Hey Number One, Number two here. Hard to believe you've been gone 2 years. I came across some of the material you showed the kids on the launch program, when you did "show n tell" for Scooter's class, along with an Astro Elecronics patch, and it made me smile. I remember how proud he was to have his uncle come to school. I think that means that you're still watching over us, God knows we need it! Love you Big Brother, rest in peace.

Fred,

We are thinking about you, Donna and our family on this second anniversary of your passing. I actually had a Dream Saturday night, that you were in, and then realized that it was the second anniversary; I guess you wanted me to know in case I missed the email from Kathy (our sister). Rest In Peace brother. We miss you. Wayne, Betty, Elizabeth and Cidney.

Wow! This is a tough one to handle. First of all my deepest sympathy to Donna, Scott and the entire Homschek family. I first met Fred around 1972 at the machine shop. In the years that followed there are so many memories! From running the stock car up and down the road behind his first shop, to fishing trips as well as many crazy nights out. Too many good times to write down here but there are so many memories. You may be gone but will never be forgotten. Rest in peace my friend!

His Life

Fred Homschek, aka Freddie, Wild Man, Space Man

August 19, 2018

Fred was pre-deceased by his parents Frederick J. Homschek Sr., and his mother Anna Homschek and his dog Max.  He leaves behind his wife Donna Homschek (nee Nalbandian) his sons Scott and Frederick J. Homschek III and Stepdaughter Nicole Woerner Heilbroun.  Also leaving behind four grandchildren, Victoria Homschek, Jeffery and Brittney Heilbroun and Jacqueline Homschek.  His four sisters and brother, Beverly DeMarino, Eileen Grooms, Michelle Broome, Kathy Fields and Wayne Homschek.  He also leaves his sister-in-law Doreen Nalbandian who assisted with his care. He leaves his sister-in-laws and brother-in-laws, nieces, nephews, cousins and his Aunt Rose and many friends. He also leaves his special friend Pam Gaffney who looked after and took care of him.

After graduating Brick High School class 1965 Fred started his career at RCA  Astro Space Center, Hightstown NJ as a Wiremen building wire harnesses for satellites and stayed all through their many name changes, as a Spacecraft Mechanic.  He worked on numerous government projects such as, TIROS, and DMSP.  The satellites were assembled by his team, and Fred was part of the launch team.

He also had his own business (Homschek's Precision Engine) at the same time he was working at the Space Center. He would go to his shop from 7:00am to 2:00pm, building competition race engines for Ocean Racers, such as Nick the Greek and Free and Easy and Stock Cars that ran at Wall Stadium.

Over the years he mentored many of the young man who wanted to learn about cars, building engines, especially Muscle cars.

He was a good man who was always willing to help others and had a huge heart.

A wonderful father, grandfather, and husband who will be missed more than can be expressed.

Recent stories

Fred, "The Man"

August 19, 2018

Fred was an unusual man with a huge heart.  My husband and I met him through Donna who has been a lifelong friend of mine.  It took me a while to get to know him but once I did, I knew why Donna loved him.  He was always loyal and the first to ask if you needed help.

When my husband who was in the Army Reserves was sent to Kuwait at age 58, Fred was the first person to ask me if there was anything I needed.  Every time we visited Donna and Fred, he would always ask if we had enough money to get home and ask us to call and let him know we had gotten back safely.  I always chuckled to myself at this since Rick is 71 and I'm almost 70.

I know for certain that he loved Donna.  She was always on his mind and he always wanted to be with her.   I can't even begin to say how many times he would call for her when he was sick and she would always run to him even if she had been in there a dozen times that same night.

He was a wonderful father and grandfather.  Whenever any of them wanted or needed anything, they usually got it but not before receiving a life lesson from him.  These life lessons, of course, extended to everyone.  We all just learned to accept them because they were from a place of love and a part of Fred.

I will always remember how he was with Max.  He loved that dog.  Max was a big baby and definitely he was the dog that got me over my fear of large dogs.  Fred loved when Pam's dog Chase would sit with him and when we visited our dog, Solly would do the same.  He would climb up in the bed with Fred and lay with him but when Fred was eating, Solly would just sit and stare at Fred.  Fred would always give in and feed him some of his food.  I think they both loved it.

The world was a better place because Fred was in it and we were all lucky and blessed to have known him and spent time with him.  Rick and I both loved him and will always treasure the memories we have of our times together.  The one thing we both wish was that we could have taken him to the Grand Canyon.  He really wanted to do that and talked about it often.

I know you are now free of pain and seeing wondrous things we can't even imagine. Thank you for enriching our lives.  God bless you Fred.
