Yesterday I received the shocking news of Ernest Johnson’s death. Grief overwhelmed me. Ernest’s death opened the floodgates of recall, taking me back to 1974 when we met through mutual friends.

At the time, Ernest had graduated from Trinity College and was pursuing accountancy qualifications. I had graduated from Bishop Anstey and was working at a medical laboratory with the intention of attending university in Canada. We struck up a beautiful friendship - J’ouvert, cinema, Carnival fetes, scrabble, or just chillaxing. He was an avid reader of novels and disliked eating vegetables.

Ernest was a gentleman in every sense of the word. My mother adored him; all my friends liked him. He was tight with my uncle Tiny who was a hockey coach and Mavericks Mas man. Hockey and Mas ̶ interests Tiny and Ernest shared.

He was a placid human being, always smiling, never angry even after I left for Canada and had not written in four years. When I returned in 1979 we ran into each other on Frederick Street, Port of Spain. I apologized for my lack of correspondence. Ernest was as sweet and understanding as ever. He smiled and said: “I told myself another one bites the dust.”

Ernest was generous, thoughtful, caring and supportive. When I was a newbie driver and my mother refused to risk her life in my car, Ernest offered to be my mentor. A few nights a week he supervised as I drove my new car through Petit Valley, Diego Martin, Maraval and St Ann’s so I could familiarize myself with driving in Trinidad.

Decades later, I now realize that Ernest was one of a kind; a gem, a great guy. I always felt he had the makings of a loving, devoted husband and father. I wasn’t wrong, judging from the tributes I heard at his funeral service. I am glad Ernest got his "happily ever after" – a wife who loved him and whom he deeply loved, and four children who thought the world of their dad. No one deserved more happiness than Ernest Brian Johnson.

My deepest sympathy goes out to his beloved wife, Marissa, and loving children Nickola, Amanda, Tonya and Nathan. May his love give you the strength to carry on without his physical presence.

Rest in Peace Ernest. Thanks for the indelible memories.

Ernest was a classmate of mine at Trinity, the one that had a smile and a friendly word for everyone. When I returned to Trinidad 9 years ago, he reached out to me and reconnected me with our old pals from school for which I am ever grateful. We were together on a ZOOM lime just days before he passed - so glad I got to hear his laugh one last time.

So long pardner, we have all been truly blessed to have known you.

I first met Ernest when he started dating Marissa, who is one of my longest and most enduring of friends. My girlfriends , aka The Nighty Patrol, had to accept each new partner. He had to pass the test. Smiley did so in leaps and bounds. Our tight knit group eventually expanded to include the husbands, who still had to understand our monthly tea gatherings that went well into the night. Girls only, with the occasional acceptance of the men in our lives, joining some of the fun. . Ernest was part of this tight knit group, our kids all understand this bond we'll share forever. He will always be in my heart, a gentle and kind soul with a quiet smile that took in all of our shenanigans and accepted them. Love you always Smiley. May you Rest in Peace, playing your Hockey now, once more freely and unencumbered

Dearest Mariss, Amanda, Nickola, Tonya and Nathan,
Thank you for sharing your final moments with your beloved husband and father with us. The service was heart wrenching and lovely.
You were all blessed to have each other and share the joy and love of family which lasts an eternity.

When a man's nickname is Smiley, his reputation precedes him rendering him unforgettable and he certainly was.

My son and I found him warm and welcoming, smart and funny, eager to exchange stories, (even a near death or life threatening one) with ease and compassion. He gave undivided attention, even if he met you 5 minutes ago.
His friends and family are better for having known him.
May he rest in peace now.

Heartfelt condolences to you and your children Mariss and May you find the peace and courage to continue with him in your hearts.
Much love,
Maria and Ayodhya

I had the pleasure of working with Mr. Johnson for three years at Insurance Brokers West Indies Limited (IBWIL). He will be remembered for his love for his work, his diligence, intelligence and brilliance! He was always there to listen, advise, share and assist. We shared many wonderful moments and even after we parted ways we always stayed in touch with each other. I will miss our chats and always remember his warmth and wonderful smile. Rest in Peace EJ!

First of all, i would like to express our condolences to Marissa and the children, especially Amanda, who was my daughter Nicola's friend from Maria Regina.
I met Ernest when i entered Trinity College in 1970. Ernest was a sixth former, and lived just down Norfolk St from me in Belmont. We played on the Winning Team for the Colleges Hockey League in 1971. Smiley, as we called him played hockey after College with Notre Dame. We remained friends all these years, with me meeting him at his work place IBWIL many times during the year. He would always make time to chat with me during those times. We both loved pan and would always meet up by the Savannah for Panorama. Ernest was a quiet, kind and generous person, who rarely ever got mad with others. We will surely miss that million dollar smile my friend. May you rest in peace Ernest 'Smiley' Johnson.

Ernest . . . . EJ . . . . Smiley.

Thank you for being.

For the unconditional friendship.

For the instinctive sharing.

For the indelible memories.

For living up to the ideal that defines the value of someone's life — leaving the world a better place than you found it.

Yours was an innings well played my friend. I wish it did not have to end.

To your family, the one you built with your wife and children: my deepest deepest condolences.

Not today, not tomorrow or maybe any time in the near future but . . . one day . . . one day all of us touched be Smiley will smile when we think of him. It cannot come soon enough.

Rest In Peace my friend . . . Rest in Peace.

Marissa I would like to extend my deepest condolences to you and the entire Johnson family. Ernest - a gentle and gracious man. A loving husband and father. Someone who I was very fond of. A family who stuck together. Four children who epitomise a perfect combination of their beautiful parents.
Ernest, we had some good laughs in the pool at Aqua Therapy. My daughter Hannah enjoyed teaching you, and I could tell you enjoyed it for the time you were there. I know that you will be smiling down on your precious family now. Rest easy. You are gone but will never be forgotten. May God give your family comfort at this time. That smile...

Ernest "EJ" Johnson gave the gift of true friendship to those he came across. He did not shun anyone. He was particularly dedicated to his high school classmates.

He had a good sense of humor but was mature and available for serious conversation. There was no better friend than "EJ".

My condolences to his wife Marissa, his four children, relatives and many friends.

Dear Ernest
I am still in deep shock. I will miss you sorely but I take solace in the fact that you did so much for this planet and our friends. No human is indispensable and the world is full of paradigms. We cannot change the way the world was created by our Heavenly Father but we can live an honest, simple life dedicated to your wife, Marisa and the wonderful in such a short life. God has a place for you in his kingdom. Rest In Peace. We will meet again.

FOOTBALL FAMILIES

May 4, 2021
Ernie, Marissa and ourselves shared many a heart stopping moment on the touch line watching our girls, Nicola and Bianca, slogging it out on the football field for Team SJC.

Those years have left us with fond memories and are how we want to remember him.

The friendship formed on the football field endures today with Nicola and Bianca

Ernie knew how sport can be the foundation of everlasting friendships as he experienced the same on the hockey field.

And although he had to leave the game earlier that he deserved to, his time spent on the field of life was more productive and valuable than many lifetimes.

Well played, Ernie.
You are the man of the match

EJ at IBWIL

May 3, 2021
Memories of IBWIL will forever be in my heart and soul.  Ernest was a very quiet boss.  My first job at 18, my life lesson from Ernest was:. "Mistakes made are ok, because you will learn from it and will never make that same mistake".  I am thankful to have had such a good boss.  May God grant you eternal rest EJ...

Sincerest condolences
