ForeverMissed

This memorial website was created in memory of our loved one, Eugene Shubert, 69 years old, born on December 23, 1952, and passed away on July 22, 2022, Friday, at about 9:00 PM. We will remember him forever.

Eugene's life and death bore witnesses to God’s grace, love, faithfulness, God’s long suffering and God’s righteousness.

Eugene lived a life of a pilgrim's life.  He searched for the truth diligently.  At a very young age, he fell in love with the gospel taught in the Bible.  But throughout his life he also struggled with sins, disappointments, and brokenness.  In his final days, he wrestled with God like Jacob did in the wilderness in Genesis 32. Finally, by God's grace, mercy and God's enduring love, and through his strengthened faith in Jesus Christ, Eugene was able to enter into the Sabbath rest with God in peace, with the hope of resurrection and immortality.

May Eugene's life story bring encouragement and comfort to all who were touched by him, as well as to all pilgrims who might be struggling and weary in their own life journeys towards the Promised Land.

His Life

Childhood

July 31, 2022
Eugene was born in 1952. His parents were Polish immigrants. His mother immigrated to the United States through the sponsorship of a Seventh Day Adventist Christian.A few years later, his father came to the US to join his mother and their son. They had more sons after the couple reunited in the United States. Eugene was the first one to be born in the US.When Eugene was about five years old, his father walked away from home and never returned. His mother raised Eugene and his brothers singlehandedly by herself.Conceivably life was not easy during Eugene’s childhood.Nevertheless, Eugene remembered himself to be a healthy, bright and happy child, having a love for nature and having an inquisitive mind.In his adolescence year, his favorite activity was to hike with his friends on the trails in the Yosemite National Park; sometimes they would hike for days, seemingly having inexhaustible energy. He also spent a lot of time on the California beaches, playing sand volleyball. But deep inside, Eugene did feel a shadow of gloom because of the absence of his father.

Youth and Adulthood

July 31, 2022
After graduating from high school, Eugene took several temporary jobs to earn money in order to support himself. He had worked as a construction worker; he also worked as a car salesman in a Toyota dealership. One night, after having to work long hours at the dealership, he fell asleep behind the wheel on a highway on his way home.As a result, his car drifted cross the lane, and when he woke up to step on the break, the car started spinning like a propeller and then suddenly stopped. The car was pretty much ruined, but miraculously Eugene was completely uninjured. When Eugene described the event later, he said that an angel supernaturally stopped the car and spared his life. The car he drove was the company owned car.Consequently, Eugene was fired from the Toyota dealership. After that incidence, Eugene decided to say farewell to his salesman career, and to peruse his intellectual interest.

At the tender age of 16, Eugene demonstrated high interest and intellectual gift in mathematics and physics. He audited in the math classes at the local universities and colleges near his home.Later he managed to enroll himself at the Math department of University of California at San Diago (UCSD).

But in the last year of study at UCSD, he got a supernatural experience that led him to be consumed by the passion to study Bible prophecies, in particularly, the prophecies in the Book of Daniel. Before his math final exam, he spent most of his time reading the Bible and writing down the revelation he received on the Book of Daniel. Then in the next morning he took the exam and got a perfect score, score A. Based on the revelation he received from that supernatural experience, he wrote a theological book “The Ends of Time”, which was an exposition and interpretation of Danial’s prophecy in Daniel 9-12 and the Book of Revelation.(See 【1】【2】)

That year he graduated from UCSD with Summa Cum Laude. One math professor in Statistics at UCSD expressed his wish to take Eugene as his graduate student. But Eugene declined the offer, saying that he wanted to pursue his interest in relativity theory. Then Eugene enrolled in the Math Department at University of Texas at Dallas (UTD) to study relativity under a professor who specialized in that field.

The study did not go very well, because he was not appreciated by his professor. Eugene was wounded by the attitude of his professor towards him and lost enthusiasm in his study.Eugene was a nonconformist. In one math class, the students were required to sit in a series of seminars given by some invited guest professors in very specialized fields, and write a paper in the end of the semester to get a Pass credit. Most students couldn’t understand what were presented in the seminars, but to get the Pass, they just copied the notes as their papers to turn in.  Eugene, in his over-righteousness, refused to comply, thus he failed to turn in his paper, so he got a score F for that class. Then he became depressed and somehow neglected registering for the next semester, consequently he was dismissed from UTD and never received the graduate degree.

Nevertheless, his going to UTD was not totally fruitless. At UTD, he met a Chinese student who grew up as an atheist. At first, they debated about atheism and Christianity, each trying to defend their own world view. But by God’s miraculous work of the Holy Spirit, this Chinese student was eventually led to Christ and inspired by the spirit of prophecy as well, under the influence and teachings of Eugene and his books. Therefore, this Chinese student considered herself as Eugene’s spiritual fruit. The two formed a lifelong friendship and spiritual partnership and became like brother and sister in the Lord.

In the later part of his life, Eugene worked as a school teacher to support himself, teaching mathematics and physics in several middle schools, high schools and junior colleges.

Like all of us, Eugene had flaws and deficiencies.Even though gifted and creative, Eugene (in the opinion of his friend) lacked systematic discipline. He could be sentimental, eccentric and hopelessly impractical at times. This was perhaps partially due to his lack of a father figure in his upbringing to guide him and strengthen him.Yet God loved him.According to Eugene’s own recount, one day God gave him a vision (or gave him a strong conviction) telling him that despite of his lack of an earthly father, God would be his heavenly father. But later, God spoke through an angel telling Eugene that God was displeased with him because of his sinful nature.

During theological debates, Eugene was typically outspoken and uncompromising. He was certainly a “’yes’ is yes, ‘no’ is no” type of person.Sometimes His undiplomatic ways and mathematical exactness could make him sound impersonal and appear to lack humility gentleness and compassion. He also liked to used witty ironic expression to make a point. Thus, some of his theological opponent considered him offensive. Even some of his theological sympathizers found it was hard to communicate with him at times.Nevertheless, to those who knew him well, he was a genuine yet humorous, openhearted, loving, generous and altruistic person in life.He was remembered by those who were close to him as a sweet friend and a compassionate “big brother”. He was remembered by some of his surviving relatives as a “good brother” and a “favorite uncle”.

Theological Contributions and Prophetic Voices

July 31, 2022
Eugene was baptized in a Seventh Day Adventist church when he was in the age of 13.He was inspired by Ellen G. White’s work, i.e. The Great Controversy and The Desire of Ages etc., when he was about 18 years old.

Eugene had a great loved for the Bible. He had a great zeal to defend the true gospel. He hated false doctrines and had protested against a major heresy that was taught in his church; according Eugene’s view, the heresy taught pantheism and denied the atonement of Jesus Christ, and thus was a doctrine of demons.(See 【3】【4】【5】)

As a result, he got into trouble with his local church leaders, and he was banned from coming back to the church property. When he tried to go back to the church to tell his story to the church congregation, He was taken to the civil court by the church leaders, charging him for trespassing. On the day he supposed to appear in the court to face the prosecution, God told him to remain silent, not to defend himself. So, he did not try to defend himself in the court, and only answered briefly and factually the questions the judge asked him; and then the judge dismissed the case, and he was released.

Yet, this unfair treatment by his church casted a dark shadow in Eugene’s heart and mind, he felt bitter for many, many years. He considered himself to be a whistle blower trying to expose a crime to his church leaders, yet he himself was made a criminal by the same church leaders. He had nightmares from that experience; in some of those bad dreams, he would be taken by some policemen and put into jail as soon as being found to attend the church.

Nevertheless, God honored Eugene and rewarded him in an unexpected way; God gave Eugene a precious spiritual revelation, which was the understanding of one most important end-time message----the three angels’ message.God opened Eugene’s eyes to see the parallels between the three demons’ messages (Revelation 16) and the devil’s three temptation (Matthew 4) vs the three angels’ messages (Revelation 14), and Jesus’ answer to the devil’s three temptations (Mathew 4). (See 【6】)

Later, Eugene and his friend had private bible studies on the Book of Revelation.Through their discussion, they got important understanding of Jesus messages to the seven churches (Revelation 2-3). (See【7】)

Because He Lives

August 15, 2022

On July 11th, 2022 Monday, Eugene’s friend sung the hymn “Because He lives” to him. After he heard it, he said: “That is beautiful!”

Because He Lives

God sent His son, They called Him Jesus
He came to love, Heal and forgive
He bled and died, To buy my pardon
An empty grave is there to prove my savior lives

Because He lives, I can face tomorrow
Because He lives, All fear is gone
Because I know He holds the future
And life is worth the living
Just because He lives

And then one day, I'll cross the river
I'll fight the life's final war with pain
And then As death gives way to victory
I'll see the lights of glory, And I'll know He lives

Because He lives, I can face tomorrow
Because He lives, All fear is gone
Because I know, He holds the future
And life is worth the living
Just because He lives

METAMORPHOSIS

August 7, 2022
On July 15, 2022 Friday, Eugene’s friend played audio Bible passages, Romans 8:18-39 to Eugene.  After finishing the Scriptural listening, Eugene’s friend said to Eugene: “Remember the documentary Metamorphosis you took me to watch many years ago about the butterfly? Right now, you are experiencing this process of metamorphosis, just like a caterpillar does.  Your body is disintegrating.  You feel you are dying, just like a caterpillar must have felt when its body is dissolving into a molecular soup in its chrysalis, being helpless and seemingly hopeless.  But in fact, God is doing His magical work of re-creation in that chrysalis. Using that molecular soup of the dissolved body of the caterpillar, God is recreating a brand-new life.  At the designated time, from that chrysalis will emerge a new creature——a beautiful butterfly——free, glorious and transcendental.

"For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us.  For the earnest expectation of the creation eagerly waits for the revealing of the sons of God.  For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of Him who subjected it in hope;  because the creation itself also will be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God.  For we know that the whole creation groans and labors with birth pangs together until now.  Not only that, but we also who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, eagerly waiting for the adoption, the redemption of our body.  For we were saved in this hope, but hope that is seen is not hope; for why does one still hope for what he sees?  But if we hope for what we do not see, we eagerly wait for it with perseverance.

Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.  Now He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He makes intercession for the saints according to the will of God.

And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.  For whom He foreknew, He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son, that He might be the firstborn among many brethren.

Moreover whom He predestined, these He also called; whom He called, these He also justified; and whom He justified, these He also glorified."

---- Romans 8:18-30

By this promise we know, God is doing His work of re-creation in YOU also; He wants to transform you into a glorious new being, in the image of His Son Jesus, so that you may be glorified as a son of God also, in the day of the resurrection——of the revealing of the sons of God——this is the earnest expectation of the whole creation. This glorious hope will be fulfilled in you if you endure to the end, be faithful to the end and submit to God’s will to the end.

METAMORPHOSIS

August 7, 2022
"Therefore we do not lose heart. Even though our outward man is perishing, yet the inward man is being renewed day by day. For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, is working for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory, while we do not look at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen. For the things which are seen are temporary, but the things which are not seen are eternal.

For we know that if our earthly house, this tent, is destroyed, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. For in this we groan, earnestly desiring to be clothed with our habitation which is from heaven,  if indeed, having been clothed, we shall not be found naked.  For we who are in this tent groan, being burdened, not because we want to be unclothed, but further clothed, that mortality may be swallowed up by life.  Now He who has prepared us for this very thing is God, who also has given us the Spirit as a guarantee. So we are always confident, knowing that while we are at home in the body we are absent from the Lord.  For we walk by faith, not by sight. 8 We are confident, yes, well pleased rather to be absent from the body and to be present with the Lord.

Therefore we make it our aim, whether present or absent, to be well pleasing to Him.
For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive the things done in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad. "

---- 2 Corinthians 4:16-5:10
