With all of Ed's energy, creativity, dedication and warmth it is so hard to believe that Ed has died, and at only 63. He always had a smile, a story, and a unique idea. Ed was such a colleague and such a friend. He had several careers in one; he was always the consummate physician in all his roles. Yes, he greatly contributed to antiemetic research and care, but he also had marked impact on treatment and guidelines for febrile neutropenia and mucositis. Let us not forget his amazing work at MD Anderson where he contributed greatly to these concepts, but especially to modernizing their outpatient emergency and chemotherapy administration services.  Ed's ideas were crucial in expanding and firmly establishing the Multinational Association for Supportive Care in Cancer (MASCC), which would not have succeeded without his drive and quiet guidance. And Ed had such a flair! This was not limited just to the golf course or to the elegant dining table. It was always a risk to hand Ed the wine list at a lovely restaurant. Even though we often split the cost of a bottle or two, I may still be paying for some of those treats! Let us all drink a toast to Ed, and reflect on his wonderful spirit.

I am sad to say that I only learned of Ed's passing today, March 26, 2021. Ed's interest in and dedication to the supportive care of patients with cancer is how we met many years ago. I've had the distinct pleasure as an oncology nurse to have been able to work and collaborate alongside some of the most influential physicians over the past several decades, and I am so pleased to have been among many others who also have walked in Ed's light, and enjoyed his friendship. He will be missed greatly, but remembered always. Heartfelt blessings to his family, and all who were lucky enough to have known his warmth, intelligence, humor and humanity.

I had the good fortune of making a fair number of business trips with Ed. In meetings he was engaged, insightful and professional. Afterwards, much the same with a large dose of humanity. Our last conversation was in December. After a perfunctory discussion of business matters, we turned to personal updates. Of course Ed's update included Nick, Jade and Lola. If it had been a Zoom call I would have seen his buttons popping, he was a very proud papa. My condolences to his family and friends.

Remarkable man and friend. Ed's creativity and energy was an inspiration and his unique ability to understand complex situations challenged us all to be better.

There are many words I can use to describe Ed- father, physician, co-worker, golfer, connoisseur and friend. In any of those roles he was always exhibited unbridled enthusiasm and caring. I loved hearing about the installation of his wine "cellar", some new golf club he recently acquired or being told about some esoteric wine I need to buy. Even though he lived in Houston a majority of his life, in his heart he was a Philly guy who would bring Amaroso rolls and a Primo's Soppressata hoagie on his return flight to Houston, which always made me laugh. 

I have been blessed to have so many memories of times with Ed. Both he and his family are in my prayers and I offer my sincerest condolences to his family.

With his kindness, professionalism and creativity Ed was a great person that I was honored to meet and work with since 2002. His contribution to Aloxi team was very important since the beginning.
I had the chance to share his joy and his family moments when invited for dinner at his house in Houston in 2008. Still have some videos to feel and live these moments.
We will miss you Ed and thank you for your kindness and generosity.

So saddened to hear of the passing of Ed. He had a joy for life and was a great professional. I have a fond memory of spending a wonderful evening at his house in Houston over great wine and steaks. You will be missed. My thoughts and prayers go out to Ed’s family.

Shocked and saddened, for it’s way too early in life for Ed to leave. So many amazing memories that have been shared, many of which share common themes:
Excellent wine
Prime cuisine at amazing restaurants and places around the globe
And
More excellent wine!

But it’s the stories of Ed’s caring for others that always sticks in my mind. How he cared for his family, his colleagues, and the patients he interacted with both personally and through the innovations we were all involved in.

My favorite memory is of the magic 8 ball he had on his desk in the office. When I asked him about it, he explained that in practice it was always on his desk at MDACC and when patients asked how long they had to live, Ed was always super positive, but when pressed he’d say ask the magic 8 ball. 

We never know how long we have - make each day count.

The memories of Ed are vivid and cherished ones. His kindness and compassion for others is recognized by all. His generosity as a host during visits to Houston bring a smile to my face. His passion for fine wine leave me remembering a special bottle of Dominus in Austin and a Diamond Creek Gravelly Road in Stockholm to cap off wonderful meals and conversation. His curiosity left a lasting impression on me and how I see others, seeking out those who were in a learning mode as he always was. When I heard the news today, my somber reflections turned to warm memories as I picked up an unusual paper weight (a shellacked bagel) that he gave to me our last day in the MGI Minneapolis office. He handed to me with a laugh and recounted the times I walked into his office and tossed it around as we discussed ways to make a difference for cancer patients. The momenta has and always will be in my office. Ed, I still owe you a KC BBQ lunch and you are missed my friend. May our prayers and thoughts comfort your family and friends.

So incredibly sad to hear of Ed's untimely passing. I was new to oncology when I came to MGI, and Ed was as good a teacher as one could hope for: knowledgeable, caring, funny. I think he was still one of our consultants when I started at MGI and joined as an employee shortly thereafter. He taught me so much and was such a good friend along the way. I recall dinner in Vegas and going to the Porsche store afterwards to get gifts for our kids; dinner at his house in Houston and meeting Jade and Lola; lunch at Mall of America with his family sometime after MGI had been purchased, and my son Ethan going on rides with Ed's kids -- I could go on and on, as many of you could. Ed was warm, genuine, sometimes infuriating with his strong opinions but one always knew Ed had the patient in mind when he spoke his mind. Praying for his family and friends and grateful that my path in life crossed Dr. Ed's.

Dr. Ed was such a compassionate individual and a truly unique person. When my sister was diagnosed with an incurable cancer he was incredibly helpful and led me in the right direction in dealing with the ultimate outcome of her demise. I am shocked and saddened by this news. I know that he made me a better person with his insight and passion about the cancer patient. May God rest his beautiful soul.

Ed was an amazing mentor and friend to be sure. Above all else he was a good person, with a huge heart.

When MGI bought my company and I joined the team, Ed took me under his wing and taught me oncology, late stage drug development, the importance of medical affairs, and the varied roles in a commercial organization. As fellow road warriors, we had the opportunity for many dinners together at the Sofitel in MN, laughing, drinking good (and bad) wine, getting to know each others dreams and fears. Nick was a similar age as my stepson, Jade and Lola were closer in age to my other 2 sons- so we had a lot of material for sharing stories of the laughter, joy and heartbreak that comes from being parents. He so loved his kids, and they were always in his thoughts. I was honored to host him at my home for dinner one night in Boston where he met my husband and boys. He took the time to play/teach chess with them and to share his love of the game. Ed cared so deeply about patients and through his stories radiated that passion, convincing my kids that in fact all that work time was ok if I was doing something important like helping patients. I loved him for that and for teaching me that the patients are waiting, they must always be the reason we do this hard work.  So many of us will miss him.

I'm saddened to learn of Ed's passing. What a joyful, compassionate and highly energetic friend. Yes, I too cant think of Ed without fondly recalling Bayesian statistics, though I never claim to have actually understood it in the least! As a clinician, he was there for me when my brother was diagnosed with stage IV melanoma with advice, insight, suggestions and connections. I know he's done that for countless others over the years in both a personal and professional capacity. I will miss him as a colleague, an incredibly intelligent medical and business professional, but even more so as a friend. I'm sorry distance and different paths didnt facilitate our staying in touch but memories are bringing a smile to my face. God bless him and his family.

My favorite memory of Ed was when a small group of us went to an an amazing Italian restaurant in NYC for dinner during a conference that Ed organized and included a rather challenging physician and his lovely wife. I learned so much from Ed that night both in terms of wine (the drinkable variety) and how to manage the whining of a certain physician that was present. My second favorite memory: every time I hear anything involving bayesian statistics, I ALWAYS think of Ed. His passion for trying to explain the complexities of that was as endearing as it was maddening (since it was so hard to understand). I also was beyond grateful for how helpful Ed was when my mother was diagnosed with a rare cancer-- within hours of him hearing the news, he had located, contacted, and put me in touch with a specialist at MDACC. My sincere condolences to his family... 

There is so much in my heart to express about Ed.  His passion, his commitment to science, his absolute adoration of his children (he was such a proud dad), his desire to advance medicine for patients. One of the things that sits in my mind so vividly is him sharing stories about being on the front lines of developing anti emetics so that patients could tolerate chemo better. I will never forget his generosity of time and knowledge when we were launching Aloxi.  He read every training module and edited so it would be ready for us to help educate our sales reps so patients could receive this important advancement in treatment.  Above all Ed exemplified love of family and friends.  He will forever live in my memory as one of the good guys. My deepest condolences to Nick, Jade and Lola.

I Had known Dr. Ed for over 30 years! A great passion for patients, for science, and for business.
An intellectual adversary at times, but always one to laugh with after, and agree to push forward for the benefit of our patients in need. Taught me what Bayesian stats stats were all about!! Always challenged me to learn.
