Let the memory of Evan be with us forever

Evan attended Red Apple Elementary School and Walden Middle School, graduating from Washington Park High School in 2003. He enjoyed photography, writing, spending time with his friends, playing football and paintball. He always wanted to serve his country, just like his grandfather did. As a child, he talked about jumping out of helicopters and flying airplanes. He and his friend, Eric, planned to join the Army out of high school. But Evan was denied after his physical because of sclerosis in his back. When Eric was killed in action in 2005, Evan was devastated. Evan often visited Eric's grave and took care to see Eric had flowers there. Undeterred by his medical condition, he reapplied and after two tries was accepted April 25, 2006. He took basic training at Fort Benning, Georgia and was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 6th Infantry, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, based in Baumholder, Germany. He was sent to Iraq on November 1, 2006. Evan earned the nickname "Ton of Fun" from his fellow soldiers. He was known for his big love of people, taking care of people, raising the spirits of those around him and his sense of humor. He is survived by his parents, Kevin E. and Lisa M. (Neufeld) Bixler of Racine; a sister, Amy Theresa Bixler; grandparents, John and Carol (Bonini) Neufeld; great-grandmother, Emma Bonini; aunts and uncles, Lori and Matt Fritz, Cindy Green, Beverly and Ed Badendick, Kay Bixler, John B. Neufeld; great-aunts and great-uncles, Gloria Kowbel, Jerry and Carol Bonini, Terry and Donald Carey; special friend, Naomi Jacob; cousins, other relatives and dear friends. He was preceded in death by his uncle, Curt Bixler; his grandmother, Dorothy Bixler; and great-grandparents, Ernest Bonini, Emil and Esther Neufeld, great-uncle Walter 'Kuba' Kowbel and cousin Christine Kowbel. Evan was awarded the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart.
