I was working with Ed at an English conversation school in Taipei in 1974. One of the guys who lived in Ed's four-bedroom apartment was leaving and Ed asked if I wanted to move in. I jumped at the chance because I'd just spent a winter in a terrible living accomodation with no hot water and no heater. Ed was very easy-going and fun to be with, and having lived in Taipei much longer than me, was a great source for tips about the city and life in Taiwan.
Years later (1978 or 79), I visited Ed a couple of times in California after he moved to Berkeley and I had returned to Vancouver, B.C.
In 1982, I relocated to Tokyo (where I still reside), and I called him a couple of times and we talked. But distance can be cruel. As time went on, my wife and I had children and we were absorbed in family, work and life in Japan.
Very sad to hear he's gone. My condolences to his family. I've remembered Ed many times through the years, and one thing always comes to mind. He was one of the good guys! Rest in peace, my friend.
