A caring soul

July 6, 2021
I met Mr. Shakes a few times during my school years, the first time at TVET and the second at G.C Foster College. From what I remembered, he has a calm demeanor but is effective in his communication and resolution. He helped me with an administrative issue when I was in school, and with his caring nature, he followed up with me to make sure I was doing ok.

When I met him again years later at G.C Foster college, I was surprised that he remembered me. We had a good conversation; at this point, we discovered that I knew his daughter Nicosia, who I worked with at Liberty Hall, he was happy to hear about my progress, and we had a good laugh. He spoke extensively about his daughter Nicosia; I could listen to how proud he was of her, and rightfully so, she was just as impressive as her father.

Mr. Shakes, The Giant in Education

April 6, 2021
Mr. Shakes was my Principal/Director at the VTDI.  He was a stalwart, standing but a few feet in height.  His drive and presence were of great value to the growth and development of the VTDI.  I remembered his timid smiles, but genuine love for us all.

He held the wheel with balance, care and determination.  We celebrated, we grew, we laughed together as we become an institution among the best.

I mourned when Mr. Shakes left the VTDI, but today with a greater depth of grief.

To his family, God gave you a great man, please enjoy his memories and ensure that you live his legacy.  God has given you gladness for mourning.

Indelible mark in TVET

April 4, 2021

Mr. Shakes made an indelible mark in TVET education. He gave he an opportuniy that I made extrordinary use of...we move from proffessional to have a great and useful relationship with most frequent discussions on politics and the state  of TVET in Jamaica. Our last discussion of an interview I did with Quince Francis on a history of TVET. His contribution to Jamaica must be recorded.  It was at the VTDI I met him. I will certainly miss his counsel.

I did not know Mr. Shakes very well but in the few times I visited G.C. Foster College during his time as principal, I was made to feel welcome. He exuded a sense of calm which made one feel safe.  I know his daughter Nicosia, with whom I worked closely for two years, and the remainder of the family must be feeling his absence profoundly.  Be comforted with the assurance that he will live on in your hearts forever.  Blessings.
