Ellen “Big Granny” was born on Thursday December 12, 1946 in Laurens County, South Carolina. She was the daughter of the late Major Henry F. Finney and late Mary Hunt Finney.
“Big Granny” was the life of the party. She never met a stranger. She had many of adopted daughters, sons as well as grandchildren and great grandchildren. She will definitely be missed by many. She truly was a care-giver her entire life.
Ellen was a Registered Nurse for forty-two plus years. She gave care to many patients over many years most of the time neglecting her own care. She enjoyed more than anything fishing, crafting, sewing, and going to the casino when she was able. The one thing she loved more than life itself was taking care of her three great grandsons. Those were the life for her. She spent the last years of her life caring for them and shared many great times with them. They absolutely loved their granny.
Ellen is survived by her daughter, Bobbie Dodd Johnson of Pleasant Grove, AL, Daughter Kim Curtis Dodd of Ashland, Ohio, Granddaughter Ashley Nicole McCaig (Denver McCaig) of Houston, Texas, three great grandsons Soren Denver McCaig, Nicolas Archer McCaig, and Michael Ryder McCaig also of Houston, Texas. She is also survived by one sister Virginia Smith of Smithfield, Virginia, Mott(Doug) Mayer, Kelly Mahon, Nate Mayer ,cousins, Laurens, South Carolina. Longtime friend Nora Bates Curtin, Selma, Alabama.
She was preceded in death her parents Henry F. and Mary Finney of Newport News, Va. Her son, Jesse F. Finney of Loudonville Ohio.
Professional Services were entrusted to W.E. Lusain Funeral Home and Crematory of Birmingham, Al.

I had the greatest honor and pleasure of working with this amazing lady in Arizona. She was the most fantastic friend and mentor for this young ICU nurse on night shift. She was like a mom and teacher all wrapped up in a package with a contagious laugh. I have told her in the past that there were so many things I learned at her side. She basically taught me so how to 'BE' an ICU nurse. Love you Big-ma. You are in much better place than us!

Just found out the shocking news that the lord called you up to join him. I think I can honestly say that you may have been the longest friend I have ever had since I've known you from the time I was a small child. Say hello to mom for me and all the other friends and family I know you are happy to see again. Until we meet again my dear friend.
