Elizabeth Phillips Hicks Lawrence, 88, a longtime resident of Granville County, died peacefully on April 30, 2016 in Oxford, N.C. Mrs. Lawrence was a thoughtful, generous, loving and sweet lady to all who knew her. She was born on May 7, 1927 to the late Riley Phillips and Annie Blackwell Phillips. She worked for many years at Murdoch Center in Butner and later owned Je’Nita’s, a women’s clothing store in Creedmoor. Mrs. Lawrence loved being with her family and friends. She was devoted to her church. She enjoyed reading, tending to her flower garden and caring for her pets.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, William Edward Hicks. They were married for 29 years until Edward lost his battle with cancer in 1974. She is also preceded in death by her second husband, William (Bill) Thomas Lawrence, her stepson, William Thomas Lawrence Jr., her sisters, Hazel Hefner and Mary Helen Elliott.

Mrs. Lawrence is survived by her son, William Edward Hicks Jr., and wife Kay of Manteo, NC; her daughter, Diane Hicks White and husband Ted of Murrells Inlet, S.C.; her son, Phillip Paul Hicks and wife Carol of Pittsboro, NC; her step-daughter, Catherine L. Lawrence and husband Alan of Apex, NC; her stepdaughter, Elizabeth L. Jones and husband Robert of Raleigh, NC; her grandchildren, Phillip, Will, Jessica, Patrick, Bart, William, John, and her sisters–in-law Edna Yates, Dot Love, Rosa Overton, her brother-in-law James Elliott and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 1:00 PM Saturday, May 7, 2016 at Living Word Baptist Church located at 1155 Green Road, Creedmoor, NC.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Alzheimer’s Association Eastern North Carolina Chapter, 3739 National Drive, Suite 110, Raleigh, NC 27612.

Visitation will be held from 12:30-1:00PM Saturday, May 7, 2016 prior to the service at Living Word Baptist Church.
