Taxi Driver

April 16, 2013
I met Fred when my daughter Ashley was a young teenager. In the summer, she wanted to volunteer, babysit and spend time with her friends. However, being a single mom, I had to work. So, I offered Fred a job as head taxi driver and told him I would pay a fee for each round trip drive he took. He refused my money but the favor seemed to take on a win/win life of it's own. Fred finally had something valuable to do that made him feel needed and my child needed a positive male role model. Fred kept a calendar of Ashley's busy schedule and NEVER missed a pick up time for what turned out to be his assignment for a few summers. At times she joked that Fred yelled and screamed at other drivers and drove like a madman. But they always had fun together and arrived at their destination safely. Years later the tables turned and on occasion, she would pick Fred up for a Giant run or a doctor's appointment.
