His Life

He was born February 17, 1940 in Perote, AL to the late Amos and Geneva Akings. He was the third of nine children and was also preceded in death by one of his siblings.

“Chuck’s” formative years were spent in Perote, where he was a member of the Mt. Hillard Baptist Church and attended Perote School. After moving to Alaska, he joined the New Hope Baptist Church and was a member of the choir. He later became a member of the Anchorage Community Seventh-Day Adventist Church and was the church’s Photographer, the Assistant Head of the Decorating Committee, a Deacon and an Elder; he was on the Church’s Board where he served faithfully until his health problems began.

“Chuck” attended the Alaska Business College and the University of Alaska, Anchorage. He was an accomplished pianist and also studied guitar. He retired from the Department of Defense, Ft. Richardson, Alaska as Housing Furnishing Manager.

He was married to Willo Akings in Anchorage, Alaska for 41 years. “Chuck” is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Willo; four brothers, Joseph (Verna), Union Springs, AL, Early (Shirley), West Grove, PA, Willie Clarence (Mae) and Amos Akings, all of Banks, AL; three sisters, Clara Rodgers, Banks, AL, Alice (Robert) Powell, Philadelphia, PA and Olivia Barrett, Mt. Laurel, NJ; one uncle, Willie Dean (Hattie Mae) Warren, Cleveland,OH; two brothers-in-law, Charles (Mamie) Barker, Romulus, MI and Irvin Barker, Clayton, AL; two sisters-in-law, Ann Cross, Romulus, MI and Mary Akings, LaGrange, GA; as well as a host of devoted nephews, nieces, cousins and friends.

The staff of Carter Funeral Home is honored to serve the family of the late Mr. Elba Lee "Chuck" Akings and join the family in an extreme expression of gratitude for the care and support extended to them during the illness and demise of their precious loved one.
