ForeverMissed

While being treated in a hospital nearby her home on Long Island, New York, Elizabeth Seubert passed away on Sunday, June 12, 2022.  Elizabeth lived a fascinating life filled with travel, culture, family and domestic comfort.  Born in Bombay, India to British parents George and Jane Brown, she and her brother Richard spent time in English boarding schools throughout their childhood.  Later while pursuing her collegiate studies in France, Elizabeth met and married American Bernard Seubert.  They lived briefly in France where they had their first child Aleanor. A few years later their second child Laurens James was born in England.  They would eventually settle in the United States, first in Flushing, Queens with Bernard’s family and then finally in Bellport, New York where they raised their two children.

Elizabeth was academically accomplished in French Studies having studied at a university in Paris.  Once settling in the states, she would eventually make her career at Brookhaven National Laboratory as an administrative assistant and a Media and Communications Liaison.  For several years she was responsible for the publication of the BNL Newsletter and printed communications of the media office.  Until her passing, she was an active member of the Brookhaven Retired Employees’ Association.

Elizabeth was well known for her beautiful artwork and drawings, her association with the local garden club, art associations and French club.  It was common to receive a hand-painted card from her or even a quick doodle on a note.  She was an avid reader and book collector.  She was generous with her time and money and would help in any way she could, often driving friends on errands.  She was a wonderful hostess and her home was always open to visitors from near and far.  She is survived by numerous friends and colleagues who remember her selfless spirit, her humor and her kindness.

Elizabeth was predeceased by her husband Bernard and her brother Richard.  She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law Ali and Hayden, her son and daughter-in-law Jaimie and Robin, her niece Elizabeth and her husband Noam, her brother-in-law Donald and her grandchildren Ren, Ryan, Sentayehu and Desta.  While her absence will be forever missed, her family takes comfort in knowing she is now at peace.

How I wish I could tell Liz that my book is being published by Sunstone Press. She was my most helpful reader. I have so much respect for her opinion when it comes to literature that her encouragement kept me going. Thanks Liz

It was a privilege to work with Liz for so many years. She helped me weekly to disseminate information through the Bulletin for BERA and Conference Services. She did an amazing job with the annual BNL Art show, too. She will be missed!

During my 12 years on Long Island, Liz became one of my closest friends. She was always available for everything from a ride to work to a shoulder to cry on. She was upbeat, encouraging, and gave excellent advice (but only when asked.) Our offices were next to each other for many years and I enjoyed hearing her advice and observations for others as well. I also was witness to her fierce shepherding of the Bulletin to publication over the years. She was sometimes overruled, but she never backed down. When my brother died, she called me nearly every day for a few weeks, just to see if I needed to talk and make sure I was managing my grief. On happier occasions, she made clever birthday cards with drawings and poems that I cherish to this day. After I moved back to New Mexico, Liz would check in on me from time to time and share the news from New York. During the Covid lockdown, I wrote a novel which she recently offered to read and give me her thoughts. To my astonishment, she stayed up all night reading as soon as she received it and gave me excellent suggestions, along with an enormous dose of support and encouragement. Liz was an extraordinary woman whose friendship sustained me in difficult times and was delightful at all times. I will never forget her.

We first met Liz in the 1990s. when she was overseeing the BNL Newsletter and we were both occasionally invited to give talks and art shows at the lab. Liz soon joined our small group for French speakers that was meeting at Wading River Library, and later at our home. She continued to be one of the most valued and welcome members of that group for more than twenty years, even after it moved to Stony Brook. She was almost always there, eager to participate, and welcomed by everyone for her positive, cheerful, and intelligent contributions to our meetings. Although often troubled by poor health Liz never complained and carried on with her activities in a very ‘British’ way. She was a highly-valued friend with a rare generosity of spirit, always willing to think the best of people, and everyone will miss her.

Liz was such an important part of my early years as a writer at Brookhaven National Laboratory. She helped to guide me and cheer me on in so many ways. She was a delight to interact with on a daily basis. She always had the obscure answers to the NYT crossword puzzle clues no one else understood. She gave me insight into art and music, marriage and motherhood, and an appreciation for all the very human qualities that make a team of coworkers so much more than that – indeed much closer to a family. Over the more recent years, it was always fun to find her comments on my Facebook photos, often many months after I’d posted them. I’d picture her looking through batches at a time to catch up on what was happening in our lives, and on the stories I’d been writing for the Lab. And of course I always thanked her for her super kind and insightful comments – and pointed her to the right person when she inadvertently credited me with a story I did not write! She treasured her connection to Brookhaven, and particularly her friendships with people in all sorts of jobs across the Laboratory. I hope she knew how much her contributions meant through countless stories, cartoons, and inspiring mentorship to the rest of us!

Sending love and prayers to all her family and friends. My sincere condolences.

I worked with Liz for many years when she was editor of The Bulletin. She was the best editor, but also a wonderful friend. She was creative, funny, sensitive and caring. Liz had artistic talent as well as excellent writing skills. I still have some of the original cards she gave me for my birthday. Even during the most trying times, Liz could make me laugh, and she was always positive and encouraging. I was privileged to know her and will deeply miss her.

For Liz and her children

September 12, 2022

  • So lively persit the souvenirs of the Parisian epoch of Liz, Bernard, Charles and Doddy ; the pilgrimages to Notre Dame de Chartres in the steps of Charles Péguy.
  • The wedding of Liz and Bernard in the family house, the ‘Sun Trap’  at Storington, where I was dubbed best man ;
  • From Queens NY, the exploration and discovery by car of the beauty of Long Island, which was to become the retreat of the family ;
  • My numerous stays in Bellport welcoming home during my fellowships first at Harvard in the seventies, then at BU in the nineties. Evelyne and Liz were offering their best to make of these, havens of peace and regeneration.
  • The visits of Liz and Bernard to Courcelles, Chevreuse, and even Couffinal en Lauragais when Ali and James were still babies.

We will meet again one day.
I cannot believe that all these ‘lot of loves’
With their fancy touch of art’s grace are for ever gone.
They were for us on Earth the icon of the Divine.

We always looked forward to reading Liz's stories in the Brookhaven Bulletin. Her writing was lively, her wit sublime, sharp, but never mean-spirited. She could joke in English and French. Her spontaneous puns had us all in stitches at French Club and other social gatherings. Wish we'd written them down! That twinkle in her eye in all these wonderful photos conveys her beautiful spirit. She was always fun, no matter what the circumstances, and brave in adversity. Our condolences to her family, to whom she was devoted. Liz will be missed by many.
