Her Life

Life Sketch

September 27, 2012

"It was a sad but joyous end to a life that was so deeply felt amongst her children, family and friends. Ma Esther Logan aka Kaydee-Yarzeah; a driven and often spirited soul, led a voyage expanded upon understanding, and enhanced by the way in which she expressed her love for everyone."

Born in Kpoluken to the union of Dudi Gleeyor and Karley Doe on May 20th,  1924 in Ziah Town Konobo District in the Republic of Liberia; adolescent Esther was placed in the Sando Society by her parents when she was just 9.

At age 15, when she and other girls from her group were dancing for strangers; little Esther was spotted by Nathaniel J Logan who watch her dance as guest of the paramount chief of Konobo district. According to tradition, the late Honorable Nathaniel J Logan paid her dowry and off he went with her to Grand Bassa County.

In Grand Bassa newly wed, Esther had to adapt to a new environment after giving birth to a bouncing baby boy. Speaking her native dialect became very murky as she always got the two dialects mixed up. We even joked and called it ‘Krahn-ssa.’

When her husband Nathaniel J Logan was tapped to serve as the Bassa Governor to Grand Gedeh County; he moved back to Grand Gedeh with his beautiful young wife. In Zwedru, she gave birth to Naomi and Maconi at the Martha Tubman Memorial Hospital.

In Grand Gedeh, Ma Esther served as juror and traded with the locals. At times she and her husband would walk miles from Zwedru to neighboring counties to trade.

As a housewife she was very dedicated to her children and late husband. Her childhood life had its good and tumultuous sides; but she managed to triumph as a very strong and successful woman.

Very religious member of the AG mission in Zwedru; Ma Esther loved other people children whom she saw as her own. She was so overprotective of her grand children till everything they did was never wrong in her eyes but yet she would chastise them behind closed doors to show discipline.

Her first child and only son Joseph Logan’s terrible accident in Buchanan which led to his death landed a serious blow to Ma Esther. When we tried to hide it from her; one morning she calmly said: “my children, why it is that Joseph’s not calling,” adding, “I know he’s dead.

Though she triumphed during those times but his passing changed everything. Mom’s biggest saying was that she believed “once your heart is clean with God, no one can hurt you.” She taught us how to be humbled.

On her last night with us, we spent her final hours holding her hand and praying with her. We assured her that we would keep the family together. When mama peacefully passed on, we took comfort knowing that she was with her Creator, and she was at peace.  Somehow it helped ease the pain of losing our mama, our teacher, our friend and most of all, our mother.

Ma Esther! Mama! Kadee-Yazeah! Na! Na! Na oh! Please answer me! Till we meet again, your footprints will forever be in us.
