ESI obituary - Old Lyme

February 7, 2013

ELMIRA STUART INGERSOLL,

the daughter of Charles T. Stuart and Lilliebelle Mortimore Stuart, was born on April 13th, 1910 in Louisville, KY. and died peacefully on February 6, 2013 at her home in Lyme, CT. at the age of 102.

Elmira married John C. Ingersoll of Huntington, L.I., N.Y. in October 1930. For more than fifty years she lived in Huntington where she and her husband raised a family, volunteered in their church and children's schools and were active in many community organizations.

Surviving are her son, Stuart Ingersoll of Essex, CT., and daughters, Ann Boyden of Vinalhaven, ME. , Julia Hikory of East Lyme, CT., and Marija Kncev of North Andover. MA. Also surviving are 14 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren and a large, extended family. Elmira was predeceased by her husband, John C. Ingersoll, and son, John C. Ingersoll Jr.

As a widow she moved to Lyme, CT. in 1986 with Mary Muhlhausen, her friend of many years. Together they opened their home to their families and friends, old and new, who shared their interests in peace work, environmental concerns, the healing arts, Tai Chi, world religions, spirituality and the challenging process of aging with grace.

The “Ladies of the Lake” enjoyed a wonderful “notoriety” thanks to their energy, enthusiasm, curiosity, humor, compassion, and welcoming spirit. Elmira and Mary often said that Harmony House evolved because of those who came there and they were forever grateful for this last period of their lives.
