Prof. Femi Soyinka had the heart that cared completely!

June 28, 2022
Across the bridge - We thank thee
I first met the Prof. during ICASA 2005 in Abuja Nigeria, and oh what a gentle soul! Prof. Femi Soyinka had the heart that cared completely! He had the smile that brought so much pleasure and the love that brought joy beyond measure. We will miss him dearly.

But until then, we will hold onto the blessed hope of resurrection, looking forward to the bright resurrection morning when the redemmed shall proclaim:
Death is swallowed up in victory.
O death, where is thy sting?
O grave, where is thy victory?
- I Corinthians 15:54-55

From Prof. Akute

STORY FROM PROF. AKUTE
Thank you Doc. I have beautiful  memory of the great Dermatologist- a kind of reminiscence  rather than a tribute!
The story centred around one of my juniour sister- in- Law in the late 1970s when I was serving as a S/Reg. in the Department  of Surgery.
She had this terrible dermatitis & presented at Wesley Guild Hospital- one of the satellite  campus of lfe Teaching Hospital complex. Prof . Soyinka saw & treated .
For good 10 years, the lady was free of the dermatitis & of course  abandoned  our house only to return  when there was a recurrence  of the ailment! This time around I have left Ife Teaching Hosp. Complex  & lost contact with Prof Soyinka
Pity I don't  know the miracle cure & subsequent  medication has not been that effective!!!
Our last encounter was, as earlier recounted,  in E.l UCH ,  not an  auspicious moment  for such a discussion!
May the soul of the great dermatologist rest in peace amen. Once more my regards to Mummy & the family. We, all,  lost a great man. It runs in the family.

Science, élégance et générosité

June 25, 2022
Amine

I was a Senior Registrar in Neurology at the Department of Medicine. OAUTHC, Ile-Ife between December 1983 and July 1984. I was to go to UCH, Ibadan for further exposure in neurology but my HOD in Medicine blocked the process. I then opted to train in dermatology as the training was available in Ife but the same HOD in Medicine asked me to leave the Department as my choice was in a different department. It was Professor Soyinka who willingly accepted me as the first resident in Dermatology. That was a huge contribution to my professional and academic pursuits. I will always remember this kind gesture of my teacher, Professor Soyinka. May God Almighty comfort the family.and those of us who benefitted from his impactful earthly sojourn in Jesus name. My joy however, is that he has gone to rest in the bosom of the Lord.

A wonderful man

June 22, 2022
Prof Femi Soyinka was a very dear friend and colleague during my time in Nigeria from 1995.  I was so privileged to have been able to support his Ambassadors for Hope project and other HIV related work. He and Kofo were always hospitable and generous. I learned much from them both and shall always have find memories of them. Femis contribution to HIV prevention is unparalleled.

A valued colleague and teacher

I was very sad to hear of "Prof" Femi's passing. We worked closely together from about 2000, setting up a programme to get funding that NELA could use to provide grants to civil society organisations across the SW region, to strengthen the HIV response.  I learned so much from working with Femi, especially when he quite rightly pushed back and helped me understand what would work best in the context and emphasised the leadership role that NELA and the team should play.  Over at least a dozen visits to Ibadan I had warm and generous invitations to his home, many learning experiences, and some slightly unexpected adventures.  KNowing and working with him was a wonderful experience.

Thank you for sharing these heartwarming photos on this page.
My family and I convey our condolences to all the Soyinka  family as we mourn the passing of our old family friend.

Many years back after returning to Nigeria Prof Soyinka enjoyed keeping up his German with our mother, with whom he also shared an exciting passion for cultivation and landscaping as can be appreciated in his delightfully interesting garden farm.

As a senior colleague, we remember Prof Soyinka fondly and with great admiration for his inspiring academic achievements and his dedication to pioneering much  needed services in dermatology and HIV.

Rest in peace.
