Elizabeth H . Elder Bean, nicknamed “Moot” and also called the “Cake Lady”, was born June 17, 1935 in Bullock County, Alabama to the late Brady Hollinghead and Fennie Surles Hollinghead Frazier. She was the first born and had eight siblings. Elizabeth departed this life Saturday, April 25, at the Baptist South Medical Center in Montgomery, Alabama.

Mrs. Bean joined the church at a very early age and she served in many different capacities including, but not limited to, serving as choir director and church secretary. She was a seamstress, but was perhaps best known as a soloist and her name appeared on many, many local church programs. Church affiliations include Oak Grove Baptist Church in the Shopton Community, Mount Carmel Baptist Church in the Simsville Community, and Jones Chapel AME Church in Omega, Alabama where she served faithfully ·until her health began to fail.

In 1952, Elizabeth was married to Clemon Elder who preceded her in death. To that union three children were born, Lessie, a.k.a. Pelatyah, Clinton and Felester. (Mrs. Bean’s second child, Clinton, died at the age of three).

In 1966, she married Walter Bean and gained five additional children - Walter Jr., Gloria Marie, Gerthie, Bernard and Robert.

Mrs. Bean’s occupational life began with her first job as a maid and ended when she retired after serving as a Department Supervisor for 28 years at Welch Company of the South due to the plant’s closing.

In addition to the above named individuals, she was also preceded in death by her second husband, Walter; her eight siblings: Douglas Surles, James, Thomas, Estella, Willie Louis, Arthur Lee, Roosevelt Frazier (and one infant sister) plus three step children, Walter Jr., Gerthie and Bernard.

Elizabeth was a very lovable human being and she made people happy with her cooking. She had a special love for children and provided child care services to many of the local youth who are now entering into young adulthood. There are also many adults who call her Mom, Ma Bean, or Mama Liz. She even unofficially adopted a son, Bobby McGill, and the entire Ricks family. Her life was filled with many who adored her as she loved people and they loved her too.

While she had many friends, a few of the longtime trusted and faithful deserve special mention: They are, Willie B. “Mollie” Brundidge, Mary Fitzpatrick, Billy and Joanne Blue, Mattie Ousley, Willie Frank Thomas, Eugene and Eddie Mae Cowan, Veronica Baker and Mother Effie Kindred.

Those left to cherish her memory include four children: Gloria Marie (James) Surles, Union, New Jersey; Robert Earl (Theresa) Bean, Marion, Ohio; Pelatyah “Lessie” Hawkins, Columbus, Georgia; and Felester (Ethel) Elder, Auburndale, Florida. Mrs. Bean also leaves a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and many others who called her a friend.
