Faithful

August 4, 2020
Here's a couple of stories about my friend Frank Couch.
1. During freshman year at Clemson, Frank lived next door. One day a couple of Johnstone Hall bullies started giving me a bunch of crap. The walls between rooms were paper thin, so Frank heard the commotion. He came over and asked what was up. The bullies left quickly with tails between their legs. Frank was a quiet man that carried serious clout. Everyone respected him.
2. In January 1975, on a Saturday morning, me, Frank and John Martin were hanging out when my Dad called from Florida to let me know that my Mom had passed away earlier that day. Frank had made himself ready to take me where ever i needed to go - in that case Athens GA to link up with my brother Chris so we could go home. Frank knew what to do and did it.
3. Best for last. In the Spring of 1981, I called Frank from Colorado and told him I'd be in Florida for a family wedding in September. We agreed to meet at the Mai Kai Restaurant (specifically the Molokai Bar) in Fort Lauderdale at 5 pm on the Saturday of Labor Day Weekend. Frank and did not speak of it again. At 430 pm on the day of the meeting, I mentioned it to my brother Chris, who said something like "when did you last talk to him? He's not going to be there." Never the less, we left the rehearsal dinner promptly, drove to the Mai Kai and entered the Molokai Bar to find Frank and Maura enjoying their rum drinks as expected. When Frank said he was going to do something, you knew he'd be faithful to his word. What an awesome friend he was!
