To our dear friend Mr Commey

Even though we had never met not knew Mr Commey before Daniel arrived in Owerri, Nigeria in 1982 we quickly became very good friends and he took us under his wings. The whole of the Commey family soon became our friends and the strength of our friendship became much clearer when he travelled all the way to Accra to attend our wedding the following year. We were also privileged to have his daughter Obiokor as one of our flower girls at the wedding. As a young couple, we were privileged to have him as our mentor. We found ourselves hosting each other in our homes on some occasions and a few things which stood out for us about Mr Commey were his devotion to his family and friends and excellent culinary skills.

You will always be in our hearts.
May you rest in the bosom of our loving father.

Revelation 21:4
He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.

Job 14:14
If a man dies, shall he live again? All the days of
my service I would wait, till my renewal should come.

Dada Dada Dada!!!!
I know you are resting peacefully in the Lord. Amen!!!
Dada you were such a caring and loving father every child will be proud of, your gentle smile, few words but full of wisdom and intelligent sayings.
As we began growing, we enjoyed so much exceptional love and care a loving father would give to her children.  You supported us in any way that you can and we did not lack anything. Because of the nature of your work, we found ourselves always changing over to different schools at any point that you changed jobs or was transferred. Sometimes we complained missing our previous friends we left in the other schools but you keep telling us make new ones, get used to the changes, and adjust so then we found it as an adventure.
When Mama’s work took her outside of from Accra, at our young age, you took care of us alone; made sure we follow our daily routine for getting ready for school, and being on time all times. Back from school, our homework was your priority and ensured we check all before we get to bed. You were good in Mathematics so we had no problem cracking our minds to get supposed difficult questions solved. However, when it got to French you will say show it to Mama. We remember one time Mama gave you a written instruction in French for the housekeeper to carry out a duty you actually understood the reverse. It read “Les enfant a deja mange”, meaning the children have already eaten, you interpreted it as you rather had to give them food. This we always use in teasing you up until now when it comes up for discussion.
You were our special home teacher and will always push us to do our best in school, and that the sky is our limit. You made time and took us out for fun times because you believed all work and no play ........We really enjoyed family and had the best of childhood times. Few times, you would scold us for a wrong done but quickly we are friends again.
You always go the extreme out of your comfort zone to offer care, love and support in every way you can no matter what it will cost you to achieve that task for us all. This brings so much smiles on our faces and same beam of satisfaction on yours as well. Even in your ageing you still ask what, can I do to support? Are we all right???.
I remember among many of your exceptions, there was a time I needed to pick up a document at Tema and there was a deadline but the nature of my work wouldnt allow me. I mentioned to you, and you asked where and I showed you.

The following day to my amazement you came to my office was surprised though because I was not expecting you. Then you handed me an envelope and said I brought your document. What??? I asked, Dada but I never knew you would go pick it up and you dont have means of transport. You said have it I didn't want you to worry so I decided to pick it up and also you can meet the deadline.
Many more of these exceptional care, love, and sacrifices. You acted so much like a father to the children doing the most to make them comfortable when the need arises.
You pampered us Dada. I call you Olu Olu severally and you respond yeah, then we laugh .
Oh Olu Olu Olu.
Dada!! Few times you do get ill, soon, got better, and joined us home and we are all happy. We knew this was one of those and when you were taken to the Legon Hospital on that Monday and was admitted, we had the faith that this was one of the normal little illnesses. Little did we know that you would not come home to join us.
Oooh Dada, we are still in shock, grief and tears because you are missed very much. Who will ask, what can I do to help, support or even say, I know you are busy send me I can do this errand for you.
Dada, It was our prayer that you will live longer to see many enjoyable times with the family. We will miss your soft smiles which says a lot!!!  We cannot say much because we cannot question the plans of God. We know you are in a good place, where there is no pain.
We believe by now you have joined the heavenly hosts singing your favourite Ga Hymns, “Ke Nyomo Danmo Mli le, mei fee ate mi no, Kristo Asafo bibio, ka ha otsui faa tutu ko and many of your favourite melodies.

Dada Wo odjogban!!!
Dada Dada sleep well the bosom of the Lord

FAREWELL MESSAGE FROM LoSIN

"If we live, we live for the Lord; and if we die, we die for the Lord. So, whether we live or die, we belong to the Lord".Rom.14:8

Dada popularly referred to as Grandpa Commey by majority of LoSIN members, was one of our strong pillars.
Despite his age, he made it to major programs - even camp meetings, without fail. He would always be seen in the company of his dear wife, children and grandchildren. He participated fully in the programs not regarding his frail situation. Such a wonderful example! Like Abraham, he could be entrusted with the secret things of God revealed to him for his children and descendants forever because he commanded his household after the things of God.

Dada was a very affable person and endeared himself to many.
One can easily remember his powerful dance moves and accompanying smiles. Age was not a barrier for him at all.

He took the word of God seriously and was quick to remind one of the many prophecies and prophetic songs released by the Holy Spirit. One of such is " Can't you see your blessings coming?"
Oh yes, Grandpa, we see them coming! It was and still is our wish that we would have seen these blessings with you. However, we thank God for the faith strengthening actions you exhibited. You were an encourager.
Thank you for your great contribution to the world, to the body of Christ and to the Ladies of Substance International Network (LoSIN).

Sleep well valiant soldier of Christ till we meet again.

On behalf of LoSIN

Then I heard a voice from heaven say "write this, Blessed are who are dead in the Lord. From now on... (Rev 4:13)
Eben and I met in Princess Marie Louis (PML) Hospital. He was a senior nutrition officer and I was a nutrition assistant working on analysis of a nutrition survey which involved calculation of figures. Eben being good at maths helped me with the calculations. The calculations turned into romance and we got married in 1969 and were soon blessed with four beautiful children. During our 52 years of marriage, Eben had always been there for me.
He always wanted the best for Julie.
Eben, during your last visit to see your doctor and she was done with you, you told her "It's my wife's turn" when you knew very well she was not my doctor. For you "It was always"my wife, my wife". You ran all the errands for me and you often asked "Julie meni ota)?..tsumi.
I have been a spoilt child (wife). You stayed long hours with me anytime I was admitted to hospital.
Now when I call you in the mornings to sing our devotional hymn "Leebi la l3 eteshi"...you do not respond. Eben where are you? I believe you are resting where there is no more sorrow, weeping nor pain. Eben you faithfully kept your marriage vows "For better,For worse, in sickness and in health.

Wonderful Husband, Father and Grandpa.
You were loving, caring, selfless and tolerant.
Daa, Bro Eben, Osofo Commey, Award winner. You did not wait to receive your award. Eben you have a better award in heaven.
Sleep peacefully in The Lord till we meet again.

My grandfather was an honourable man, generous, funny and gifted with astonishing talents that made him relate to people easily. He was a free flowing person dedicated to the Christian religion. We always visited him on the weekends and holidays. We will play local games such as oware and ludo as he always said "these games would help you to be skillful in all aspects of life and help in decision making during difficult times". I personally went to my grandparents house when I was on vacation to help with numerous duties. I will normally ask him if he was ok and he will say " Yes I am fine" and raise his two fingers, symbolizing peace or victory or give me a thumbs up. Most of the time I accompanied him on countless walks in the neighbourhood. On various occasions when we went to the 37 military hospital he would buy his favourite popcorn laced with with Nido and will ask grandma " Julie osum)) malt k3 fita he aloo ?" meaning "would you like malt in addition ?" and will also ask for his famous bucket chicken for KFC on our way back from the hospital. He really influenced me with most of the actions he took and taught me a lot of general knowledge, lessons and how to be humble, patient, generous, calm and peaceful. We have a lot of good memories of you that would stay with us forever. May your soul rest in perfect peace♥️

When I was told to write my last words to you to be very honest I didn’t know where to start from I didn’t know how to put my feelings and thoughts into words with all the sadness and pain I feel inside. I still can’t believe you are gone Grandpa. You have always been there for us. Always encouraging me with your words of wisdom. Grandpa today, I can say I am where I am today because of all your sacrifices you made for me. You fought for me and made sure you did everything in your power just to make sure I had the best of everything. You were very patient and kind most of all very generous. You never hesitated to help anyone even when you had no idea about the issue but out of curiosity you would ask “What is it” what is the problem? Always wanting to help then Grandma will say “Eii Eben Nam) Ts3 Bo who called you”?and then you will just smile.
I miss you sooo much and I still can’t believe you are gone. Who am I going to gossip with? who are we going to tease now that you are not here with us? You had a heart soo big to welcome and accommodate everyone. You are really God sent to us all. I miss your smiles, your jokes and your stories you told us when we were young.
I don’t want to say goodbye soon infact I wouldn’t want to say goodbye at all but the Good Lord has called you to come rest in his kingdom. Grandpa rest well. Rest in perfect peace. We love you.

"If we live, we live for the Lord; and if we die, we die for the Lord. So whether we live or die, we belong to the Lord" (Rom:14:8)

The loss of a loved one is already devastating for anyone. When the loss is unexpected, the pain is beyond words.

I have known my Father-in-Law since 1988 and I have had a very good relationship with him ever since.

I cannot recall a single moment he complained about anything or anybody. He took me in as his own daughter and made me feel part of the family. His "pet name" for me was "Awula" to wit "My Lady".

We were lucky to move into the neighbourhood, within 5 kilometers of Grandpa and Grandma's Pension Home.

My In-laws supported me in various ways; by taking care of the kids during midterm, vacation, as well as my travels in and out of the country.

We would normally spend Sunday afternoon with them and enjoy Grandma's delicious meals, whiles listening to Grandpa's stories, jokes and pieces of advice.
We would typically tease him by shouting Oluuuuu, Grandpaaaà.

On his appointment dates at the hospital, I would pick him up early in the morning from home and drop him off at 37 Military Hospital.
But what facinated me most about him was his treatment of his wife, my Mother-in Law.  He would hold on to Grandma's bag tightly, try to walk his wife to the car half-way, but before he could blink his eyes, Grandma would be in the car and burst into laughter saying "Oluuuuu, hurry up, quick, quick, quick. He would then smile and say hmmmm Julie, I was trying to help however I could but you have won, by the way is there anything you will need???

In the midst of our deep sorrow, we celebrate your wonderful life. We cannot even begin to enumerate all that we will miss now that you are gone. You meant so much to us.

And so, today, we come to bury your body but not your spirit. We come to bury your mind but not your dreams. We come to bury your voice but not your message. We come to bury your hands but not your good works. We come to bury your heart but not your love.

Your endless love will continue to bind us together as a family.

Your legacy will be lived. Rest in perfect peace.

Yes Daa, as I will typically respond after you have shouted my name Obliteyyy.
My Dad was simply the best in all spheres of fatherhood. You brought us up in the best way you could, making sure we had a strong christian background as the basis for our life's journey. You made so many sacrifices for us and made sure we never lacked anything.
I was a typical boisterous young boy, playing "gutter to gutter" soccer at South La Estates, getting myself dirty playing "Pilolo", "Dikuss" and "Alokoto", till i heard my fathers VW 441 car approaching. Daa however managed to steer me through all these to be a successful young man. You will always carry me along on your numerous visits to your friends and acquaintances and introduced me to investments and savings early in my life. I had the opportunity of supervising renovation works at the Dansoman house on his behalf at the age of 17 and later on in life the Pension home at Agbogba.
I have learnt so much from him and have imbibed from him the sense of humility, respect for all manner of Persons irrespective of their social status, age, religious affiliation, showing friendliness to all manner of Persons and making sure I greet anybody whose eyes meet mine whether in the Neighborhood, Office area, Construction Site, Church, Meeting etc.
I am really going to miss you Olu, Daa and my friend and Advisor who always encouraged me during tough times.
God will surely be with us till we meet again. Ya w) ojogbaa.

There are lot of things I would like to say, a lot of memories popping up in my head, still in a state of confusion. Being asked to write a tribute looks like an easy task. But as you start you realize that you might end up writing more than a book because of the good times. “Granpi granpo” as I called him was the best grandfather anyone could have. He was always there at our service and always wanted us to be happy. When we were young we went to him to help with our Ga homework. He would look for old books just so he can help us, on weekend when we visit he always had a story to tell us and we would all laugh. He had a good sense of humor. I remember him waking up in the morning and say Julie "Is there anything you want from the market" in Ga. He loved shopping for his wife and always ready to go to the market. He was always there for us and always ready to do what makes us happy. I remember going to the hospital with him and he would continuously ask me,"ats3 grandma” (Has the doctor called Grandma) Even though they hadn't called him yet. He always put others needs before his. I remember happy times with him. In his old age when we go for walks to exercise his legs we would sing "Day O and Jamaican Farewell" by Harry Belafonte, and walk like we were in primary school marching at assembly. We enjoyed old songs together and he always wondered where I heard those songs from as they were much older than me. I can go on and on if I have to talk about my grandfather. He was a good influence in our lives and we would miss him very much. We would continue to walk in his steps as he taught us that Family always comes first.

My grandfather and I were very close. I remember vividly the early morning rides to school, the games we used to play together as well as the performances I used to entertain him with when he visited our home on weekends. He gave me advice, told me jokes and many stories both inspiring and humorous. My grandfather was a man of many attributes but to me his most dominant attribute was that he was a selfless man. All throughout my years I have watched my grandfather go above and beyond for everyone around him. He will forever be in our hearts. Rest in perfect peace Grandpa.

To a beloved uncle.
It’s hard to say goodbye. Our comfort is that you are resting with our Lord.
You were a huge part of our childhood, from our holidays in Labadi and times spent together in Lagos. I remember the journeys from Achimota to Dansoman taking us back and forth for yet another weekend sleepover.
As we grew up, you always shared words of wisdom, stable and ever present. We will miss you very much. God be with you till we meet again.

Grandpa was such a role model to all of us. Sweet, wise, full of warmth, humble, very calm, prayerful and funny. He always had jokes that put a smile on our faces. I think I got my goofy attitude from him, always there to entertain us with his dance moves and comments. Grandpa was such a great and patient teacher, every time I had Ga and Science homework, he would stay up with me looking for books that will help me understand my work better. I am still confused and sad that you are no longer here with us, I couldn’t see you and I will never see you again here on earth. But, I am comforted by the fact that you are in a better place right now, dancing with the angels in your white gown and shining as bright as the star. I am glad we were able to make such great memories and I’ll forever hold unto them. You went too soon, I wish I could say goodbye, I am going to miss you dearly. There is no Grandpa in the world that could ever take your place, Rest in peace and till we meet again in heaven. We love you.

Grandpa was a spiritual, knowledgeable, and very approachable man. It was always a delight to visit Grandpa and spend time with him. He encouraged me to be spiritual, I always marveled when he told me that he reads the bible from Genesis to Revelations every year. He encouraged me to read the Bible for myself and get to know God more. I remember many selfless deeds that Grandpa did for us grandchildren, and he always did his best with a smile. It was heartwarming to see him busy trying to make things work so his grandchildren could be happy. What I remember so vividly is that about a week before he was hospitalized, I went to visit him and I remember asking him whilst he sat in his bed what he was thinking about, and after a while, he responded by saying he prays that he gets well soon because he didn’t want us to worry about him. I will forever remember Grandpa for the amazing man that he was and I will forever cherish the memories I have of him. Love you, Grandpa.

The Man Who raised this woman

March 16, 2021
"Ebenezer Commey"...Komieteh !
Let's do a little detour into the 1970s and a little slide down memory lane. Dada was aware he had a child different from the others and he was ready to fight for her to make it out of her shell. Usually I would have a "gbeshi" and would refuse to budge as a child. Dada would know exactly when it was time to pick me up, still asleep, bathe and get me all powdered and dressed then put me in his VW jalopy to get me to school.  Shy and scared of school, I wasn't about to be educated without kicking up a fight. So patient Dada would ensure I entered the school but I would find a way  on on my tiny feet to end up at our home by myself because it was just down the road in South La. And then he found a plan. After work we will share our day. So I would run up to the door as soon as I heard his car, open the door and he would say "Et)mi eeeeiii" and I would quip "et)mi kpakpa" hahah. I loved that routine. And so ended the difficulties with my schooling. Otherwise I had hoped I had almost convinced him that he should allow me to sleep because I would sell tomatoes eventually.
Dada My Business Partner:
Back to reality. I met my dream of selling albeit not tomatoes. In my early years of university I started to sell and Dada helped me. I would buy jewelry from Benin or stuff I wanted to sell and he would give me money to buy more. I still owe him. And soon I found a career path in marketing...just the right thing to do to sell my childhood dream tomatoes. (Lol)
Dada was my specially designed father who knew exactly what I had to be without voicing it. Dada had a careful eye on me. He must have said to himself I suppose that I have to get this girl to achieve her potential.

Dada The Artist:
A sharp and creative  imagination is a gift I got from Dada's artistic abilities. He was great in calligraphy, painting and drawing and he helped my imagination to grow as well. So he would buy me story books to read because I loved to read. One of my favourites from Nigeria is "Eze Goes to School".  Now that's funny, he knew I needed it. But he also ensured I had Enid Blyton,  read about Huckleberry Fynn and when I run out of books Dada had a lot of fancy big books to read including the dictionary. Do you remember the Famous Five?  That's my Dad's choice of books too apart from Modesty Blaise for the older ines
Dada raised this woman with colour. He would drive me to my GTV drama rehearsals and encourage my friends and I tilll we got featured in TV Theatre.

Dada My Mentor:
Dada didnt leave anything to chance in raising this woman...he selected my friends and ensured he knew each friend's parents. I thought he was a cunning but protective Dad. If I had to go out he would say sure let me drop you. And that's how he and Dr. George Appenteng managed to keep us girls close to them. Where he couldn't connect with a parent he was happy for me to have people come home and sleepover.
Now I hear him saying I should stand well.

Dada my Coach:
Dada knew how to make this woman a confident one. Days I would come home form work and report to him "Da someone said something nasty to me" ..He would ask " And what did you tell him"? If I said nothing, he would tell me exactly what reply to give next time someone was unpleasant. What I recognize is that Dada had an eye on me to help make me a  confident woman. Now I recall he has done this all my life.
Once long ago a pupil teacher beat me till I had a cut on my skin over an exercise I couldn't grasp in maths quantitative. When he got home and he was told he said nothing but was unhappy.  In the morning he rode with me to school. With his nice but decisive smile, he asked the headmaster to summon the teacher and told him in front of me that if the teacher had an issue with me he Dada should be called first.
Today I recognize what this man gave me.
I recognize that he had an assignment to groom me  for excellence and he did it for me. While working in marketing, I would often be on TV talking about brands. Auntie Anyema had the sole honour of being asked several times when she checked on me if she hadn't seen me on TV yet. Hahaha.
He didn't just do the polishing of this woman he also ensured she had depth of character,  down to earth and humble. Our favourite discussion around pay for my job was a cleaning contract he gave me in his office at Meals for Millions. I was to use my cleaning skills to work as a cleaner while on holiday and I scrubbed the floors of the whole office. We have a story about that.
Dada the senior citizen:
Dada for our last lap with you, you missed one critical assignment for you and Pastor Eric Awuku to finally wear your tail coats. You will miss the brunch trips on Sundays  ooo. At bed time you won't have anyone cover you with your cloth ooo.
But I can share with everyone here Dada, that I know even for this season you wanted me to be prepared to be strong so you dropped so many hints till the last day.  What can I say? I am not only a product of your gracious way of making a child into a woman who could blossom, but I am also a testimony that patient work pays off. You were deliberate and patient to the last minute when I dressed you up and covered you with a comforting cloth just the way you like us to do. But by evening you were gone. Is that what you were waiting for? For your favourite routine of being tucked in?
Thank you Dada for making it possible for me to always shine.  Now I dare not respond to friends when they call because I don't want to acknowledge to them that you're not here. Your impact on me reached all.my friends and colleagues at work. Marigold came to live with us and was raised as one  your children so I share this tribute for both of us. And to all my friends who enjoyed the benefit of you carrying water constantly to Aburi Girls we say God bless you Dada. Where are you? Are you alright? Let's hear from you ok. And rest in The Lord. I don't know where you are strolling leisurely right now but if you need me I'm here for you ok. B'kor! Yes Da,  Bkor! Yes Da Bkor, You can still call me many many times like you used to. And if per chance the angels tell you that I've gone to work I pray for you that one of them will assist you and meet your every need onu. Osofo Commey Your departure has made me sober. Stay well where you are onu. Komieteh na mc fe mi en3! Bye bye.
