Tribute to Elechi Amadi

What does one write as a tribute to this quintessential giant that has not already been written or said?
Dr Elechi Amadi the scientist; Elechi the Engineer; Elechi the Professor, Elechi the Soldier; Elechi the Statesman; Elechi the Community Developer, Elechi the lover of Spiritual Beings living Human Experiences; Elechi the Family Man; Elechi the author or Elechi the Educator?
I have chosen to write about Elechi the Educator. For me it was a very personal experience that neither my friend, who created the moment, nor anyone else knew what I learned.
Visiting Nigeria from Canada and going to see my friend, Priye Iyalla-Amadi after an ECKANKAR African Seminar in Port Harcourt, I was not prepared for the education I was about to receive.
Sitting in their living room, sipping cool orange juice and being asked, “would you like to meet my husband?”… “Yes, of course, was my automatic response.”
My education in Humility began the moment Professor Elechi Amadi entered. Standing and approaching me was the renowned Elechi Amadi, scientist, engineer, professor, solder, statesman, community builder, lover of creation, the family man, the author, the educator and more. Yet he was down to earth with an infectious smile, dressed in his traditional Aluu home garb holding his mkpara (Staff).
There, in his home at Aluu, Port Harcourt, standing tall was a Spiritual Royalty emanating the most humane and humble vibrations, welcoming, smiling, and teaching me at a very sublime level what it means to be a great human being. It is a lesson that lives with me today.
Thank You, Elechi Amadi the Quintessential Gentle Giant. Your Legacy lives on beyond the physical universe as you sojourn for God at a higher realm.
Bridget U Ubochi.

Echoes of him!
Yes, of him
His works and him
His smiles, depict him.
His open arms,
A pair of arms
That assembles
God's universes.

Echoes of Him!
His heart of love
"The Concubine's"
portion of love
His acts of love
Depict the God in him,
And the love of him.

Echoes of him,
Of love, that bonds.
His love bonds,
From "The Great Pond".
To "The Great Pond",
Many years later,
He was taken.

Echoes of it, of him!
The pain in him.
Many sobbed
Many hoped
For the miraculous rescue.
Alas!
"Isiburu" came to play,
And on that day,
The haunters,
the fearful haunted,
With tearful eyes.
The haunted,
The haunter
With smiley eyes.
"The Slave", he wasn't.
Dance in our camp
Tears in their camp.

Echoes of him!
His generosity,
Of great intensity.
And brings
The "Woman of Calabar"
Through Kalabari
Passing through Nkwere
Down to Ikwere.

Echoes of him!
His echoes, turned "Estrangement" to steaming fresh love.

Echoes of him,
All around us.
Though majority was unborn
When the "Sunset In Biafra",
Echoes of him
From our minds' eyes,
Made us see
Made us feel
Made us heal
Made us real
And be.
We're free!
Free we're!

Echoes of him!
Aluu, World's Assembly Hall!

Echoes of him!
Undying echoes!

Late Capt Dr Elechi Amadi was a renowned novelist, playwright, and a grandfather that my beautiful daughter Nmesoma sadly did not get to meet.
He was a great academic administrator whose works laid a firm foundation for African literature today and times to come.
His books richly present African culture with a captivating sense of humor that makes reading a fascinating experience.
I am glad to be his son-in-law.

Elechi Amadi my dear literary father and a literary icon without guile. The quintessential scholar of all times. You left indelible footprints on the walls of the earth for generations to explore and enjoy. I still appreciate once again for the aesthetic forward you wrote in my first publication. I and the world will forever miss your physical mentorship, simplicity, sense of humour, writing style, literary presentation, wrestling - the Ikwerre literature and many more. Live on my hero!

Elechi Amadi was a literary icon and critic who made a great impact on the society as evidenced by his expert novelist craft. The way he structures his plot, in his writing style, in the subtlety of his conversation and excellent characterization, particularly with regard to the African female character.
Elechi Amadi was a man of honour. During one of the Secondary students' literary contests organised at the University of Port-Harcourt, I had the honour to meet with him. I cherish his autograph forever.
