Earl Warren the Gladiator

January 10, 2019

Little known to the average angler, Earl Warren was a great friend to the fleet. He had served as the unofficial legal guardian of the sport fleet for decades, assisting with the purchase and sale of vessels, rescuing boat and landing owners from sticky situations as needed and so forth. It's with great sadness the news of his sudden passing was received.

Among many other notable accomplishments, he spearheaded the implementation of our fillet-at-sea regulations, allowing the processing of the catch aboard. He oversaw the declaration of the basses and marlin as recreational only fisheries in California. He fought for the harpoon swordfish fleet and against the implementation of a driftnet fishery for swordfish (he didn't always win).

Although his professional expertise was in real estate law, he was equally adept in front of the Fish and Game Commission and Administrative Law Judge. As an avocation, he mastered the sections of Maritime Law most pertinent to the charter fleet and assisted most of the most well known names in the industry at one time or another.

In addition, he served as a core member of the Los Angeles Rod and Reel Club for many decades and as its President for two terms. He served as the Executive Vice President of Los SueƱos Resort, Costa Rica, from it's planning to the present. He and his lovely wife Pamela teamed up to recently complete several IGFA salt water Royal Slam Club honors between them, including Pamela's Billfish Royal Slam.

Life is far from certain. Pick fishing instead of that easy chair and every day be the person you'll want to have been. Earl did.
