Elois L. Brown O’Neal, daughter of the late James B. Brown and Elvira Storrs Brown, was born October 29, 1940 in Richmond, VA. She was the fifth of six children born to the couple and the youngest daughter. She was educated in the public school system, graduating from Armstrong High School in 1957 at the tender age of 16. From there she attended Virginia Union University where she graduated cum laude in 1961 with a B.S in Biology. She was in fact very intelligent and recognized early on the value of a good education. Elois held a variety of positions over her lifetime, including Chemist (1963-1968) in Philadelphia; Director of Quality Control in Pharmaceutical Manufacturing (1972-1988) in St. Croix, USVI; Secondary Science Teacher (1970-1972 & 1988-1996) in St. Croix, USVI; Travel Consultant (1997-2001) Northern VA; Jewelry Consultant- Diamond Specialist for JC Penney (1999-2009) No.VA & Novi, MI. She made lifelong friends wherever she went and was truly loved and admired for her dedication, work ethic, sense of humor, and generosity. By far, her most important job was one as single parent. Married and divorced twice, she did not let any obstacles interfere with her commitment to her children, especially their education. There was nothing she would not do to provide the best opportunities for her two daughters, at times in spite of intense personal sacrifice. Yet, she still found time to pursue other hobbies and interests. Elois loved to sew and was quite the talented seamstress, making most her own wardrobe and much of her young daughters’ clothes as well. She also enjoyed gardening, playing cards, Scrabble, and doing crossword puzzles. Her biggest passion by far was her love of travel and exploration. At the time of her death, she had travelled to over 100 countries and every continent except Antarctica. She instilled an appreciation of travel and world cultures in her daughters as well, taking them on many of her journeys at a young age. Some of the countries she visited include Mexico, Canada, Australia, Chile, Peru, Brazil, Fiji, Portugal, Italy, Estonia, Canary Islands, Morocco, Switzerland, Ivory Coast, Thailand, Argentina, South Africa, Nepal, Senegal, China, New Zealand, Russia, Norway, Turkey, Greece, India, Liberia; throughout most of the Caribbean, and almost all 50 states. Elois was a strong, independent woman who fought for life until the very end. She succumbed to cancer on July 16, 2009 at the side of her eldest daughter after a 14 month battle. She leaves to cherish her memory: daughters Pamela Booth Littles of Canton, MI and Jennifer Booth Hardy of Las Vegas, NV; sisters Doris Le Mon of Pittsburgh, PA and Barbara Cannon of Richmond, VA; brothers James Brown of Baltimore, MD and Alvin Brown, Sr of Richmond, VA; her granddaughters Erin Robinson and Summer Littles; grandsons Joshua and Christian Hardy; and hosts of nieces, nephews and friends.
