It's been a year, since you entered The Realm of the Ancestors, your job was done and rest was warranted. Gone but never to be forgotten. Despite sadness left behind by your departure, the family is slowly adjusting. To the family continue to remain faithful to each other.

Mrs Hunter was the School Superintendent at the Miracle Provider Church and also a Sunday School teacher. She loved children and was so caring. She would make sure the children did their assignment. One thing I remember most is that she would she to it that the children had a snack because so many came to church without eating. She was that sweet generous person. When she lived in New York we would call each other and complain about ourselves. I would call her on her birthday October 4, she always ask how do I remember, I would tell her because my son Maurice and you share the same birthday. She was a sweet soft spoken person. Rest in peace Sis. Edna Hunter.

In the short time that I had the pleasure of knowing Mrs. Hunter, I had grown very fond of her. I observed how she really loved her family and most of all God.
To the Hunter family, my sincerest condolences. Remember to always cherish all the times you all had with her (whether good or bad). God gives us one opportunity to live on this earth and Mrs. Hunter lived her "best life."

I met Mom in the late 60’s when I was taken home by her eldest daughter, Debbie, my best friend (back then we a were all vetted by our friends parents) The moment I came into her presence I felt at home and I was quickly made part of the family. I remember that she was busy raising her family, working and studying for her nursing career. But even with a full plate she always found time for others. Over the years we lost touch, but God always saw that our paths crossed every few years and it was always a joyous reunion and we never missed a beat..,loving on each other like not a day had passed. Then one day several years ago who do I see as a new member of my church... it was Mom. I was so happy because it felt like home and before I knew it she was teaching our children’s Bible classes and became our Womens Prayerline’s minister of music, so to speak (smiling). Edna Hunter loved The Lord and did the work He called her to do with love and obedience. Rest now sweetheart you have earned your heavenly mansion. Until we meet again...

Such a sweet, sweet woman of God with a beautiful smile and warm eyes... I always looked for her visiting. She would reach out to greet me and pull me in to sit and chat for a moment and always asked about our children. I love her so much.

My grandmother was an amazing woman I appreciate all that she has done for me. Spending almost every weekend at her house we came home to big cooked meals (fish, gumbo) and loads of snacks/candies. Saturday’s was filled with shopping (Easter outfits) and hours of dance class for me and karate for kj. She was as dedicated as we were to make sure we made every lesson/practice we each excelled and flourish in our trade with the help of her by our side. The weekend was filled with fun but granny also wanted us to be educated and well versed in the Bible as my brother and I took on memory verses to study for the week and cite back to her the following week “Our Father Prayer” being her favorite of all. Granny was always teaching us the importance of saving “every penny counts”. Importance of school and always having God first! It feels so surreal to say you’re gone but I know you’re in a better place with your god and other loved ones I will forever cherish what you’ve done for me and know that you’re presence is still with me

Ms. Hunter is the mother of my best friend, and she always gave me that same sense of motherly love. The last time I saw her, I asked her if she remembered me and she said "yes, Theresa" and smiled her gentle smile...and I smiled too. God bless you Ms. Hunter. Peace and love always. Theresa❤

We, the Jay family are forever indebted to you for how you helped my mother to raise me to become the man I am today. You took me shopping, you took me to a Florida, you let me stay at your house. You took care of me. You prepped me for real life and I Thank God for you and your life. You sacrificed for me and treated me as your own. You came and watched me get married. You gave me great life advice and coaching. You made sure I went to summer school and helped tame my temper. You fed me your best gumbo and always had an invite for me for the holidays. I LOVE YOU! ❤️

Some say dying is to be fired from life while others say it's the ultimate promotion! For Ms. Edna its the ultimate promotion as she excelled in leadership while employed here on this earth. I've only had brief encounters with her but they were all memorable. She like most nurses had a way of quietly evaluating you by peering into your very soul. She was definetely a people reader! She carried out her life's calling with the utmost CLASS, DILIGENCE, and INTEGRITY. Congratulations Ms Edna on your most recent Promotion!!!!
May God grant Peace to the family!

I met Mrs. Edna several years ago, always good company. The hostess with the most pleasant attitude and desire to comfort those in her company. When Debbie and I moved to NC in 2015, we invited her to spend some time, getting up and down the stairs was a challenge but she did it by sitting on the steps and pulling her self up and sliding one step at a time down. I remarked to her that she had shown me how to navigate if at some point walking up or down should become a problem. I am glad she had the opportunity to visit with us before her health limited her mobility. Rest in Peace my friend!

I never had the privilege and honor to meet her, but I know from everything Crystal has told me that she was a very wonderful, loving, and giving woman who is loved and missed more than words can express. Rest in peace, Ms. Edna.

Her Life

Obituary

February 7, 2021
Revelation chapter 14 verse 13 (B): Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord from henceforth Yea saith the Spirit, that they may rest from their labors and their work do follow them.
Mrs. Edna Hunter (Mommy) was the last of 13 siblings to Edna Augustine Theard and Romallis Theard. Mommy was born, raised and received her early education in New Orleans, LA. As a young adult she married Mr. Anthony Lee Jr. and out of that marriage Debbie and Pat were born. We shared fond memories of Mommy working in the beauty parlor, which is still in existence, even after Hurricane Katrina, and located on Dumaine St. and North Galvez St. in New Orleans, LA. Much to our delight she also worked in a school cafeteria where we became the recipients of a lot of extra food.

In her early 30s, Mommy relocated with Debbie and Pat to New York where some of her other siblings had already relocated. Once in New York she began to pursue her career as a professional nurse. Wow!! She kept it moving taking care of business and providing for her family. She was always smart which was noted back in high school when she was promoted a year ahead. Her mother (our Granny) was immensely proud of her baby girl. With such determination and faith, her legacy begins.

During the mid-60s Mommy married Mr. Henry Hunter and out of that marriage, her twins, Kenneth and Karen were born in Newport News, VA.

Mrs. Hunter (Mommy) attended and completed the license practical nurse program (LPN) at the School for Special Surgery in New York City and obtained her license to practice in the state of New York.

She worked as an LPN as she earned her associate degree in nursing (AAS) at Bronx Community College which is in the Bronx, NY. Once licensed as a Registered Nurse (RN), she embarked on her career in providing geriatric care, her passion, at Pelham Bay General Hospital, Workman Circle Nursing Home, followed by Hebrew Hospital for the Chronic Sick).

Still achieving her academic goals, Mommy (along with her daughter Debbie) attained her Bachelor of Science degree (BS) in Health Care Administration from Iona College, New Rochelle, New York which ushered her into the position of Director of Nursing (DON) at Hebrew Hospital for the Chronic Sick. Make no qualms about it, Mommy was an advocate for the elderly and she also served as a Quality Assurance consultant in several Nursing Home communities.

Mrs.Edna lived a Christian life and stayed active in the church community, and always put God first in her life.

The Lord used her mighty fully, to embrace, protect and maintain dignity of the age and the elderly. What an awesome powerful demonstration of the love of God if that is not enough, her three daughters carried on the legacy in the medical field and believe me Mom was so proud: Dr. Deborah Barrow, PhD Karen Hunter Bryan LPN, and Chaplain Patricia Cooper LPN. Both attended nursing school and were granted nursing licenses to work in New York State and in the state of Georgia. Kenneth Hunter, twin to Karen Bryan, preceded our Mommy in death in 2017 at the age of 48. Now, they are back together as the Father’s will be done.

Legacy: Impacting the Kingdom of God through service

February 13, 2021
Church affiliation:
Miracle Provider Church and Trinity Baptist Church: served on the nurse’s ministry Emanual Baptist Church: served as adult Sunday school teacher and on the usher board. Mrs. Hunter was also a devoted member of the nurse’s ministry, caring for those in the congregation.

Greater Centennial AME Church: she continued with teaching Bible classes to children. She also provided music for the early morning prayer session for the ladies of Greater Centennial but particularly enjoyed the Bible study group.

Mommy enjoyed traveling especially taking cruises, music, dancing, and taking care of her pet dog Bruno. Her home hosted many good times. But most of all she enjoyed taking care and spending time with her family. Having her sibling’s children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren around brought her joy.

She leaves behind to cherish her memory: three children Debbie, Pat, and Karen

9 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren, nieces’, nephews’, cousins, and numerous friends.

Her love will live in the hearts of all who knew her forever. We got this and we will not let you down!

Thinking of you mom!

First,  Happy heavenly birthday Ma
I was speaking of you recently at my BFF of 55 years home going service. Relaying how she had worked with you at what was Hebrew Home in the 90’s and how surprised she was when she found out that you were Debbie’s mom (we had attended Jr high(?) and high school together) which truly changed the work dynamic for both of you.
Thank you for years of wonderful memories. Greater Centennial’s, Childrens church will never be the same without you. Until we meet again… I love and miss you mom.

Trainer

February 23, 2021
I had the pleasure of training Ms Hunter (mom, I would call her) for a few months. As her trainer she would amazed me at the things she was capable of doing. I would say “Awesome”once she was done with her set. She would smile and say, “ Do you say awesome all the time?” She would share stories of her life growing up and moving to NY during our sessions. When I told her my mom was in a nursing home because of her health, diabetes. Ms Hunter took the time out of her day to visit my mom. I thought that was the most genuine and adorable gesture. You started out as a client but we became family. I will miss you and Iappreciate the time we had together. Sleep In Peace

Jason
