I met Ellie in 1991 when I went to work at St. Mary's Center. We worked together to do fundraising and many other projects over the years. I was the preschool director and she became the executive director of the center. She was always so supportive of her staff as we struggled to provide services with very limited budgets. We remained friends after she left St. Mary's and I will miss her so much. She was a very interesting person--brilliant, driven by an intense social conscience, and very kind, patiently supporting me through various crises. I was always so impressed by the way her children cared for Ellie, providing homes for her on both coasts. Her spirit lives on in them.

Ellie was a generous, kind soul and my god-mother in seminary. She taught me so much about life and cared for my well being. I loved her Boston accent and she introduced me to the Red Sox and got a group of us to go to a game when they played in Oakland, CA. We sat in the cheap seats as we were all seminarians on limited budgets.  But Ellie chauffeured us in her little blue Subaru everywhere. I have so many good memories of seminary and Ellie is part of many of them. God bless her memory.

I met Ellie shortly after I moved to Westfield in 1966. Her youngest daughter and my son were baptized at the same time. In the late sixties and early seventies, we taught junior high students at church, organized several candidate nights, and advocated for social justice causes at church and in the community.
I was so happy to find another woman interested in current affairs and committed to making changes. She was an intellectual breath of fresh air for me when I was making the adjustment of working to being a stay at home mom.
We had many interesting conversations over the years about the state of our nation and world. I'll always remember her hosting an election night get together for friends on the night Richard Nixon was elected President.
Later on as we both returned to work, I was a social worker for the Department of Child Welfare at the same time she was a lawyer for the department. Sometimes we were involved in the same cases.
Once she moved to California, I did not see her as much, but we kept in contact with Christmas cards and visits when she returned to Massachusetts. In a way, it was good that my last time to be with her was at her 80th birthday party. It was a wonderful day to be there with her and her family.
She was truly an amazing woman who was not afraid to accept challenges - law school. divinity school, a move across the country from her home of many years, and willingness to reach out to others in her employment and personal life.  Thank you, Ellie, for letting me a part of your life.

"Listen more often to things, than to beings
Listen more often to things, than to beings
Tis the ancestors' breath when the fire's voice is heard,
Tis the ancestors' breath in the voice of the water"
Sweet Honey in the Rock- 1980
Mom introduced me to this song in the 80's as one of her favorite songs by Sweet Honey - very powerful words & important message

Obituary

January 28, 2019

Eleanor Marie Shepardson passed away on January 15th, 2019 after a courageous battle with pulmonary fibrosis. Eleanor (Ellie) was born on January 3rd, 1937 to George and Sophie Placzek in Westfield Massachusetts. She was a graduate of Westfield High School. Eleanor went on to attend the University of Massachusetts where she earned a Bachelors of Arts degree as well as a Master of Arts degree in history. She studied Law at Western New England College where she received her Juries Doctor degree. Ellie passed the Bar exam in both Massachusetts and Maine where she practiced law for over 10 years. After receiving the calling, Ellie attended the Pacific School of Religion in Berkeley, CA and received a Masters of Divinity, and became an ordained Minister of the United Church of Christ. The ordainment ceremony was performed at the First Congregational Church in  Westfield, Massachusetts.

Ellie then became the Director at the Saint Mary's Center in Oakland California where she assisted Homeless seniors. As both an Attorney and Minister, she dedicated her life to serving people who were less fortunate. She did this with exceptional empathy and compassion; often not accepting payment for services to others.

Ellie spent time on both coasts. She drove across the country several times camping along the way and also flew across country multiple times spending several months at a time on each coast. She was very involved in politics, Women's rights and was a warrior against injustice. She attended the First Women’s Conference in Texas in 1975 and the National Women's March in both 2017 & 2018. She was a huge fan of the Rachel Maddow show. Those who were close to her knew better than to try and disturb her when Rachel was on.

Ellie was an avid reader and would often read four or five books all at the same time. She loved gardening and would often say how working in the Earth made her feel more connected to the planet. She loved to help things grow and gardening helped keep her centered and grounded. Her love of the great outdoors included camping in Vermont and among the magnificent redwoods in northern California. Ellie loved to cook and was always willing to try new recipes; especially on her children. She loved baseball and was an avid fan of the Boston Red Sox. At the age of six, she knew every player and their statistics on the entire Red Sox roster! She was thrilled to have seen the Red Sox win four World Series in the last fifteen years.

Her favorite time of year was Christmas. Ellie loved everything about this holiday. She loved to cook for her family and sing Christmas carols. Ellie would often start playing Christmas music in August. If you were fortunate to be around her during the Christmas season, you couldn't help to feel her positive energy, love and joy.

Ellie is pre-deceased by her brother George and his wife Jackie from Enfield, Ct. She is survived by her brother Vincent and his wife Kathy; her brother Steve and his wife Lori all from Westfield, Massachusetts. She also leaves four children: her son Steve and his partner Eileen from West Springfield, Massachusetts; her daughters Lisa and her husband Jay from Southampton, Massachusetts; Ann and her husband Michael from Oakland, California; and her son Peter from South Hadley, Massachusetts. She had five grandchildren: Stephanie, Heather, Zachary, Sarah and Melissa as well as many nephews & nieces.

Ellie was a very kind, passionate, generous soul who will be greatly missed. In lieu of flowers we ask that you consider making donations to:

Over the last 10 years I have had the pleasure of having aunt ellie in my life. I was a new comer to this family and she excepted me with open arms and lots of love. Six years ago I married Jen and aunt ellie did us the honor of marrying us. She took the time and traveled here from California to be there on my wedding day. I will always love her for her kind words and loving touch. I will miss you and you will always have a special place in my heart
