A CELEBRATION OF LIFE

Elizabeth Riley-Lewis was born January 30, 1930 to the parents of Ghent Riley, Sr. and Lizzie Stith Riley in Clarksdale, Mississippi, Coahoma County.  Elizabeth was the granddaughter of John Riley and Indiana Cason Riley and John Stith and Laura Chapman Benson Stith.  She was the great granddaughter of Louis Chapman.  Elizabeth was the great-granddaughter of Lucy Stith and the great granddaughter of Mary Daniels and the great-great granddaughter of Caroline Daniels.  Elizabeth was preceded in death by both parents, twelve brothers and sisters—John, Kenneth (K.T.), Gipson, Eddie, Ghent, Jr., S. T., Odeal, Joanna, Laura, Nettie, Melissa, and Maybelle.  Elizabeth, affectionately known as “Doll”, was the thirteenth and youngest child of Ghent Riley, Sr., and Lizzie Stith Riley.

Aunt “Doll” grew up in the Mississippi Delta in the town of Friars Point.  Aunt Doll was soft spoken and she always had a beautiful smile.  She grew up in a Christian home and she attended Mt. Ary Missionary Baptist Church, Clarksdale, MS and New Prospect Missionary Baptist Church, Friars Point, MS.  She was a Christian and accepted Christ at an early age in Mississippi. As a young adult, Aunt Doll married Harry Lewis and moved to Chicago, IL.

Aunt “Doll’s steps were ordered by God.  Aunt Doll was an Angel sent by God with an earthly mission; She had a meaningful and purposeful life.  Aunt Doll’s mission was to be a mother to many children.  Aunt Doll was a woman of faith, courage and love.  In 1961, Aunt Doll’s sister Nettie died at an early age from leukemia.  Nettie had seven children, three boys and four girls.  Aunt Doll became the mother of her sister Nettie’s daughters, rearing and caring for her nieces in Chicago.  Aunt Doll stood tall; she was courageous, strong, kind, and loving.    She was admired and respected by family and friends; she showed her love in every way possible.  Aunt Doll left her family a remarkable heritage and legacy.  She was blessed by God to become the mother, grandmother, great grandmother to many children.   Elizabeth is a Biblical name.  Her name was becoming to her character and the role that God gave to her in life.  Elizabeth “Doll” Riley Lewis was blessed and highly favored by God.  Aunt Doll was an outstanding woman and we call her BLESSED.  “Give her of the fruit of her hands and let her own works praise her in the gates”.  Proverbs 31:31

Aunt Doll departed this life on Friday, April 10, 2020.  She leaves to cherish her memory he nieces who became her daughters:  Shirley Hutcherson (California); Katherine Sparks (Chicago); Joyce Davis (Theodore) (Broadview); and Annette Hasell (Wayne) (Indianapolis); 11 grandchildren,  29 great grandchildren; 13 great great grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.

I want to express my deepest condolences to the family. I have known Doll every since I was a young girl about 8 years old. We lived in the Cabrini Green Housing where my family became acquainted with Doll and her nieces, Joyce, Pepper, Annette and Shirley. She was always so kind and had a smile on her face. She always welcome me into her house. My fond memories of Doll was when she would send me to the store with a dollar and fifty cent to buy her a pack of cigarettes and her favorite RC pop. The fifty was for me to buy what ever I wanted. Fifty cent went a long ways back then, I thought I had a lot of money in my pocket (smile).

Another fond memory was the weather was so hot, about 90 degrees. I saw the young men take off their shirt and show their chest to stay cool. I was hot too so I took off my top. I was standing on the porch without a top on and Doll asked me where was my top. I told her I took it off because I was hot and I want to stay cool like everyone else. She told me you are a young girl. girls are not suppose to show their chest like the boys. She made me to put my top back on. It's funny to me now when I think about it. She was not only a mother figure to her nieces, but to me as well. She was truly loved and will be dearly missed. Rest In Heaven Doll.

Joanna and Doll were the last of the Riley siblings. There was an eighteen year difference in their ages. Joanna is the knee baby in the family photo. Whenever Aunt Doll visited St. Louis, it was so magical to see the sisters reminiscing about the good old days and just catching up on life in general.

It was pure joy to witness their happiness and laughter. I count it a blessing to witness those two sisters together. Just to be in their presence transported you to an indescribable time and place.

The last time I saw Aunt Doll was at mom's (Joanna) funeral in 2012. My numerous phone calls thereafter were heartwarming, enriching
and provided much needed nourishment for my soul. I'll surely miss those conversations and the excitement to plan the next family reunuion.

We spoke often about the loved ones no longer with us. It was heartbreaking not to be able to tell her my sister Phyllis died on March 27th. I am still praying for all who grieve loss.

Aunt Doll is well loved and her legacy we'll never forget. Our challenge remains to love one another whether near or far. We must comfort each other as the social distance ordinances continue. I love you and send a virtual hug until we can gather again. Shirley Jackson -St. Louis

Prayer:  Our Father, help us to depend on You in every area of our life. Free our mind from clutter and chaos; our heart from grief, hurt, pain, anger, resentment, and unforgiveness. Please free us of
all burdens, doubts, fears, and worries. Renew our spirit by increasing hope and confidence in what You will do for and through us.

Lord, help us to always love the right way.....without boundaries or conditions. Father, daily help us to remember to thank and acknowledge how You work things out in Your Perfect Timing. Continue to cover us with a peace beyond our understanding. Grant us victory in every circumstance or situation. It is in the most precious name of Jesus we pray. Amen.

#Watch Him do it.
