Celebrating the wonderful journey of Ebun Adefunmilayo Oni.

"God created the universe; Christians believe in the biblical story of creation. If we Christians do not understand the spiritual mystery, it is because God has not revealed the whole spectacular events to us. Nevertheless, we ought to meditate individually and collectively on these events.

The cosmic light that was first created by God holds the mystery of the length of the day that God first created. This first cosmic light differs from the light in the firmament of the heavens created on the fourth day. Specifically, God made these lights to be for signs and seasons and for days and years.

Within our limited scientific knowledge, we base our times, days, seasons and years on these lights in the firmament of heavens, as commanded by God. If it is the will of God, we can still extend the horizon of our scientific knowledge to understand more spectacular events associated with the billions of stars in the firmament of the universe. Ages of rocks, animals, and plants are based on these times. But we cannot claim with certainty that the scientific laws based on these times - and deduced from our limited sphere of observations, within the limited space of our existence - are without some fundamental errors as human beings.

But God is not limited by space and time, because He created both. He can make space and time as small as He wishes or as big as He wants. The fool has said in his heart 'There is no God' (Psalms 14 verse 1)"

Prof Oni was my PhD thesis advisor - so I became one of mama's children. Right off the bat that statement showcases her ability to care deeply about both the quality of the science and the welfare of her students - so much so that we all instinctively thought of her as a mother. She played a pioneering role in the field of solid earth physics in Nigeria and a prominent global role in the advance of the subject (my first two (international) publications were with her). She was an incredible teacher as well, and I could still clearly remember her lectures (somehow dramatic) on the breakdown of classical physics as a first-year undergraduate student. During the years as her student, I sensed that her deeply held desire was to leave a legacy that includes a strong solid earth physics group at Ibadan. I think all her students would understand this and would feel the need to be part of it. In a way though, her legacy (through the light she shone) actually lives on in the lives of the many she has touched both as direct students and proto students who now occupy different disciplines and / or professions.

She will be sorely missed but we are comforted because as Christians we know she is in a better place based on her professed Christian faith and life. May her gentle soul rest in peace.

Praying for her children and family, that they have the fortitude to bear the loss. That the wonderful memories she has created with them and others, some of which are shared through this forum, would be a source of comfort.

We wish Mama eternal rest with the Lord. She had a most fulfilling career at the University of Ibadan where she was for many decades a highly respected Professor and Head of Physics. She was widely respected for her seminal publications on Solid Earth Physics in which she was a pioneer. She also established the International Centre for Earth Sciences in Africa (ICESA) and hosted a major Conference in the early 1990s at Ibadan. She will be sorely missed by all members of her family (biological and academic). Good night, Mama.

Prof (Mrs) Ebun Oni started off being Muyiwa’s mum but ended up becoming my mum and by extension mum to my siblings also as some of Muyiwa’s siblings were also classmates to my siblings. We therefore had a very close family bond. I can’t remember exactly when and how Muyiwa and I became close buddies, but it had to do with being classmates at UI Staff School, being relatively close neighbors (Ebrohime Road and El kanami Road) and being lovers of football. A great lifelong friendship developed and for a long season Muyiwa and I were inseparable particularly during holidays. Due to this, I saw great deal of mummy.

I have very fond memories of mummy - her intelligence, her special sense of humor, her unique dress style with her long bubus and head gear, her interest in our studies and how we were progressing, her tough no nonsense style balanced with a gentle motherly care and her life of simplicity and contentment. Mummy loved her children and the love rubbed on us her children’s friends. She cared in a manner that was non-intrusive but genuine. As I grew older, she would inquire about any family issue of ours that gave her concern. Even though I did not see much of her in the last couple of decades, she was constantly in my thoughts. I really was hoping to see her when Muyiwa visited with his family. Unfortunately, even though she was physically in the same location, I could not see because her health had started failing.

I am comforted that she lived a life of impact and left behind a legacy of good children and grandchildren, family and friends who are celebrating her at a time like this. May The Lord comfort Martin, Muyiwa, Seun, Gbenga, Adeola, the Adegbohungbes and other family and friends.
Adieu Mummy!

Tribute to Mummy Prof.
My first contact with Prof Ebun Oni as I recall, was at my Engagement to Akinola Yoloye, her God-Son and the son of her classmate and friend in 1994. She participated actively at the event alongside other 'Old Girls' of Methodist Girls High School, Lagos. She was a wonderful Daughter of Zion (I can still picture her sitting in her usual spot at the Chapel of the Resurrection, University of Ibadan), a great Professor of Physics. Mama Oni was also a prolific writer!!! My family benefited immensely from her prowess in this regard as we got a fair share of the expository books penned by her, pro bono.

Sincere and deep condolences to Seun, Adeola and their brothers. Mummy Prof lived well, she left her footprints in the sands of time. Death for her is only the start of a new beginning in the bosom of her Saviour and Lord.

It is well!!!

Professor Ebun Adefunmilayo Oni
         (nee Adegbuhngbe)
Tribute by Mrs V. Olufunke Yoloye

Ebun and I met for the first time in Jan 1945 as two Std V pupils of St Johns School, Iloro, Ilesa. In 1944, Ebun was in Std IV at Iloro and I was in Std IV at Holy Trinity School, Omofe, Ilesa. At that time, St Johns School, Iloro was the only one of the three CMS schools that had Std V and Std VI. The other two had the infant classes 1 and 2, and Std I toStd IV. So pupils in Std IV in the other two schools and one in another town (Ifewara) near Ilesa had to take an entrance examination to compete for one of the two Std V classes in Iloro. I was lucky to be one of the ten pupils who got into Iloro Std V from Omofe.
As the two smallest, and probably the youngest in the class, we naturally became friends. When she later introduced me to her parents, we learnt that her father, Pa Adegbohungbe, had been a teacher at Holy Trinity School, Omofe and had Known my father, Pa Owopetu who was the Baba Egbe of the Holy Trinity Church, Omofe, Ilesa. As time went on, we became closer. After two years in St Johns School, Iloro, Ilesa, we were both admitted into Methodist Girls High School in Dec 1951.
For the nearly 77 years that Ebun and I were together, I knew her to be a very honest and outspoken person. She was always ready to say it as it was no matter whose horse was gored. Even when she knew that being outspoken might get her into trouble, she believed that one should be outspoken as long as what one said was the truth.
Ebun also had unique ideas which many might consider unusual or even weired but which would later be accepted as normal or realistic.
At the time when most people thought engineering was a profession meant for men, Ebun wanted to be an engineer. Even though we did not do enough Science in school to qualify for admission for such a profession, Ebun worked very hard after leaving school to qualify for or admission for engineering in any University. Unfortunately there was no group, government or non government ready to spend money on a girl to study engineering. Today, having a girl studying engineering is not such a taboo. Ebun had no choice but to switch over to Physics. She became a reputable physicist, a reputable professor of physics, and a teacher and mentor of many professors of Physics.
It is now fashionable for many people to drop their Western names. Many decades ago when many people would not dream of such, Ebun dropped her western name and became known more by her Nigerian names - Ebun Adefunmilayo Oni. Hardly anyone who did not go to school with her or who is not her family member, will know she ever had a western name.
Ebun came, she saw, and she conquered. She made her mark and will be remembered by many - family, friends, academic groups and institutions, and many of her former students.
My condolences go to her children; Martin, Muyiwa, Seun, Gbenga, and Deola and their families, and the entire Adegbohungbe family.

TRIBUTE TO A GREAT WOMAN:

My dear aunt and big mummy that we fondly called ‘Mummy Ibadan-The Prof.’
She was a virtuous woman , God-fearing, an achiever, a motivator, a counselor and very hard working woman. I thank God for her life well spent: she was a woman of great inner strength and character who instilled in us including her children, a strong sense of self-worth, determination and values which is evident in our lives today.

May God grant her beautiful soul eternal rest. Amen

Rest in peace Ma.
I have so many fond memories of mama, who i know as my Aunty, my dear Aunty, my late dear mom's close relation who my mom always fondly always called "Ebun". My grades slipped ever so slightly in form 3 or 4 and my mom sent me over to Aunty's house to study with Muyiwa and Aunty also arranged for one of her students to teach me physics . She had lots of words of encouragement and advice. She was a wonderful, hearty Aunty and i last saw her hale and hearty in good spirit when she led choruses and songs ar my mom's wake in 2015.

Rest in peace ma. You are missed

I will always cherish the memory of my late aunt Professor Ebun Adefunmilayo Oni. She was a great woman, highly principled, disciplined, and diligent in all her endeavors. I remember spending several holidays at her home (which was a second home for us). She kept what I will describe as an “open house” – where your privileges were the same as what was obtainable at your own home. She was a second mother to us.

I will never forget the role she played in ensuring that I didn’t lose my admission to the University of Lagos. A computer glitch had resulted in my name not appearing on the list at the admissions office -even though I had a valid admission letter. She came over and accompanied me to the school Senate Building and she ensured they resolved the matter. She was a woman of a strong character who was “no pushover”.

I remember the long hours she spent recording the entire bible in English and Yoruba on tapes and how she freely gave copies to many. She also authored several books on bible knowledge which she distributed freely. Her relentless commitment to the growth of God’s kingdom through the distribution of the bible and the books she authored is highly inspiring.

I thank God for your life dear mama. Rest in peace.

Prof (Mrs) E. Oni..she was not just, “Oh that’s Gbenga’s mum..”, she was my next door Neighbour at #6 El Kanemi Road, University of Ibadan for decades, we lived at #4 and I saw and ran into her almost daily.. quiet, reserved, yet very lively, who spoke with boldness and like she knew what she was talking about. she loved to take walks and briskly too, sometimes she would drive by in her Peugeot 504. She was my Physics lecturer, a very good one at that, she taught me PHY311... classical mechanics and I finished her course in flying colors that’s why I gave her an A for effort, she didn’t just teach she impacted knowledge, I would remember her cause decades later. I can still see her walking down the corridors of the physics department UI, without a care in the world, very African in her dressing, Bubu made from Ankara if my memory serves me well, 34 years later, and turban head wrap. I loved physics and still do and if I could turn back the hands of time I would apply to study physics at the University of Ibadan all over again. I had great lecturers, Prof (Mrs) Ebun Oni was one.
I am saddened by the news, a mother, my Neighbour, my Lecturer. May God grant her eternal rest and may God comfort Gbenga and the entire Oni family today and always.

Her Life

Biography

December 21, 2021
Professor Ebun Adefunmilayo Oni was born on the 21st of May, 1935 in Ilesa, Osun state to the family of Mr. Moses Fadejuwon Adegbohungbe - a teacher, and Secretary to Owa Ajimoko II of Ijesa land (reign: 1942-1956 ) - and Madam Mary Omotola Adegbohungbe, who was also a teacher. Ebun was the first of three children, her siblings were Mr. Tunji Adegbohungbe, and Mr. Olusegun Adegbohungbe, both now deceased.

She is of royal lineage, from the Ijesa royal house of Bilaro - Owa Bilaro (reign: 1681-1690 ). Her paternal great grandfather was Owa Ofokutu, the 27th Owa of Ijesa land (reign: 1846-1857 ).

Pa Fadejuwon was fastidious about education and completely gender neutral in his parenting; personally teaching Ebun at a very young age the rudiments of mathematics, and impressing on her its importance. And likely installing in her the bedrock of self-confidence and a keen awareness of her antecedents that enabled her to excel in a profession dominated by men. She doted on him.

In turn, Ebun is mother to Martin, Ademuyiwa, Oluwaseun, Oluwagbemiga, and Adeola; and grandmother to Isabel Adenike, Grace Ayo, Oluwademilade Babalola, Annabel Ebun, and Morenikejimi Maria.

A respected Research Physicist, Professor Oni is widely published in peer-reviewed journals. A published author, Ebun wrote several books including the Know Your Bible series and “Memoir of a Woman Physicist”.

She was a Professor of Physics and a devout Christian; for her, a seamless continuum in her discovery of the wonder of God and Creation.
