Ms. Ernestine

September 27, 2016

I met Ms.  Ernestine Mathis in person in 1996 for the first time.   We were on School Program at Chat Co in Cusseta,  Ga. In the late 90s.

She performed with others on the stage of The Historical Liberty Theatre Cultural Center as Sister Moore in James Baldwin's Amen Corner (photo with African Attire).

Ernestine was Columbus's 1st woman of color to broadcast on rado station WOKS AM 1340 during the 60s and also in Manchester,  Ga.

The photo with her on the far right is from her days at WOKS with the Rudy "The Duece," Rutherford, Wibston "HoundDog" Callaway and "The Baron"!  In this photo,  Ed Mendek a/k/a Dr. Jive is presenting an award to Columbus's own and National Recording Artist Peggy and JoJo Benson.

She had so many talents!  Writing,  singing and the having the most beautiful broadcast voice which has been described as melodious are just a few!
