Beloved Florence Bamidele, it is ‘Goodnight but not Goodbye’
Words are insufficient to capture the life and legacy of this uncommon and formidable woman of virtue, character and breeding; the matriarch of the Familusi and Makanjuola families; proud daughter of Imesi-Ile who lived a life of impact and service - to her family, the professions of teaching and nursing, the Church and humanity at large.
The depth of our love for our mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, aunty and leader is only best imagined.
We are thankful for the inspiring life of Florence Bamidele Makanjuola (nee Familusi) and comforted that she rests with the Lord and lives on through us all.

My dear Deputy Governor"s Grandma,
I never met you but I feel I knew you so well. And I guess I did, through your lovely granddaughter. She came to commiserate with me over the death of my father and left my place for your house. That day we discussed in great detail what an amazing, exceptional woman you are and how blessed DG Aishah was to have you as a grandmother. Little did we know you would soon be going home. But you live on, through your legacies, your children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. You finished your race well and strong and have passed on the baton. I am blessed to know your granddaughter and you through her. Sleep well grandma. May your sweet gentle soul rest in perfect peace, Amen.

To a remarkable woman and pillar of strength to not only her family but also to her community and everyone who came across her.

Shetu as she is fondly called by most of us has grown to be a great mother, wife, a formidable banker, great sister, amazing friend and beloved daughter. We believe that she has been able to achieve some of these traits and great values which she learned from Grandma and the repository of knowledge vested within her.

She was indeed a force to be reckoned with from all the great stories written and told, one of the great women this country was blessed with and an inspiration to us all. We pray for Allah to grant her rest and all the loved ones she left behind, the strength to bear this irreparable loss, ameen

Big Mummy, like many others, I fondly called you, as the older sister to my mother.

I remember as a young inquisitive 7 year old girl, you allowing me visit with you, the hospital you ran alongside Big daddy, of blessed memory, at 32 Agege motor road where we lived.

Despite my tender age, I saw how stern yet compassionate you were with your staff. And how much respect you had for them as they did you. That single visit was indeed a memorable one.

Of precious memory are the times I came back to Nigeria then, with my family and visited Mama Imesi, of blessed memory while she was with you. Your face always lit up on seeing my children and husband.

God bless your precious soul ‘Big Mummy’. You lived an impactful life.

You will forever remain in my thoughts and prayers. Most especially when I celebrate my wedding anniversary on the 18th of December.

Condolences to my dear cousins and their families. God grant her precious soul, eternal and peaceful rest .

My earliest memory of granma was in my early 20's, when I visited with her granddaughter Shetu Ndanusa, I remember grandma was so welcoming so sweet, her smile so warm. It was delightful ,pure joy watching three generations of women (grandma, mommy Bandele Makanjuola Ndanusa and Shetu Ndanusa Ahmad) as they chatted n laughed in excitement over Shetu's upcoming wedding .

Over twenty years later, I visited you for the last time, and a memorable visit it was.
Thank you grandma for your prayers and blessings, I will never forget you.
You are a beautiful spirit, you impacted my life greatly in just one meeting. Your life was exemplary and admirable.
You are greatly missed and even more, greatly loved.

My memory of Mama Yombo, as she was popularly known, was as a kind-hearted and cheerful woman. She was a self-sacrificing person who cared for people's welfare. She was conscientious and took interest in people and would go the extra mile to assist all who came in contact with her. She was particularly loyal to very busy husband and assisted him to look after the children. Her happy and amiable disposition towards people might have contributed to her long life in a harsh environment like Nigeria. She will be remembered by all of us whose lives she had touched. As we cherish the sweet memory of her exemplary lifestyle, it is my prayer that all of us will be comforted and become wiser in the way we live and relate with people around us in Jesus name. Amen!

A Life lived in the service of others is a life truly Lived.

Through your life ‘Grandmummy’, you have inspired us all to put others before self and none before God.

In a world of ‘to each his own’ you lived a life of helping others along their journey through your acts of kindness, prayers, words of advice, thoughtfulness, gifts and Love. All these you did without any expectations whatsoever.

Not everyone has that gift to make others feel good in their presence, but you did and you not only treated all equally, you made the extra effort to let them know that they matter.

You will be sorely missed Grandmummy
Thank you for being the giant on whose shoulder we have all stood tall.

Grandma Florence, Hands of Love

Your face is pure of love and light
your heart full of all that’s good and bright
soft smiles that welcome, grins that put at ease
eyes the kindest one has ever seen

Your face is pure of love and light
your fervent wishes guide and protect
up before dawn, you pray and toil
for forebears, offspring and strangers all

Your face is pure of love and light
gnarled hands that cared, served and soothed
heavy steps, a slow and measured pace
tell tales of hearts and lives you’ve saved

A hundred years alive,
your wrinkled skin glows much the same
telling of things you’ve seen and places you’ve been
your storied life so blessed and fulfilled.

We went to visit our Great Grandma most Sundays with our Mum. Eventually, we would mostly visit her, our Great Aunt Kunbi and our cousins on the way to the airport before traveling to school.

We loved Grandma very much because she was very caring, kind and supportive. When we spoke to her she would ask us about school and our parents and really listen when we talked to her. Whenever she spoke to us, she would add a “dear” to the end of her words to make us feel welcome in her house. Her smile was warm and infectious; and she always lead with love.

She showed us how to be caring to the less fortunate, how to be kind to everyone and always support family.

She was and still is a beacon that brings all of us together through her kindness and positivity and she will be sorely missed. We would all do well to emulate Great’s bravery and compassion.

To you Great, we would like to say our final goodbye, knowing you will forever be in our hearts.

Love,

Mama we love you and miss you but the memory of your exemplary life is fresh in our minds.

My first encounter with Mama was about five years ago, despite that she was advanced in age you could feel the warmth and peace around her. Her elegance but simple life was evident. She was full of life and could feel anyone's presence even by their footsteps.

I was introduced to her as Yomi's brother and the atmosphere beamed with love and care. I have never seen someone who truly cares for people as Mama. She was hospitable and homely.

The time spent with Mama was full of joyous moments. Though she was stricken by age but her memory and sense of humour were astonishing.

There subsequent other visits and you could feel the tranquillity around her and the blissful touch of spirituality.

We will surely miss her. Rest on in the bossom of our Lord till we meet to part no more.

On behalf of late Rev. & Mrs David Oni Oguntade we sincerely pass our condolences to the family of Mama Makanjuola. Yemisi Oguntade's friendship with Bamidele and Yombo had grown if I may say more than 50 years! We're sister's not neighbours or Schoolmates! I remembered with fun eating and playing in the house at Agege-motor Road. Our own house is behind Rainbow Cinema, beautiful old days! Shuttling through the Cinema, as our"shortcut" to the house! It's a Nostalgic feeling! Mama was always ready to tell me when it was home time! Guess when teenagers start to goggles...! I remember with fun your soft spoken voice! We love you, rest in peace in Jesus name.

Dear Mummy Eko,

What pops into my head, is the fond memories we had of you as a Nurse. To my siblings and I, you were Florence Nightingale reincarnated! From a child’s view lens, you were the Smartest, Swiftest nurse with a lovable disposition in the whole wide world. You always had a caring word and shiny sparkles in your eyes for everyone. You were everywhere at the same time, shuttling between the house and the clinic like a whirlwind .
Thanking God for a life well spent and the fond memories that will always remain.
May you forever, rest in the bosom of the Lord

A LIFE WELL LIVED
      ANGEL IN OUR HEARTS

__To everything there is a season,
a time for every matter under heaven;
a time to be born,and a time to die;
a time to plant,and a time to harvest;
a time to weep, and a time to laugh,
a time to mourn, and a time to dance.
-Ecclesiastes 3:1-4

I celebrate the life of my mother, Florence Bamidele Makanjuola, acknowledging both our joy in the gift that her life was to us, and the pain that her passing brings, but comforted by the joy and assurance that she is sleeping in the bosom of her maker.

She was a remarkable woman, she had 5 biological children, 15 grandchildren, and 16 great-grandchildren.

The family and her role as mother, grandmother, and great grandmother was the most important thing to my Mum. This is where she drew her strength and left her legacy. Mummy really
enjoyed her family most of all. She was there for all of us through the good and the not so good times strengthening us with the Words which never departed from her mouth and by which she
spent her life.

Maami was the kindest, most loving person I've ever known. She mothered everyone, so much
so that friends would often call her mummy. She took this as a compliment and never shied
away from being there for others who needed support in one way or another. As her daughter, I am blessed to have grown up with the most incredible role model, a beautiful soul who taught me to always be myself and to always push myself to learn more to achieve my God given potentials. I will miss her smile, her laugh, her sage advice, and her bubbly personality.

I know I am not alone when I say that she will be in my heart forever, but there is a hole in my heart that will always be there. I am not sure how I will cope with losing my best friend, confidant, mentor, and mother. I do know that I have been my mother's little sidekick all of my
life, and I hope and pray by His grace that I follow in her footsteps and become a strong woman who can face traumatic loss, just like she would want to. No-one is ever as interested in everything you do as your mother, or as proud of you.

Mother was strong, selfless, positive, prayerful and her presence lit up any room she entered. She loved
to let people around her know how much she loved them. My mum's joy and true happiness for life was truly remarkable.

Ever since I was a young child, my mother taught me to live every single day to the fullest and not take any thing/one of value for granted and always see the beauty in everyone. Her passing can be an inspiration for each of us to take advantage of the small beautiful things life has to offer every day.

Special thanks loving hugs from mummy to you my Makembi Prof Kunbi Banjo who had practically put her life on hold to stand in for all of us with strength and unconditional love as our mum had done all her life.

She loved all of us and her memory will continue to live on in us all.

Amen

I really appreciate the Almighty God for a life well spent by mama Makanjuola.
I met her through Prof.Banjo and her grandchildren.
We moved in to Oremeji street, as newly wedded couple, and as a school teacher I got into the family through home lesson.
But along the line mama took interest in my personal life.
She picked motherly, spiritual, and financial interest in my life and family.
During my reproductive trials she supported both physically, medically and financially, invited me most time to her bedroom, shared life experiences of her own ups and down, and how God helped her out, she thought me the ways of the Lord and winning battles of life on your knees, with patient, humility and giving to God's work, minister of God and the poor..
I will really miss her smiles, life experiences, gist, and giving spirit.
May her sour rest in perfect peace

Adieu My Rare Gem Mummy

I forever will celebrate you my Matriarch and first recognisable mother FB ,

You were  not just a rare gem, the ' mother hen" spreading her wings like an umbrella over your whole extended family but also remarkable in making sure all that came across you in all walks of life made something of their lives.

I thank God for making me 'your last born'.

You nutured me from infancy gifting me with fundamentals of a successful human being: love and warmth, discipline, cleanliness,  strength and boldness;  building in me confidence to weather storms of life. You must be looking back and pleased at the good woman you left behind.
May your legacy live on mummy.

ADIEU, MUMMY EKO.
Tribute to Chief Mrs. F.B. Makanjuola, on behalf of the Descendants of Oba Richard Oladipo Makanjuola, (ROMAKDU), the late Owa Oye of Imesi Ile, in Osun State Nigeria.
We fondly called her Mummy Eko, during our childhood days because she lived in Lagos while we lived in Ibadan.
She was married to our late father's elder brother, late Dr. O. O. Makanjuola, the then Chief Consultant, TB Service, Lagos.
As children, we were always looking forward to our annual Christmas attire, from Lagos, which for so many years never for once failed, up until we started entering Higher Institutions.
A very accommodating and caring woman, her home was opened to all members of the extended family, who needed to be in Lagos for whatever period and whatever reasons.
We always looked forwards to spending holidays in Lagos.
I remember our eldest brother, late Prince Abimbola Makanjuola aka Kabila, started living at the Idi Oro house at a very tender age, under the parental guidance of Mummy Eko, so much so, that it took the rest of us a long time before we got to realise that he was our blood brother.
I also had a taste of Mummy Eko's hospitality, for two full years, for my Advanced level studies.
Sleep on ma, you will forever live in our hearts.
May God grant your soul eternal rest.

Mummy lived a fulfilled life in the service of God and Humanity. Caring, Hardworking, Loving and Selfless all describe you.

As the last child of Baba Gilbert, born posthumously, you were there at the right time to step into the 'father and mother' shoes for me and for this, I am eternally grateful. Thank you and remain blessed in the bosom of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Adieu.

She supervised our children's school run, made sure they were safe and protected. She was always there for everyone, with her welcoming smile every time. We shall miss her sorely. I met you for the very first time in 2017. Despite your advanced years you were very warm and welcoming. You had heard of me, as one of the sisters of your late son in law, the late Dr Taiwo Banjo, who had unfortunately passed on 20+ years ago.You said Ibeji, aburo Taiye??!! nice to meet you. Your kind gesture and sharp memory at over 90 warmed the cockles of my heart. My children met you too and were glad they did. May you rest in peace in the blossom of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. No doubt you will be sorely missed !

But you live on, through your legacies, your children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. You finished your race well and strong and have passed on the baton. I am blessed to know your granddaughter and you through her. Sleep well grandma. May your sweet gentle soul rest in perfect peace, Amen.

A mother's love is always with her children. Losing a mother is one of the deepest sorrows a heart can know.
But your goodness , your caring and wisdom live on-line a legacy of love that will always be celebrated.
I am so glad I knew you

Her Life

Childhood & Early Life: Lagos, Ibadan & Imesi-Ile

May 27, 2021
Florence Bamidele Makanjuola (nee Familusi) was born on December 18, 1921, in Lagos. She was the first child of Leah Oretipe Familusi (nee Fagbo) & Gilbert Ifajaiyeyomi Familusi, both of whom hailed from Imesi-Ile (Ile Akeegun family compound) in modern Osun State. Oretipe was a renowned dressmaker and Alaso-oke , Gilbert a shoe designer and cobbler who produced Opekete Shoes; both lived at 12, Bamgbose Street, Lagos.

Florence had a loving, happy and communal childhood where good graces, a high sense of integrity, prayer and the love of God were instilled from birth. She was the first of ten surviving children within a polygamous family consisting of her mother and step mother. Her father, Gilbert, was soft- spoken but commanded much respect; he was loving to all his children, especially gentle with his daughters and had great expectations for their education; this was extremely progressive for that time. Her mother Leah was slight of build and a disciplinarian, especially with money - Florence was to emulate this sense of thriftiness, industry and financial independence her entire life.

Education: Teaching or Nursing?

May 27, 2021
Once Bamidele could put her right hand over her left ear as was customary in those days, she enrolled in primary school. She attended Methodist Primary School Tinubu and Ebute Meta Methodist Primary School. Such was her brilliance that upon completion of Primary 4 she was admitted to the prestigious Queens College, Lagos.
Early inspiration for Bamidele’s eventual career as a nurse and midwife was found in Florence Nightingale, the famous British noblewoman and founder of modern nursing. Nightingale was horrified at the injuries and treatment of soldiers during the Crimean War, serving on the front lines to offer them food, medicines and asking for support from her wealthy family. Because Gilbert spoke admiringly of Florence Nightingale, Bamidele was quite enamoured of her and held a lifelong passion for the nursing profession and the care of others.
At some point, however, Gilbert urged his daughter to pursue a career as a teacher instead. Obediently, she left Queen’s College Lagos and proceeded to Home Craft Center, Ilesha - founded by the British couple, Mr & Mrs Ludlow – to train as a vocational studies teacher. She later enrolled for full teacher training at United Missionary College, Molete, Ibadan; she was elected as Head Girl at both institutions. Following UMC, Bamidele returned to Home Craft Center as a teacher. She taught for five years in fulfilment of her bond to the government, but never forgot her dream to one day become a nurse.

England: Foundations for a Career in Nursing & Midwifery

May 27, 2021
After the Second World War, Florence accepted a scholarship from the British Government which was arranged through one Miss Blunter to study Nursing and Midwifery in the United Kingdom. Ahead of her departure, she worked as a nurse-in-training at Jericho Nursing Home Ibadan. She departed for England in May, 1946 on the HMS Almanzora Battleship, an armed merchant cruiser. She finished her nursing course in 1949 and served as staff. During the course, she stayed in ‘hospital quarters’ as hotels were quite expensive.  Florence studied midwifery between 1949 and 1950 at the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary and proceeded to postgraduate studies in obstetrics and gynecology at Chelsea Hospital for Women in 1950. She worked at the Mild May Mission Home Hospital in England and at the Women’s Hospital, Toronto when she and husband Tunde lived in Canada for a year in 1962.

The love of a grandma is unique. God must have given grandmothers to us to liven up our lives, to make our lives more complete, to make us well rounded and better human beings. You played a big part in my childhood , I remember when she’ll call me into her room after doing something wrong and heard someone chastising me, she’ll speak to me and I’ll just be fine and happy again even though I don’t always understand most of the things she says because she likes parables . But she said something to me which I didn’t understand till I grew up , I was surprised that I didn’t forget ,she said “ THE FIRST STEP IN BEING SUCCESSFUL IS BELIEF” , I always thought it was a wrong statement till my mother explained it to me that you have to believe in yourself , what you do and mostly in God , because without him your life will always be incomplete. I miss you big mummy and Rest In Peace

Thank you Mummy. Rest on
