Francine Singer, known to all as “Fran,” died peacefully in her sleep on the morning of February 9, 2024, following a brief illness. She was 86 years old.

Born and raised in Brooklyn, New York to Harold and Pauline Doff, she graduated from Tilden High School and went to work in Manhattan as an executive secretary at British Petroleum. During her time at BP, she met her future husband Arnold Singer and was engaged to him only three weeks later. They were married almost 57 years when he passed away in 2020.

Fran and Arnold moved their young family to Edison, New Jersey in 1968.Fran stayed home while the kids were growing up, but she was never a stereotypical 70s mom. She didn’t bake or go to PTA meetings. She was a unique and independent person who raised her kids with unconditional love and support and to believe they could do or be anything they wanted. She was always athletic and played competitive tennis for nearly 30 years. She loved being active, and when she went back to work, she chose to work in warehouses rather than return to a secretarial desk.

In 2007, Fran and Arnold retired and moved to Hoover, Alabama to be near their daughter Lisa and her family. They loved going to their grandkids’ games and shows and taking them on road trips. They also loved to travel and in retirement took several “trips of a lifetime” and in 2019 spent an entire summer in Halifax Nova Scotia to escape the Alabama heat.

Fran was predeceased by her parents, her sister Ilene Cohen, and her husband Arnold. She is survived by her daughter Lisa (Tim Davis), her son David (Ruth), and her grandchildren Emma and Will Davis and Amanda and Allison Singer. She is also survived by several lifelong friends, especially her best friend Roberta Waller. She was the best wife, Mom, Grandma, and friend we could imagine.

According to Fran’s wishes, no services will be held. Memorials may be made to the Hoover Library Foundation (www.hooverlibraryfoundation.org/donate), Be A Blessing Birmingham (www.beablessingbirmingham.org), or Volunteer Lawyers Birmingham (www.vlbham.org).

Professional services entrusted to W.E. Lusain Funeral Home and Crematory, Birmingham, AL.
