I met Eileen Maidment in1956 while she was living at Shotley Park Dr Barnardo’s home in Shotley Bridge, co.Durham. I was 2years older than her.
Living in Newcastle, I became friends with three ex Shotley Park Dr Barbados boys being fostered locally. We frequently cycled the 14 miles to Shotley Park and, with permission from Skip Wilson supervisor of the home, pitched our tent in the grounds and occasionally at the adjacent Snows Green Farm where my friends used to help-out while living at the home.
It was during this time that I grew fond of Eileen who I found to be a truly nice person; she became my very first girlfriend who has created a lifelong impression on me. Before cycling home on a Sunday I used to gift Eileen her favourite Cadburys Chocolate Box Assortment that she shared with her best friend, Lilian Broughton.
One weekend, Eileen told me that she was to leave in a few days to live “near her Mother”. I gave her my address and we agreed that I would cycle to Shotley Park on the day she was leaving but, unfortunately, I got a puncture en route and lost time while repairing it. On arrival at Shotley Park, Eileen had already left and her friend Lilian said that she was in tears that we had failed to meet up. I later received a letter from Eileen at her new address at St Nicolas, Nations Hill, Kings Worthy, near Winchester.
In1968, I got a job at Vosper Thornycroft working in Woolston, Southampton and Portchester, Portsmouth. I visited St Nicolas and was advised to visit Winchester Child Welfare department for information on Eileen’s whereabouts but that was unsuccessful.
For almost 40 Years I lived in Petersfield and later in Chichester but, owing to personal circumstances, I moved back up North where I now live.
On several occasions over the years, Eileen has been on my mind and I researched her life through online Family History sites and, sadly, discovered that she had died quite young.
Best wishes to her family and friends.
Thinking of you Eileen!
