Revelation chapter 14 verse 13 (B): Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord from henceforth Yea saith the Spirit, that they may rest from their labors and their work do follow them.
Mrs. Edna Hunter (Mommy) was the last of 13 siblings to Edna Augustine Theard and Romallis Theard. Mommy was born, raised and received her early education in New Orleans, LA. As a young adult she married Mr. Anthony Lee Jr. and out of that marriage Debbie and Pat were born. We shared fond memories of Mommy working in the beauty parlor, which is still in existence, even after Hurricane Katrina, and located on Dumaine St. and North Galvez St. in New Orleans, LA. Much to our delight she also worked in a school cafeteria where we became the recipients of a lot of extra food.
In her early 30s, Mommy relocated with Debbie and Pat to New York where some of her other siblings had already relocated. Once in New York she began to pursue her career as a professional nurse. Wow!! She kept it moving taking care of business and providing for her family. She was always smart which was noted back in high school when she was promoted a year ahead. Her mother (our Granny) was immensely proud of her baby girl. With such determination and faith, her legacy begins.
During the mid-60s Mommy married Mr. Henry Hunter and out of that marriage, her twins, Kenneth and Karen were born in Newport News, VA.
Mrs. Hunter (Mommy) attended and completed the license practical nurse program (LPN) at the School for Special Surgery in New York City and obtained her license to practice in the state of New York.
She worked as an LPN as she earned her associate degree in nursing (AAS) at Bronx Community College which is in the Bronx, NY. Once licensed as a Registered Nurse (RN), she embarked on her career in providing geriatric care, her passion, at Pelham Bay General Hospital, Workman Circle Nursing Home, followed by Hebrew Hospital for the Chronic Sick).
Still achieving her academic goals, Mommy (along with her daughter Debbie) attained her Bachelor of Science degree (BS) in Health Care Administration from Iona College, New Rochelle, New York which ushered her into the position of Director of Nursing (DON) at Hebrew Hospital for the Chronic Sick. Make no qualms about it, Mommy was an advocate for the elderly and she also served as a Quality Assurance consultant in several Nursing Home communities.
Mrs.Edna lived a Christian life and stayed active in the church community, and always put God first in her life.
The Lord used her mighty fully, to embrace, protect and maintain dignity of the age and the elderly. What an awesome powerful demonstration of the love of God if that is not enough, her three daughters carried on the legacy in the medical field and believe me Mom was so proud: Dr. Deborah Barrow, PhD Karen Hunter Bryan LPN, and Chaplain Patricia Cooper LPN. Both attended nursing school and were granted nursing licenses to work in New York State and in the state of Georgia. Kenneth Hunter, twin to Karen Bryan, preceded our Mommy in death in 2017 at the age of 48. Now, they are back together as the Father’s will be done.
