Francis “Frank” Kulis, 74, died suddenly, but peacefully, at Baystate Medical Center on Monday morning June 29, 2020. He was a longtime East Longmeadow and Enfield resident.

Fran as a younger man, later Frank, was born July 31, 1945 to mother Helen Ostafinski Anderson and father William Kulis in Palmer, MA as a second generation Polish-American.He was raised by his mother and industrious grandparents Antoni and Jozefa Ostafinski in Bondsville, MA.

Frank graduated from Trade High School in 1963 with a focus in printing and went on to be involved in the industry for most of his working life. He was not shy about hard work and believed any job worth doing should be done well. Frank also served his country in the Army National Guard for 6 years during the mid and late 60’s.  Shortly after, he settled in Wilbraham, built a home and raised a family in the shadow of a peaceful apple orchard for a time.

Frank was a private man, yet loved a chat. Later in life he volunteered at a local elder care facility doing what he did best, sitting, chatting, listening, and being supportive. Frank was caring and thoughtful, fiercely loyal, and supremely dedicated to family, loved ones, and those few in his close inner circle. For those lucky enough to fall under the twinkle in his eye, he will be deeply missed, always appreciated, and forever loved.

Frank leaves his partner Sally Dawson of Springfield,MA; his son Mark and partner Aanika DeVries and beloved granddaughter Elliana of Waterbury, VT, his daughter Sarah Walker and husband Sean of Ashburnham, MA; his former wife Jennifer Newton of Plymouth, MA; and several cousins in NY.

As Frank requested, services will be private.Donations in memory of Frank Kulis would be appreciated to Doctors Without Borders, online or call 888-392-0392.

His Life

Desiderata

July 13, 2020
Pops loved this, found several copies in different places.

Desiderata

Go placidly amid the noise and the haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence. As far as possible, without surrender, be on good terms with all persons.

Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even to the dull and the ignorant; they too have their story.

Avoid loud and aggressive persons; they are vexatious to the spirit. If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain or bitter, for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself.

Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans. Keep interested in your own career, however humble; it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.

Exercise caution in your business affairs, for the world is full of trickery. But let this not blind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high ideals, and everywhere life is full of heroism.

Be yourself. Especially do not feign affection. Neither be cynical about love; for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment, it is as perennial as the grass.

Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth.

Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness.

Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself. You are a child of the universe no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here.

And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should. Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be. And whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life, keep peace in your soul. With all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be cheerful. Strive to be happy.

Frank had many passions and interests over the years:

July 1, 2020
A flair for horticulture and container gardening
All things Parisian and the French Legionnaires
The allure of the desert and TE Lawrence
German food
Keeping up with current world events
Believing in the magic of Santa Claus
Napping
Art, music and film (Picasso, Miles, Brando, Eastwood, Clapton, & Van Gogh top the list)
Finding peace on the shoreline
And above all, books.

To say he was a lover of books both new and old would be a significant understatement. Any visit required navigating around teetering columns of bound printed material, and any outing may include a detour to pick up or sell additional volumes. Frank was a first-class armchair traveler of the world who could converse about any number of places, events, or times. He took much pleasure, companionship, education, and solitude from books throughout his entire life.

I just heard from an old friend from Romitos on the passing of your father Fran. I’ve know Fran for over 26 years from his days at Priority Press and he gave a lot of business. He is a great individual and fine American who would help anyone. I will greatly miss my close friend who would always stick up for you and always have a kind word for you. Fran may you rest in eternal peace and you will be greatly missed by me for all you have done for me. May god bless you.

Peace of the World

July 13, 2020
Found this handwritten quote tucked in the pocket of one of his journal/note organizers, written on a small yellow legal pad (of course)...seems fitting I guess....

When despair for the world grows in me
I go and lie down where the wood drake nests and the heron feeds
I come into the peace of wild things who do not tax their lives
with forethought of grief.
I come into the presence of still water and feel above me the day
Blind stars waiting with their light and for a time I rest in the peace of the world.
And I am free.

-William Blake

Frank and I at Romitos or other coffee shops!

July 4, 2020
Frank and I shared a love of good coffee shops,(any coffee shop where we could sit down and enjoy conversation). We started many a day at the Romito Coffee shop in East Longmeadow.
Talking about our books read and to be read, movies seen and to be seen. Talking about the local characters at Romitos. Sharing stories of our families, I came to know Mark and Sarah through our conversations. My wife Cindy was also a friend of Franks. We met with him every summer after our move to Bozeman, Mt. I will miss this amazing friend who was filled with humor, compassion, strength and love.
