The Golden Years with Family

November 25, 2012

Fred put a lot of time and love into his children’s interests. Daughter Sarah was encouraged to ride ponies at a very young age and built a career out of her equestrian experience. Colin was encouraged to embrace his love of computers, but enjoyed a common interest with his Dad, SCUBA diving in Hawai’i. Ryan was sent to ski school at an early age, supported in his sailing adventures, and allowed to pursue his dreams of traveling and living in different parts of the world. They shall miss him dearly.

November 25, 2012

During his Boeing days he saw as much of the world as a UN diplomat, mixed with pilots from all places and all cultures, and left an impression that none forgot.  Fred retired at the age of 60 as Chief Pilot of Flight Crew Training for the Boeing Corporation and was feted at a retirement celebration attended by the many people who respected this well-liked man.

Fred Meets The Love of His Life!

November 25, 2012

In 1973 Fred left Saudi and moved to Seattle as a flight instructor with the Boeing Corporation. Soon afterwards he met Bonnie Schults Renner through mutual friends.  She had moved to Seattle only one year prior from her childhood home of Salt Lake City. Bonnie and Fred fell in love, married in 1974, and celebrated their 38th wedding anniversary earlier this year. They shared their lives through good times and bad, compromising where necessary to accommodate the needs and desires of the other, dedicated to the welfare of their children.  Bonnie shall miss him dearly.

After the War he flew for North Central Airways, TWA, and Saudia Arabian Airlines on journeys that took him across the Midwest, throughout the Middle East, and across the world. Fred lived in Jeddah for 11 years, flying regional routes for Saudian Arabian Airways while training native Saudi pilots and enjoying scuba diving in the Red Sea.

Off to War

November 25, 2012

The Korean War brought the draft to his door.  Fred spent the next two years posted to Fort Campbell, Kentucky, as part of the Transport Army Reserve.  From the stories he told his family it seems most of that time was spent giving flying lessons through the Fort Campbell Flying Club.  Once again Fred was able to follow his aviation passion.

The Begining

November 25, 2012

He was born in Chicago on September 9th, 1933, to parents Bessie and Fred Lorenz, the last of four children.  Fred had a boyhood passion that guided his entire life: to be a pilot. He lived his dream, gaining his pilot’s license in 1949 at the sweet age of sixteen, washing small aircraft in exchange for the precious flying lessons necessary for his license.
