His Life

Short biography

December 22, 2013

Daddy was born October 10, 1922, the youngest of three children to Nicholas H. and Freda Catherine (Trost) Burkett.  Born in Hyndman, PA, he went and graduated from Hyndman High School in 1942.  His father had many occupations, inculding owner of a confectionary, teacher of math, carpenter.  Daddy was drafted into the Army in 1943.  He was in Belgium, Luxembourg and landed at Omaha Beach on D-Day.  He was in the Battle of the Bulge in the Ardennes, and was then transferred to a hospital because of trench foot.  He came home on the I'll de France, and finished his duty till August and was honorably discharged.  He then worked at the Celanese Plant, where he met my mother.  He was hired on at the Kelly Springfield Tire Company, and stayed there for 37 years...retiring in March of 1983.  Mom and Dad were married on May 24, 1947 in Frostburg, MD. He had his first heart surgery, a four vessel bypass, in Oct 1982 in Washington Hospital Center.  He went into cardiac arrest just after surgery, but survived.  Many more (probably 8 or more) caths and stents were to follow.  His only child, a daughter Cathy, was born August 11, 1953.  She was, and still is Daddy's little girl.  We had a camp along with Pappy and Grandma Burkett at Whipple Dam, now Rothrock State Forest.  We kept this until after his grandchildren, Jeffrey and Jeremy were born.  He also had 4 great-grandchildren, Garrett, Baylee, Paige, and Landon..in order of birth.  Daddy and Mom enjoyed retirement, traveling to Bermuda, Aruba, Florida, Tennessee, Hawaii and Alaska.  He was retired for 30 years, nearly to the day.  He became ill in February, and then again in March.  He died March 28, 2013.  He was at peace and ready to go.  I love him dearly, and miss him so much.
