Eugene Herman Hall, loving husband and father, died on January 29, 2021 at the age of 95 at his home in Granada Hills, California. He suffered from Alzheimer’s disease for several years and on January 4, 2021 he tested positive for Covid-19. His desire was to be at home and he received hospice care.
Eugene (Gene) was born in Waterloo, Iowa, to Max and Martha Hall ( Bentroth). He was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers Marvin Hall (sister-in-law Marylin) and Roger Hall. He was survived by his wife Donna Hall, son Allen Hall, daughter Kathryn Hall and her husband Robert, grandchildren Melissa Toole, Michael Toole and his wife Stephanie and 3 great grandsons, and several nieces and nephews.
Eugene lost his father at a very young age from a tragic car accident. When he was a young teen his mother and her 3 young boys, made the trip west from Iowa to California making Van Nuys their new home. Eugene graduated from Van Nuys High School in 1943.
On December 28, 1943 Eugene enlisted in the US Army Air Force and served until November 11, 1945. He was assigned to the 401st Bombardment Group (H) 612 Squadron and was stationed in Deenthorpe, England. The planes he flew in had a triangle with an “S” inside it on the tail art. Eugene was a ball turret gunner and flew in several B-17 Flying Fortress planes over Germany. From his first mission in 1944 to his last mission in 1945 he flew on 35 missions. He was the last surviving crew member at the time of his passing.
After his WWII military service he returned to England for a year to study art and interior design at The Chelsea School Of Art for one year. He returned to southern California and attended Woodbury College and graduated in 1949. After college he worked at Gilfillan Radar Development and Manufacturing Company (later bought by ITT in 1964) where he met his future wife, Donna Bahl. They were married on April 16,1955 at The First Lutheran Van Nuys Church.
Eugene and Donna bought their home in 1957 in Granada Hills, California and raised their family there and stayed in that home their entire married life together. He was known as one of the few original owners in the neighborhood. When he retired at 65, he would take daily walks around the block and loved stopping and chatting with the neighbors, old and new. For a few years there was a group of retired neighbors that would go to breakfast once a month. He really enjoyed those times.
In the early 1960’s Eugene became a longtime member of Our Savior’s First Lutheran Church in Granada Hills, California. Eugene served as an usher and an Elder in the church for many years. He had a strong faith in Jesus and happily served.
Eugene was a talented artist and loved to create oil paintings. He enjoyed working on his home and loved entertaining guests being a gracious host. Holiday time with his family was his favorite time of year and created many loving memories for the family to cherish. Some fun little things he did that brings us fond memories were how He loved fine dining at a restaurant with cloth napkins and tablecloths would always comment about it while at the restaurant and he loved to have little plaques made for things or occasions around the house.
Eugene was a godly man who lived by Luke 10:27
Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind and Love your neighbor as yourself. He was much loved and greatly missed until we are together again in Heaven.
No services were held due to Covid-19 restrictions. A private memorial with family was held. Buried in Oakwood Memorial Park, Chatsworth, California
