Edward Wallace Hanlin
September 20,1937 – May 1, 2021
Edward Hanlin, 83, of Oakville Pa, died at his daughter’s
home on May 1, 2021. He loved all and
was loved by all, but none more than his wife, Solvig. They shared a beautiful love story that was
admired by their children, Monica Hanlin(Lloyd Thomas)of Newville, Denise
(Kelly) Jumper of Carlisle, and Brent (Kim) Hanlin of Carlisle. He also was the proudest Granddad to Travis Jumper, and Madeleine and Eva
Hanlin as well as loving uncle to many nieces and nephews including Edward ,
Kenny, Brian and Pete Hanlin. Tales of his adventures with his family were
legendary, and we all wish we could have had more.
Ed was known as the informal Mayor of Oakville PA, having been born and lived there for the
majority of his life. Ed and his wife,
Solvig were married in her hometown of Linkoping, Sweden in 1964 and lived
there, working for SAAB for two years and starting their family with their oldest
daughter, Monica. He enjoyed precious time with the Ryleanders, who welcomed him
into their family upon his marriage to Solvig. They returned to Oakville PA in
1966 and had their daughter Denise and son Brent. Ed worked for AMP for the
rest of his career. Upon retirement, he and Solvig traveled to Ireland and
Sweden, and spent much of the rest of their time helping and enjoying their
children and grandchildren. He and his
very patient wife moved to their beloved Stugan in 2015 which he built from
wood he reclaimed from an old store in Oakville.
Ed faithfully served his country as a marine for three years.
After starting a family he was very involved with the school district,
installing the playground at Jacksonville Elementary School, working to start
the soccer program at Big Spring, and installing a nature trail at Big Spring Middle
School. He helped coach his son’s and granddaughters’
soccer teams. He enjoyed endless fishing trips and hunting trips with his son, nephews and
grandchildren. He was always up for a game of tennis or 500, a bike ride or a
gallop on his special horse, Dakota. He was active in the PTO and the Cumberland
County Democratic Party, believing that change only occurs if you put your heart
and effort into it.
Ed Hanlin was preceded in death by his parents Sarah and Frank
Hanlin, as well as his five brothers and sisters Paul (Doc) Hanlin, Patricia
Lightfoot, Bobbie McBeth, Carol Shaeffer, and Pete Hanlin. Please visit the memorial website and submit
