Tribute on Behalf of Cousins Chama

Dear uncle,

We already miss you so much!

You had the best and most entertaining stories, you were so knowledgeable and intelligent, there wasn’t a topic that you weren't familiar with. You were very approachable, receptive and very calm. Your warmth was so welcoming.

Since falling ill you really braved the illness, and never once complained and always soldiered on with Military precision.

We thank God as he gave you the strength and extra time to see your sweet grandchildren!!

You were very supportive and had time for everyone in our family. You bonded with every generation including your nieces and nephews. You attended one of our Chama meetings and you blended in so well with us and we spent a wonderful day with you.
You were always so present and never missed an opportunity to meet with family for any occasion you were aware of. Such a big part of us is gone from our physical presence but your memory lives on forever.

What a joy to know you are in heaven
( Romans 10:9, ESV: "because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.") with unspeakable joy, peace and learning more about the Lord. In your perfect form there is no more pain, sorrow, worry, tears ever again.
Salvation is for all it is not denomination, race, tribe or specific to any kind of grouping it is for each and everyone who acknowledges Christ.

Always love you and miss you dearly.

Mortal as we all are, some people just seem to have that ambiance of immortality...one of them was Eric. But then the reality of his mortality dawns on you when you begin to internalise and process this surreal tautology - his absent-presence or present-absence - and are able to comfort yourself as you endeavor to find closure by saying.... "It is well...because even in death, there is PEACE..RIEP

TRIBUTE FROM CHARLIE IN PHILADELPHIA

My dearest beloved brother Eric. On Monday I mourned your departure. Today I celebrate your life. I celebrate your love, your humility, your kindness, your selflessness and your willingness to be there for everyone, any time and all the time.

I don't think you had the word "no" in your vocabulary, or even knew the definition of the word. Whether I needed school fees as a kid, or dad needed help with the bills, or it was buying and chinjaring a goat for Christmas, or I needed a job, or a ride to boarding school, and needed pocket money, and a ride from boarding school. Or someone needed a ride to the hospital, or I needed a ride to the airport, or from the airport...I never heard the word "no"...(that poor car). And this is just the tip of the proverbial iceberg. I know I'm speaking for most of the people here.

Today we celebrate a precious son to Festus and Grace, a wonderful brother to six brothers and three sisters, a loving husband and dad, to your beautiful wife Maryanne and to three amazing sons, Isaac, Alex, and Peter; and just a good human being to relatives and friends.

Nobody whose life you have touched ever remained the same. You are a God-sent. And now that your work on earth is done, go ahead and take a rest with the angels. You deserve it.

Uncle Eric was like a father to me, I spent most of my school holidays at their home in Moi Air Base. I would always look forward to spending time with my cousins and take the opportunity to learn from Uncle Eric a few things about planes and how the military works. I was super happy when he got to take me inside some of the planes for the first time in my life, it was really a dream come true… forever thankful for that opportunity. I was always fascinated to see how disciplined the military was, starting from his shoes for National celebrations, which would shine almost as if you could see your face, then to him being picked up by his military drivers Kioko and Lamweya at least the 2 I could remember, who would ensure that his car was sparkling clean and left without any spot. The level of respect was so evident, and salutes could be seen when his car passed the military and police.

He was always there for my dad (Johnny) they were really best friends, they had developed a bond that was so unbreakable and I am sure many can attest to that. We travelled a lot with Uncle Eric and his family, and he would always be so chill enjoying his happy times during those holidays. Indeed, memories made of such moments. My dear uncle has played a very big role in my life while growing up, as most of you knew how difficult and mischievous, I was back in the days and dad would always call Uncle Eric to help talk to me and I would be sent to him to receive words of wisdom. He was there to arrange, plan and see me through my transition to adulthood, he was there to take me to my first boarding school, he was there when things were tough in our lives at some point, he was always there in our lives. I really cannot thank you enough for all your love, kindness, generosity, and patience. Words cannot describe enough the kind of person you were. We are forever grateful to have had you in our lives and to be a part of yours. Uncle, you will be missed, and you will never be forgotten, may your soul rest in peace. SAY A BIG HELLO TO ALL OUR FALLEN HEROES UP THERE WE LOVE YOU ALL

Heartfelt regards,
Samuel Horia Njoroge

I will miss my dear Brig. I reminisce one time when we met in Cairo I. 1994 after a single engine training plane he was flying to Kenya from UK engine failed and he had to land in Aswan. I accidentally bumped into him at the Hilton in Cairo. We had dinner in my apartment and he joked about that hair raising experience as if it was child's play. My college mates who met him were so impressed with his wit and charm. That encounter brought us closer and we  always hugged and joked about the Cairo incident whenever we met. May his soul rest in peace.

Tribute from Major Karebe

Eric & I have come a long way. We first met in the 1960s during our high school days when we lived in South B. Neither of us knew that we would be buddies /brothers for life. Together with our other friends we underwent many adventures, like all boys do. One very memorable one was walking in 1970 to Athi River with our other brother the Late Arthur Kayihura. After our schooling, we got separated but for just a year- Eric went to Soroti Uganda for pilot training while I went to university in Ukraine. But our destiny was co-joined. We both returned home after just a year and both of us joined the Military. He went to the Air Force while I joined the Army. As young officers, we were always together sharing experiences in North Eastern and other corners of Kenya. Even after I retired earlier from the Military our path of life was still the same. Our sons were in Strathmore School and we would meet in the evening to pick them. Eric was humble but no pushover. When it came to fighting other boys he would be in the forefront. We have been true brothers “ from another mother”. Now he has departed, but he will always be in our thoughts. May his soul Rest In Peace

Eric my dear brother, my friend, my confidante...if I say I have no words I shall be dishonest...It is the space that will limit my tribute to you....all the adjectives and adverbs cannot complete who you were to anybody that met you..You were my playmate as we grew up...in Londiani we even went hunting antelopes with Simba our dog. In Londiani You protected me when dogs barked at us as we walked to school every morning. That left in me an indelible mark of a hero.... and a hero you remained all through to the last breath...the breath you struggled so hard to sustain. Undeniably for me this is the toughest departure to come to terms with. Even tougher is writing this tribute as it confirms I will never talk to you or communicate in any way in this world. Am consoled by the fact that you are in the right place rejoicing with the angels and those who preceded you.. Dad, Mum, Rodger, Oscar n Sammy. God will fill the void you have left in my personal life and in the family. REST AND DANCE WITH THE ANGELS

His Life

EARLY LIFE

March 31, 2021
Eric was born in Bunyore District of Western Kenya, the fourth child in a family of 10 children to Festus Isaac Assanga Esikhaty and Grace Muthoni.
Growing up the son of an educated postmaster, his father's frequent transfers uprooted the family frequently as Festus initiated Post Offices in Kericho, Kipkelion, Londiani, and then onwards to Molo, Naivasha and Nairobi.
Life spent moving frequently had a great influence in shaping a resilient character in Eric and his siblings; all of whom loved and looked up to him for advice and protection. He shares a very close bond with each of them in a special way - Peter Mabwa, Macy Ndung'u, Joyce Assanga, the late Roger, William, the late Oscar, Catherine, Charles and the late Sammy.
Unabated, Eric pressed on with his education and went on to successfully sit his Cambridge certificate at Highway Secondary School, and later on to Nairobi school to complete his A-Levels in 1971.

CALLING TO SERVICE

March 31, 2021
Perhaps the biggest surprise came as he chose to enroll in the Soroti School of Flying in Uganda, established by the United Nations, and contrary to everyone's expectations of him pursuing a career in the medical field.
The disbanding of the Flying School under the tyranny of Iddi Amin pushed him on to enlist in the Kenya Air Force, and continue the pursuit of a career in aviation and of military service on 9 August 1974.
Eric's service in the military saw him flight instructing for many years, attend many courses, get posted to numerous appointments, and rise through the ranks from 2nd Lieutenant in 1974 to Brigadier in 1999.
Many appointments took him away from home, traveling around the world but all the while remained an available father, friend and colleague.
Among his notable appointments was the Shorts Tucano Ferry flight that sent him away from home for many months, and which highlighted his leadership, risk management and teamwork qualities in a mission  that was not free of issues.
Eric continued his service in the Kenya Air Force for many fruitful years, until retirement in January 2002.
Eric took his talents to the Security portfolio of Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB) where he carried out duties in the spirit of service to others; exemplified by his evacuation orders of endangered employees during the election violence in 2007.
Moving on from KCB to the Kenya Airport Authority once again showcased his leadership talents and soft people skills in a staff re-structuring that saw the Agency grow in employee numbers, and raise the security ranking of Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA). Many of Eric's KAA colleagues became his work family, and to this day pass their warm regards to Brigadier long after his retirement.

FAITH AND FAMILY

March 31, 2021
Eric married Maryanne Mbuthia Esikhaty on December 7, 1985 and have 3 boys - Isaac (39) , Alex (34) and Peter (22) .
A loving husband to Maryanne and an inspirational father to his sons, Eric lived and led by example; he modelled humility, integrity, hard work and demonstrated steadfast loyalty. With his wife, Maryanne, they have made numerous sacrifices to provide opportunities for their sons; passing on the passion for aviation, and supporting Alex's choice to get into aviation training, Isaac's pursuit of a University degree in Canada, and Peter's Engineering aspirations in Mauritius.
The blessing of 2 daughters in love, Heidi and Millie, who have blessed him with 3 grandchildren, Azaliah, Josiah and Aaron have filled Eric's heart with love over the last 3 years. He has taken great enjoyment in holding them, and meeting with them over video calls in spite of the unprecedented times. All this provided more time to fill out crossword puzzles - a favourite past time.
Eric was baptized in the Catholic Church on December 6, 1985, a day before his wedding, and attended the St. Paul's Chapel with his family on regular Sundays. On 26 March 2021 , Eric chose to profess his faith in our Lord Jesus Christ as his Saviour, trusting Him alone for Salvation. He understood that God's mighty hand was in control of his destiny by Faith.
His Friends and family will miss him so dearly. We will keep Eric's name on our lips, and share the memories of him in our hearts with each other - he shall live in our hearts forevermore!
