Mr. Eugene V. Sampson passed away on 1 October, 2022 at the age of 93, while residing at Shawnee Estates in Xenia, Ohio.He was born in Utica, NY, son of the late George and Amelia (Gorlak) Sampson.He was a graduate of Utica Free Academy, where he was an outstanding gymnast.He continued in many athletic endeavors, capturing the 1950 Utica indoor doubles tennis championship with his partner, the late Fred Ceazar.During the Korean War he joined the U.S. Air Force, obtaining the rank of Staff Sargent.After his tour of duty, he attended Mohawk Valley Community College and Utica College.He was employed at General Electric for 32 years.
On July 25, 1959 he married Joan C. Gudyka at Holy Trinity Church in Utica, NY. Surviving is his wife Joan of Xenia, Ohio. Son Paul and daughter-in-law Gayle, of Xenia, Ohio. Son Robert and daughter-in-law Nancy, of Greer, South Carolina. Two sisters-in-law, Dorothy Sampson and family of Marcy, NY and Carol Gudyka and family of Fredericksburg, Virginia. Eugene was predeceased by his beloved son Daniel Stephen July 16, 1985, his sister Irene, and brothers Fred and Raymond, brother-in-law Joseph Gudyka, nephew Steven Gudyka, sister-in-law Dorothy Sampson and family of New Hartford, NY.
There will be no calling hours. A Catholic mass and burial will be announced at a future date. It will be held at Sacred Heart St. Mary’s Church in New York Mills, NY where he was a parishioner for over 50 years. Internment will be at Holy Trinity Cemetery, Yorkville, NY. Donations may be made in Gene’s memory to the Sacred Heart St. Mary’s Church fund.
