisp was a happy man.
