Going to the Petting Zoo

March 6, 2011

From Kaylee.

I remember going to the petting zoo and feeding the camels with Daddy.  That's what the one picture is of.  We had a great time that day.  The monkey was my favorite.  I miss  you Dad.  I love you, Kaylee

Walking the Tracks

March 6, 2011

Back In 1992, I came to the United States for the first time from England and met my new cousin 'Eric' for the first time - through extended family when my mom married his Uncle Warren. Anyway, after a long trip from the JFK airport, in New York all the way back to Johnstown, we all went to bed exhausted. In the morning, I asked what there was to do and Gram called over to Eric's (just the other side of the river in Krings). He arrived with two air guns, a pistol and a lever action rifle and upon opening the doors simply says "which one you want?" to which I was surprised but quickly responded "I'll take the pistol!" (for those who don't already know, guns are pretty much banned in England - so this was a real treat!). So, we set off walking - turning at the RR crossing and walking up the tracks......trying to understand each other (I had a very thick English accent and Eric's was just typical western PA) but we managed to commicate in our own way. After shooting about anything that moved and running out of both pellets and compressed air cylinders, we headed back. As we approached the RR crossing at Krings, I heard a rumbling......and asked Eric when the next train was coming.......to which he replied "I dunno?".......at the same exact moment, a massive train came rolling around the corner - It was the biggest train I've ever seen in my life and looked like a 3-story building looming over us........there was nowhere to go - Eric simply said "Jump!!!" and we jumped down into the trees along side the river. Once the train passed, we gathered up ourselves and walked the rest of the way back to Grams house. The best part is - I told Eric that within my first 24-hours in America, I have shot a gun, walked back the tracks and dodged a train - everything I hoped America would be!!! We never told anyone about this.........but it has been a lasting memory from nearly 20 years ago - and will stay with me forever as a great memory of Eric. RIP Cous! Julian.
