Celebrating the Life of Gene DeLaVergne

March 31, 2019

Francis Eugene (Gene) DeLaVergne, age 89, quietly left this earth on Sunday, March 31, 2019 in Allen, TX.

Gene was born on June 20, 1929, in Flint, MI to Harry Eugene and Marie Margaret (Dunn). He had one brother, William Joseph.  He married Hope Theresa Larkin on November 22, 1950, in Morris, MI. They had eight children during their 56-year marriage: Donald, Bill, Jerry (Kathleen O’Rourke), Blanche (Ron) Deren, Mona Welz, Cathy, Paula (Jimmy) Paulk and Gene (Joy Taillefer).

After graduation from St. Mary’s High School in Mt. Morris, MI, Gene proudly served in the United States Navy as a maintenance electrician and rose to the rank of Chief Petty Officer.  After USN retirement, he worked as a maintenance electrician for Hughes Aircraft in Tucson, AZ, and D&M Railroad in Tawas, MI.  Gene had a unique skill of working with his hands, and over the years did a lot of remodeling work on homes as well as craft-work with leather tooling, cork, wood yard decorations and beadwork.

Gene lived life to the fullest through connections with people.  He enjoyed snowmobile caravans in Michigan and golf excursions with his sons.  Gene’s family expanded abundantly when he married Hope, as she had 11 brothers and sisters. Over the years, there were countless family gatherings:  spiritual events, meals, card games, vacations and laughter.

Gene was preceded in death by his parents, Harry and Marie; brother, William; eldest son, Donald; and devoted spouse, Hope.  Hope was laid to rest in faith in 2007 and family is certain that she led Gene’s welcome at the gateway to Heaven.

Gene will be lovingly remembered by his 7 children, 15 Grandchildren and 15 Great-Grandchildren.  Gene is also survived by many adult nieces, nephews and their families.

In lieu of visitation and a funeral mass, a memorial service with military honors will be held at Bay Pines National Cemetery, Bay Pines, Florida.
