I always enjoyed my visits with Rick and Maryanne. Rick had a sense of humor. At one party I attended, Rick had invited some of his new neighbors. One of them was sitting on the arm of a couch as Rick walked by. She commented to Rick that he had a beautiful home and asked him what he did for a living. Rick replied that he was retired. The neighbor then asked what Rick did before he retired. Rick replied that he was an executive in a small oil company. The neighbor asked if she would know the oil company. Rick replied, "probably, it was Exxon-Mobile."

Rick loved his billiard room and an old crank phonograph in a closeted area of that room. On the wall next to this area is a mural of a mascaraed ball painted by Maryanne. I noticed that a curtain could be drawn across the mural and asked Rick why the curtain was needed. I learned that the mural depicted executives at Exxon offices in Huston and their personalities. If certain executives from Exxon visited Bar Harbor, the curtain would be drawn across the mural.

Rick and Maryanne are together again. May they rest in peace.

I knew Rick first when I worked for The Jackson Laboratory, where he was held in the highest regard as a good friend of and donor to the Lab. Then, I moved to the University of Maine, where he and Maryanne were both held in equally high esteem in all corners of Maine. Today's service for Rick was a wonderful tribute to him. I'm glad I could be there.
