He cracked up.
He loves Hawaii, golf and good food and good drink! He was so much like Jesus as the fellowship and love of God, humans and seeing/showing kindness was his daily passion.

Father Rick was a spiritual mentor to me over the years, and I miss him every day. We grew up together as neighbors and friends; we played football, hung out , stayed up late discussing God and Man, and once even fought fires together as a volunteer.
I have known many people throughout my life; heroes and friends that I have been blessed to have known. But of all of them, I have never known a man who embodied the spirit of Jesus Christ as Richard Hoynes. Truly, if Jesus were a man today, he would have ben Father Rick.
I am not a religious man, but had I known more like Father Rick, maybe I would have been.
He never saw life as mean or tragic; he was most cheerful and optimistic person I have ever met. Never an unkind word, and always with a smile and laugh. I looked forward to any time we got to spend together.
I miss him sorely, with his intellect and wit, in these trying times.

Father Rich and I roomed together in Minneapolis after he presided in a marriage ceremony involving a mutual friend. He left our room before me some he was catching an earlier flight. Before leaving, he gave me a blessing. Of course when I got to the airport to catch my flight, I received an upgrade to First Class. Coincidence ? Hmmm. Wonderful loving human being and terrific Sushi Chef. We miss you.

I knew Father Ricky as a child in North Dakota. His Grandma Lena was our neighbor, so for several summers Ricky and his family would visit, and I had a new playmate in our small town. I lost contact with Father Ricky after that but never forgot him or his smile and warmth. As a young boy he had a saying. He would enthusiastically proclaim, "Ricky Russel Hoynes, Towner North Dakota, Jet, Zoom!", and he would make a flying gesture with his arms. What life he had in him! Now I know where he was flying off to. Rest well my friend.

Rick, Chuck and Mike Hoynes used to play football with my family back when we were kids together. One afternoon, while playing a game where Rick was the quarterback he must have connected with me 4 or 5 times in a row and gave me name that stuck with me forever-- he called me 'Sticky Fingers' and it stuck.
Every time we played together, he referred to me as 'Sticky fingers'. He always had a smile on his face, as well as his heart.
One of the few people I've passed in life that I can honestly say was a good man. His passing was such a loss.

Fr. Richard was a dear friend for some 20 years and my spiritual director. He knew both me and my fiancee well. We used to have a men's group and we would all pray for each other. Some priests seem uncomfortable about receiving, but Fr. Richard was glad to receive support, encouragement, and prayer. I remember when he was assigned to a Hispanic parish - being one of very few Japanese speaking priests, and later when he was assigned to the Japanese mission, it was not simple to switch gears from Spanish, so I used to kid him with "mucho arigato" and "domo gracias." I remember, small thing though it may seem, how one of the last times I got to have dinner with him at a Japanese restaurant and, even though it was pretty difficult for him, he honored the Japanese way of pouring sake for me. That really touched me, and that's the kind of man of God he was - like Jesus. I think it was rough on him the last several months because he liked to get around and minister to people (which he still did, of course, at St. John of God), but he always showed a positive tone of helping where he could. To my old friend I can say, no more illness and constraints; you're in God's hands now; and most definitely, MUCHO ARIGATO!

Fr. Richard invited my son into the faith in March of 2014. In so doing, he also brought me back in. His warmth, humility, and cheer were the very embodiment of all this is good with the Faith. I can think of none better to have introduced my child to the Church. His acts, indeed his life, have set so much Glory into motion.

Fr. Richard was such a good friend to my brother Richard. He was also so kind to our family. He was generous with his time by blessing our homes and offering support when my sister-in-law Florence was ill. Fr. Richard was co-celebrant at Florence's funeral Mass which gave us great comfort. I spent a lot of time in the Hoynes' house as a boy as we were neighbors and my brother and I were good friends with Mike and Chuck. Rick was always so kind to us and I was struck by his maturity and sense of purpose, whether helping at OLPH or volunteering to fight fires in the California foothills. Such a good spirit, he will be missed. God bless you Rick...

I remember meeting Fr Richard at the fair. He had his own little personal air conditioner around his neck, from like Sharper Image or someplace like that. He was doing the fair in comfort and style! Praying for your family.

I am so honored to have shared so many spiritual blessings with Father Richard. It all started when I attended his mass services as a teenager. His love and happiness touched my life. From that moment I knew he would be the one to bless my matrimony and my three children. Thank you Father Richard for your godly services and may you rest in heavenly peace.

My wife Therese and I are forever grateful that Fr. Richard presided over our wedding on April 18, 2015.
A bit of a scary-turned-fun story to share...Fr. Richard did not show up for our matrimonial at St. Francis Xavier Chapel in Little Tokyo when all the parties (except him) were ready to start. We remember the panic and all the frantic calls we made to reach him. Fr. Richard was missing, and of course we cannot do the church wedding without the priest, right? We had the families/friends visiting from out of town, some from the East coast and from Japan! What are we going to do? Fr. Richard had to go to Las Vegas for a funeral the day before and apparently drove back the night before because the church staff found his car on the premises. What happened to him? Given his health conditions (which deteriorated later that year), we were worried something might have happened to him.
It turned out that Fr. Richard was sleeping in his room just across the parking from the chapel, so deeply that he could not hear the buzz on the door or the calls! The church staff was able to open the door and wake him up! Well, we were totally behind the schedule but had the happy ending as he was able to complete the wedding after all! My wife and I will cherish our time and memory with Fr. Richard and continue pray for his soul. THANK YOU VERY MUCH, Fr. Richard!
