BATTLE CREEK - Services for Frank Kubes, 79, Boynton Beach, Fla., will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Battle Creek with military rites at the parish cemetery. Visitation will be 3-8 p.m. Friday with a 7 p.m. vigil at the church under the direction of Hasemann-Schumacher Funeral Home of Wayne.

He died Friday, Nov. 10, 2006, at Atlantis, Fla., where services also were conducted.

Francis John "Frank" Kubes was born July 2, 1927, at Newman Grove to Frank and Kristina (Krutilek) Kubes.

He graduated from Battle Creek High School, served in the U.S. Army during World War II and later the Korean War.

Frank married Phyllis Smith in January 1953 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Atkinson. The couple farmed near the Battle Creek and Meadow Grove communities. He later managed various restaurants in the area.

Frank owned and operated Kelly's Steakhouse near Battle Creek for several years and Frank's Cafe. He moved to Boynton Beach, Fla., where he owned a commercial fishing business. Frank was a member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Florida and former member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Battle Creek, lifetime member of the Norfolk VFW and the Battle Creek American Legion. He enjoyed fishing and hunting.

Frank is survived by his children and spouses, Les (LaRee) Kubes of Madison, Clair Kubes of Norfolk, Kellen Kubes of Meadow Grove, Carolyn (Bob) Smith of Plainview, Anita Amerson of Battle Creek, Shelly (Todd) Dahlkoetter of Stanton; stepsons, Gale (Moncia) Bergman of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Terry (Jeannie) Bergman of Norfolk; brother, Jim (Phyllis) Kubes of Battle Creek; sisters, Martha (Leo) Gillespie of Battle Creek, Marion Wiebelhaus of LaVista; brother-in-law, Roger Henn of Chandler, Ariz.; 33 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; former wife, Phyllis Kubes of Norfolk; nieces and nephews.

Honorary pallbearers, in memory of Frank's family, are Frank and Kristina Kubes, Jerome Kubes, Marjorie Henn, Norman Wiebelhaus, Nicholas Kubes and Heath Bergman.

Active pallbearers are Frank's grandsons, Andrew Smith, Perry Bergman, Franklin Kubes, James Kubes, Anthony Kubes and Caleb Bierman.
