Fanny, 8, and her friend Minnie Warner, along with Fanny’s sister Lizzie, aged seven, were out for a walk on Aug. 24, 1867, when they were approached by a man. He gave Minnie one and a half pennies to buy some sweets, and offered Fanny half a penny if she would leave with him. She took the money but declined the offer. She was picked up and carried to a nearby field. Fanny’s head was found on a pole, minus her eyes and ears. Her leg had been cut off and her internal organs removed.

I hope that her innocence and lack of comprehension of evil protected her from some of the extremes of terror that the more worldly would suffer in his situation. I hope her spirit was strong and found a surprising degree of comfort through the transition out of this mortal frame. Life is but a dream if that is how you want it to be
