Prof! Time flies! Three years already! Always my mentor and encourager!! My husband and I still remember your comment - that I chose 'òkòlogy' rather than doing a PhD and life in Ife. I thank God for your life and that you remain alive in my heart through your memories and wise counsel over the years. Thank you, Prof.

I remember my great mentor, Prof Olawoyin, today and always. I'm happy to observe that his vision for a more significant impact of arbitration in Nigeria is on course, and his acolytes are doing great in the space. They will continue to honour his legacy by their actions, locally and internationally.

With each passing day,I continue to remain grateful for the opportunity to have worked with you and Dr Olawoyin SAN.

The lessons learned continue to resonate with me. The lessons of an analytical legal mind and the lessons of ethical correctness in a failing and faltering world.

Sleep on air. Continue to rest in peace

I remember Prof Olawoyin SAN today, the anniversary of his birthday. You were a teacher to many, both in Ife and while in practice; teaching us that law is not just about legislation but a projection of the ethical values of the society. You encouraged me to stand firm for what I believed was the ethically correct position, and I thank you for being such a wonderful mentor. When I weary of taking the ethically correct position, I think of you, and quote to myself Henley's famous lines:
"In the fell clutch of circumstance,
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed."

Thank you prof, for being who you were.

Just like yesterday, one year has rolled by since the call unto Glory of my brother and friend, Prof. Gabriel O. Olawoyin. Yet I am still reeling in disbelief that he is no more. I believe though that as he served the Lord with pure heart while on earth so he is sleeping in His bosom in heaven.
It is an understatement to say that I miss you. I miss the ‘banters’ we always shared together every Sunday @ the Cathedral and your prayer visits to my house from time to time.
Continue to Rest In Peace my brother.
I pray that God Almighty will continue to abide with your lovely family.

Words can not describe how much love I have for Prof. Olawoyin. The last time I met with you was in your house in Ile -ife in 2016 and before that time was also during my visit to Uniosun in 2015 when you were then the pro- chancellor. You were in the middle of the university Council meeting or so when you received my call that I was around. You brought me in and made me seat on your lap while the meeting was going on. LOL!. So, let me back track to 1979 when my mum- funmilayo Adefioye( may your soul continue to rest on maami) was pregnant of me and was also battling with what I later learnt was a cancer of the Nose.
Several Doctors have given up on her, especially the baby in her womb as they battled to save her life. According to history, Prof stood by my mum as she was been transferred from OAUTH, to LUTH to UITH and even back to seventh day Adventist hospital using his contacts and making sure she receives the best medical care around then.Thank you Daddy for allowing God to use you to preserve my life. I will forever be grateful for your kind heart. Adieu Prof, we love you but God loves you most. Continue to rest on sir.

To the wife and family of late Professor Gabriel A. Olawoyin, SAN
C/o Olawoyin & Olawoyin
1C Raymond Njokwu Street
off Awolowo Road, South West
Ikoyi, Lagos

Dear relatives of our dear colleague,

CONDOLENCE MESSAGE ON DEMISE OF LATE PROFESSOR GABRIEL A. OLAWOYIN, SAN

I am writing on behalf of the Body of Senior Advocates of Nigeria to commiserate with you on the demise of your dear husband, Prof. Gabriel Olawoyin, SAN. All of our members join me in expressing our profound sadness at the news of his demise and in offering our deepest condolences.

The late Professor Gabriel Olawoyin, SAN was a distinguished advocate who combined academic accomplishments with advocacy. He was an endearing and gracious person. Several generations of lawyers who had the benefit of his tutelage at the University of Ife will readily attest to his uncommon knowledge of Commercial Law. It is indeed remarkable that he was the first person to be appointed a Professor of Business Law at the University of Ife in 1978.

He retired from teaching in 1981 and entered into full-time legal practice as the Principal Partner in the law firm of Olawoyin & Olawoyin and played a leading role in the introduction and development of equipment leasing by Banks and other financial institutions in Nigeria. His industry and commitment to legal practice earned him the elevation to the rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria in 1998.

It is gratifying to note that our departed brother is leaving behind a worthwhile legacy for the legal profession in terms of his numerous writings and moreso when one considers that he has bequeathed to the profession a son of his ilk Dr. Adewale Olawoyin SAN, who has built on his goodwill and professional accomplishments.

We mourn his loss and will miss his fellowship at the Inner Bar. We pray that the Almighty God will grant the family the fortitude to bear this loss and also grant a peaceful repose of the soul of our departed colleague, Professor Gabriel A. Olawoyin SAN.

Yours Sincerely,

Seyi Sowemimo, SAN

Prof, you were an angel sent to the world and definitely to our family too. You stood by us as a legal advisor and a father figure when we lost our dad at a young age. Without taking a dime, you successfully defended and administered our late dad's estate. I will miss your advice and words of wisdom. You were a genuine man and an amazing father to a lot of people. Though Nigeria has lost a statesman, your excellent legacy will live forever. We love you but the Lord loves you more. May your gentle soul rest in perfect peace and may God Almighty strengthen mummy, Wale and the rest of the family IJN.

We give Almighty God all the glory for a life well spent.

Uncle, your life was filled with an abundance of divine qualities - Patient , yet firm , loving yet a disciplinarian, respected, dedicated and easy to talk with. You were humble ,filled with integrity, wisdom and a source of inspiration for many . Indeed a God fearing man with a passion for Christ. We have no doubt heaven has gained another one and is rejoicing today.

Yes it hurts that we see you no more, yes it's hard that every little thing seems to bring some remembrance of you, but we are rest assured that you lived a good life, you finished the race, you kept the faith and now sit at the feet of our Lord Jesus.

Uncle , the sun may have set in this world but you rise into the glorious light of the Living God.

1 Corinthians 15:42-44
So will it be with the resurrection of the dead. The body that is sown is perishable, it is raised imperishable; it is sown in dishonor, it is raised in glory; it is sown in weakness, it is raised in power; and it is sown a natural body, it is raised a spiritual body. If there is a natural body, there is also a spiritual body.

What a victorious transition ! And so we rejoice in the Lord today with shouts of praise and thanksgiving .

We love you always, but God loves you more.

Rest in perfect peace.

Brother Desiyan lived well, he has made such a positive impact on our very large families and also with Professional colleagues, Associates and friends.
I have taken a lot of interest in his memorial since his passing on the 13th February 2021. I have gone through the tributes and this has prompted me to do this memorable one on his remarkable life.
Some 22 years ago a consignment of goods imported by our company was wrongfully auctioned at the Apapa ports. The company chairman was Mrs Tejumade Aderemi Alakija a close elderly cousin (sister) of Prof Olawoyin. She believed that we could recover the goods which were so openly and criminally sold. But in spite of her connections and influence with top Government people non of her contacts showed any interest in her request for help. She therefore consulted Prof. She knew he was very intelligent and truthful. She said if it was doable Desiyan would oblige. And if it was impossible there would no empty promises. I was sent to meet brother in his office with a detailed brief. At the meeting he insisted I should come with the company's file from the inception of our operations. I did and he commenced work. I accompanied him on investigation visits to the Apapa ports and the NPA HQ in Marina a couple of times. He enjoyed tremendous goodwill as doors were opened for him and documents made available to him. Within a week he had obtained certified copies of all documents relevant to the transaction. These included customs clearance report/ Home Entry Form and documents of the NPA rent waiver and payments. These documents confirmed that the consignment had been cleared from the custody of the Nigerian Department of Customs and should not have been auctioned. He also obtained the Auction documents and therefore the final destinations of the consignment.
He called me to his office, and as Mama Tejumade has indicated about his character told me the truth, that is, we were not going to be able to recover the goods and that he could only fight for it at the courts. He was sure of victory and redemption with the assistance of the court. He however warned that it was not going to be easy to enforce court orders with Government Agencies and especially a revenue one such as the Department of Customs.
He refused to make any promises other than that he would give it all his best.
That was what he promised and what he delivered!!
This is a testimony to the strength of character of Professor Adesiyan Olawoyin. May he find a lasting resting place in the bosom of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Prof was a Quintessential Omoluabi

I met Prof after I graduated from Nigerian Law School in 1985, and his book on Nigerian Company Law preceded our relationship. He left the University of Ife the year I gained admission, so I never had the opportunity to learn Company Law under his tutelage, but his reputation as "igi iwe" preceded him. When I graduated from the Nigerian Law School, we became neighbors because my apartment was just two doors away from his house, at Orimolade Crescent, Ikeja. I had the rare privilege to live with a Legal colossus. Prof was a quintessential Omoluabi. He didn't treat me like a Baby Lawyer, that I was at that time, but accorded me all the respect as if we were colleagues. I must also mention Mama, Prof's wife, they were always together. We worshipped together at AVMCC for several years. When I got married to a fellow Lawyer, Prof and Mama were at our wedding and it was a delight to see Prof around at that time, a rare breed, not haughty or puffy, but an exceedingly jolly good fellow. He walks the talk. Honesty, humility, and uncommon integrity. The likes of Prof are fast depleting in the Nigerian society. He never craved attention, and he accorded my wife and me the respect he would accord any other person, always affectionately addressing me as "Lawyer". Prof, you left us, but you cannot be forgotten. Continue to rest in the bosom of our dear Lord. Wale, please accept our sympathy, you have a worthy legacy to emulate. Bimbo & Busola Okulaja

Uncle!!! I thought it was a false rumour when I first heard but alas it was confirmed to be true the next day. It feels surreal to me - You were such a permanent fixture in my life, especially my younger years - I think I subconsciously assumed you would always be there. I did not know that our telephone conversation in January would be our last talk on this side of eternity.

You were my second Dad throughout my secondary school and early University years. You and Auntie took excellent care of me through my many illnesses and never complained. You were always kind and generous to me and believed so much in my academic capabilities - you always challenged me to excel.

You were a great support to my family and close confidant and friend of my father, Deji Ilugbo. You excelled in all your endeavours and possessed one of the most brilliant minds I have ever met. You shared yourself and your genius with so many and impacted several lives. You will be greatly missed.

I thank God for your life and all you achieved. I thank God that I know you are safe in the arms of the One in whom you believed and who loves you the most.

Rest in Perfect Peace Uncle ❤️

The Quintessential Prof
  .
....You were indeed a father and a counsellor and I will forever miss your gentle words of wisdom and deep insights. Though we all would have wished you stayed on a tad more amongst us to enjoy the fruits of your labour. We are comforted by the words of Apostle Paul, "to live is Christ, to die is gain" You knew and loved Christ passionately in your earthly life and certainly the crown of glory is your gain. We remain thankful to the Almighty for the children and family you have left behind and your brilliant legacies that will continue live in them. Rest peacefully in the bosom of your creator my dear Sir. Goodnight, my Quintessential Prof.

A TRIBUTE TO A GREAT MAN

Proverbs 22:29; “Seest thou a man diligent in his work “, He shall stand before kings; he shall not stand before mean men.”

These plain yet inherently profound words encapsulate the life, times, and enduring legacy of Prof. Gabriel Adesiyan Olawoyin (SAN).

Being an Academic who embodied and lived by the virtues of diligence, godliness, and forthrightness, Prof. Gabriel Adesiyan Olawoyin’s (SAN) pursuits took him to enviable heights in his legal career and built a legacy that was as impactful as it was formidable.

In recollecting some of my chanced meetings and interactions with you, I fondly remember the first time I met you outside the High Court Igbosere with your son, Dr. Wale Olawoyin (SAN). In the ensuing introduction and banter, you expressed your surprise upon realizing that my father, Aare Afe Babalola (SAN), had a daughter who was a lawyer. Fortunately for me from that day on, it’s been nothing short of a valuable and deeply rewarding experience as a beneficiary of the exemplary and impactful life you lived in many ways and on many levels; for this, I remain eternally grateful.

While attending ICC meetings, I also remember the numerous times I met you and Mama in Paris when you were still the Chairman of ICC, Nigeria. The warmth, guidance and genial treatment you displayed towards all the Nigerian delegates despite the fact that you were much older than us was one of the things that endeared you to many. On a personal note, I cannot but remember the edifying conversations I always had with you even as you shared your timeless insight on the vagaries and conundrums of life.

You were so gentle, ever-smiling with a heart of pure gold, and always ready to go the extra mile for everyone.

It is without a shred of doubt or hesitation in my heart that I say you lived a life of honor and virtue, a life whose legacy abounds not in riches and possessions alone but in considerable value and impact on his peers, his family, his friends, his profession and indeed his walk with the LORD.

Thank you for believing in me and encouraging me in my legal career. I cannot speak of the success of my arbitration career without mentioning your name.

I will miss you so much - you were my mentor, a father, and indeed my friend. We will all miss your daily scripture readings and the hymns which you blessed us with every morning.

To Dr. Wale Olawoyin (SAN) and the entire family, I want to let you all know that we share just a small fraction of your pain. It is my earnest prayer that the Lord will ease your grief and grant you the fortitude to endure and overcome this loss.

May the good Lord console us all during this period as we bid farewell to a man whose life was never short of great moments and feats.

May your good soul Rest in Peace.

TRIBUTE TO AN ICON!

You were a Loving father to your children, a wonderful husband to your beautiful wife, a teacher to all your students and non-students. You were also a believer of Christ; this was evident in the way you lived your life.

Late prof. Olawoyin (SAN) was a professor of all professors and an outstanding legal luminary. He was a pacesetter, being the first professor of business law in Nigeria, he stood out in everything he did. His eloquence and mastery of the law was impeccable and classy, he was flawless, and I must say his exit has created a vacuum in the Legal profession.

My Prayer is that Almighty God, who he strongly believed in, would comfort his family, and loved ones, grant them the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss, as well as the strength to carry on his extraordinary Legacy.

May perpetual light shine upon you, and may your gentle soul continue to rest in the bosom of the Lord. Amen
Adieu Professor!

I write this with great sadness over the loss of a great academia, a consummate lawyer, an astute arbitrator and a great son of the Source Ile-Ife. He is a most reliable, dependable, courageous son of Ile Ife in particular and Nigeria as a whole.

Prof. Was a man who was carefully molded by sound legal traditions, a constituency which he greatly cherished, He was a gentleman par Excellency. His beautiful spirit will live on through his children, and they will always know how much he loved them. He tried with all his heart to stay for them, but God called him, and he had to go.

I wish you sweet sleep my dear brother. Your actions were always kind, a generous hand and an active mind, anxious to please and loath to offend. A loving son of Ile Ife, we will all miss you very much.

To the immediate family although it’s difficult to see beyond the sorrow. May looking back in memory help comfort you tomorrow.

Adieu great son of Ile Ife till we meet to part no more .

The passage of Prof GA Olawoyin, SAN, an older colleague and friend came as a rude shock. He was a past President of Band of Light, AVMCC, Ikeja where we had enjoyed fellowship for the past 34 years.
Prof was a great human being, a quintessential professional and an exceptional evangelist. He fed us with daily spiritual meditations in recent years. We shall miss his words of wisdom and encouragement but will have sweet memories of our relationship.
May Almighty God grant his soul eternal rest; comfort, uphold and strengthen his family, BOL members and all who mourn his passage.

Prof was not only my first boss but also a father figure, both professionally and in academia. I will forever appreciate the kind advice he offered at key moments in my life. Two examples that come to mind was when I needed advice on where I should go for my masters and on my PhD proposal. Both advice were spot on and I am forever grateful as they have led me to find my place in the legal world.
Prof was also very close to my family and attended several key events in my life, including my graduation and wedding. I will miss his kind and loving presence; and our gists where he dropped pearls of wisdom.
Adieu dear Prof GA Olawoyin (SAN). Rest in peace Sir.

Anyone close enough to me would have heard me mention the name 'Prof' innumerable times. Yes. As far as I was concerned, there was only one Prof. in the world. The one and only Professor Gabriel Adesiyan Olawoyin S.A.N. A mentor, guide, my principal.

He loved me like a son. He trusted me with assignments. He believed in me. I walked into the law firm some 21 years ago at LAPAL House as a young lawyer and the two years I spent with Prof. laid the foundation I have built my legal practice on. The law firm was a family: Prof, Oga Ayo, Doc., Alex, Daramola, Olagunju, Becky, Eno, Goz, Bimbo, Wole, Fisayo, Baba Fat, Oga Abbey, Kwesi, Albert.

The insane hard work. The spartan lifestyle. The boldness and courage. Standing firm in the face of adversity. The demand on you to be your best. Standing up in open court to judges he thought were overbearing or perhaps compromised. Treating sloppiness with extreme disdain.

Yes. I was his boy with a shared love for Arsenal and hard work. I had the joy of sharing flights, hotels, meals with him but more importantly I had the chance of learning about law and life from the very best: Prof. G. A. Olawoyin S.A.N. I also had the privilege of meeting my iyawo in the firm.

My deep condolences to the family he left behind

meeting Prof Olawoyin years back at the ticket desk of Virgin Atlantic Airways, my first sight was his doting on mummy. He would go back and forth to explain the prices and conditions to her and they will make the decision of what to choose together. Years after, he became 'daddy', he has interest in everyone's well being and relating with him was without ease. I looked forward to the daily devotionals he posted and it was humbling when he informed us towards the end of last year that he will stop sending them for obvious reasons. They spent so much money as excess luggage on their last trip bringing devotionals down to Lagos! in his words- they were more important than some of the other items they were bringing. Even my children have come to look forward to visiting him during summer. I celebrate a life of Grace and thankful to have met Prof in my line of duty. May God's peace continue to uphold mummy and the entire family. Rest on Prof... you have forth the good fight of faith.

A Time for Everything - Ecclesiastes 3
To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven; A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted… A time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance… I have seen the travail, which God hath given to the sons of men to be exercised in it… He hath made every thing beautiful in his time: also, he hath set the world in their heart, so that no man can find out the work that God maketh from the beginning to the end… but for a man to rejoice, and to do good in his life. And also, that every man should eat and drink, and enjoy the good of all his labour, it is the gift of God.

Prof Olawoyin SAN of blessed memory was a fine academic, consummate lawyer, astute arbitrator, firm but gentle leader, and a true gentleman. He nurtured me in my arbitration practice without taking any credit for himself. The membership of the Arbitration and ADR Commission of the International Chamber of Commerce Nigeria (ICCN) grew exponentially under his leadership, as did the number of ICC appointments that Nigerian members received.
I received my first ICC appointment under his leadership. He also gave me several responsibilities around organising the Commission’s conferences. I was so determined to please him or at least not disappoint him that on one occasion, I made every effort to return to Lagos from Khartoum on time for the commencement of the conference, only to be stuck in traffic on Eko bridge. I had to jump out of my car to take an Okada! I barely made it to Eko Hotel just on time, and he was beaming with smiles and said, “Tony, I knew you would make it.” When you have such a leader, who expresses so much confidence in you, you have no choice but to go out of your way to serve. I think I was privileged to have had him as my mentor.
I also recall his particular interest in me. He would call to advise or encourage me on some of my cases on many occasions. He was not just a legal colossus; he was a strategist with a fatherly mien. No wonder his scions are equally erudite professionals.
I would miss him greatly. Nigerian legal and international arbitration circuits, both academics and practitioners, will sorely miss him. He impacted positively on many lives. We must honour and cherish his memory. It is my prayer that he rests in the bosom of God Almighty and that his family takes solace in the admirable and impactful life he led.

Dear Prof,

I will really miss you shouting my name whenever you see me. It was always a joyful shout of “ Funkus” very loudly too. I was always so proud that you knew me by name and wanted everyone to know it too so I was always so happy to hear you shout my name. . And why? It was because you knew me from my earliest days in practice when I was working with Fola Sasegbon in the early 80s. You were and continued to be so easy, accommodating and soooooo accessible. You were always so young at heart which is why you always had young people around you. You leave behind a rich and enduring legacy and you did it so effortlessly. You are a hard act to follow but we will all try to make you proud.
Rest blissfully in Perfect Peace.

TRIBUTE TO A GREAT &  LOVING UNCLE: PROF.GABRIEL ADESIYAN OLAWOYIN SAN.
It is with deepest sorrow and sadness that i received the news of your passing on to glory on 13th day of February 2021 at exactly 08.30pm UK time and it was shocking to me , you were an uncle in a million, you were kind, loving, caring, and good at heart and soul!!! .I remember like yesterday how you encouraged me to further my studies up to university many years back and that really helped me a lot up till today, I also enjoyed all your supports during all my years in the university. I still can't believe I'm writing a tribute because of your passing. Words can not describe this difficult moment but if this is the last time I get to say goodbye then I know I will do so with the knowledge that I consider myself blessed to have lived this life as your nephew. God in his infinite wisdom knows best. Death is inevitable it's a journey that everyone must take often times we wish death wasn't a part of life, we wish we would just stay alive on earth with our near and dear , ones not dying. But unfortunately, we can not. I also remember many years back when I lost my first wife, I called to inform you about the ugly incident, you were sad to hear this, you asked my cousin Wale to join me at the wake keep and later came personally to see me at my residence not minding the distance and heavy traffic to condole with me I never knew you would show up. You were the only one who showed up to see me among all my mothers siblings. Same thing when I lost my mother ,you gave me your support. Uncle I can never forget you. I never knew I will never see you again after I visited you at your residence in ikeja with my first daughter on the day you turned 79 ,I was with you for close to 3hours talking and gisting I couldn't make your 80th birthday but we spoke on phone. The last conversation I had with you was in January this year ,never knew I wouldn't have opportunity to talk to you again , you missed my call and you immediately returned the call and we had a lengthy discussion.  I also remember when I told you that I was among the contestants to the throne of Ooni  October 2015 from my father side Lafogido ruling house, you were glad and you made it known to me I was more than qualified because both my mother and father sides are from ruling houses and I have what it takes, you gave me your blessings You were just a wonderful uncle. May God grant you eternal rest my dearest uncle. Adieu.!!!
Prince Adeyera A. Adenle.

Prof!

His Life

Early Life, Work Life & Spiritual Life

February 20, 2021
Professor Gabriel Adesiyan Olawoyin was born in Ile-Ife on 31 July 1939 to Mr Joseph Adekanmi Perry Olawoyin and Mrs Julianah Waleade Olawoyin (Nee Adewuyi) both of blessed memory, he was the second of three children of his parents. His father was born into the Giesi Royal Family of Ile-Ife while his mother was also a princess in the Oshikola Royal Family of Ile-Ife. His maternal grandfather, Prince Samuel Adetunji Adewuyi, the then Sooko Laekun of Ife, was the immediate senior full biological brother of the late Ooni of Ife, Kabiyesi, Alaiyeluwa Sir Adesoji Aderemi KBE.

Daddy was baptised in St. Peter’s Anglican Church, Iremo, Ile-Ife, on 2 November 1941, while he became a communicant at St. David’s Anglican Church (now Cathedral) Ogbomoso in 1957, during his secondary school days.

Following his primary education in the Royal School, at 135 Iremo Road, Ile-Ife (his maternal grandfather’s private school); African School, Ilesa; African School, Oke-Eso, Ile-Ife and Central School, Ilare, Ile-Ife, he went to Oduduwa College in September 1951 before proceeding to Ogbomoso Grammar School in January 1953. Daddy completed his secondary education in December 1958 when he passed the West African School Certificate Examination in the first division and emerged as the best overall candidate in Ogbomoso Grammar School which had a 100% success rate for its final year students in that year.

For a brief period in 1959, he was in Abeokuta Grammar School, Abeokuta where he registered for the Higher School Certificate Course. He was admitted to the University of Ibadan later that year for an honours degree programme in Mathematics and Geography. However, fate dictated his decision to opt for law as a result of which he left for England on 10 August 1961 for the proverbial “golden fleece”.

Between 1959 and 1961, Daddy worked as a Federal civil servant in Lagos, an accounts clerk with the Nigerian Breweries Limited, Iganmu, Lagos, a teacher in Origbo Community High School, Ipetumodu, Osun State and statistics clerk with Total Oil Products Limited in Lagos before he left Nigeria for the United Kingdom to study law. Following his success at the G.C.E Advanced Level Examination in London in January 1962, he studied at the London School of Economics and Political Science from October 1962 to September 1966 during which period he obtained the Bachelor of Laws and Master of Laws degrees of the University of London.

Daddy returned to Nigeria in October 1966 and immediately joined the University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University) as an Assistant Lecturer in Law on 1 November 1966. Between September 1968 and September 1970, he was on study leave at the University of Bristol where he got his PhD in Law in July 1970.

Daddy returned to the University of Ife in October 1970 as a Lecturer Grade II. A year later he was promoted from Lecturer Grade II to Lecturer Grade I. He was appointed Senior Lecturer in Law in October 1974.

Following the decision of the Council of Legal Education to rescind its earlier decision that lecturers who had taught law in any Nigerian University for not less than five years would be granted exemption from attending Nigerian Law School, he proceeded to the Nigerian Law School in 1974, nine years after obtaining his law degree. In June 1975, he was called to the Nigerian Bar following his performance as the best overall student in the Nigerian Bar Examination of that year, winning three of the available four prizes awarded by the Nigerian Law School that year.

Daddy’s first major experience as a practising lawyer was in 1976 when he represented the then University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University) before the Akanbi Tribunal, headed by the Honourable Justice Muhammad Akanbi, which investigated the circumstance leading to the collapse of the hostel buildings in that University.

Daddy’s experience/exposure at that Tribunal was the turning point in regard to his earlier resolution to launch out into full-time private legal practice. That singular, but crucial experience led to his firm decision to quit full-time academics for legal practice as soon as he clocked fifteen (15) years as a University teacher by 1981. Daddy’s fifteen years’ service to the then University of Ife witnessed a few interesting and sometimes heart-warming experiences which combined to assist him tremendously in his God-directed life.

On 12 May 1978, Daddy had the distinction of being appointed as the first Nigerian Professor of Business Law. From October 1980 to March 1981, Daddy served as the first Visiting Research Professor at the Nigerian Institute of Advanced Legal Studies (NIALS), Lagos. Daddy retired from University teaching in October 1981 since he was in full-time private legal practice as the Principal Partner in the law firm of Olawoyin & Olawoyin in Lagos till he voluntarily retired in 2016.

While in legal practice, Daddy served as a part-time lecturer at the Nigerian Law School from 1981 to 1982 and the Lagos State University, Ojo, Lagos from 1986 to 1988.

Over the years, Daddy served as either Chairman or Member of various Boards or Committees at the Local, State and Federal Government levels. These include the Chairmanship of Ife/Ijesha Zonal Health Board; membership of the Governing Council of the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs, Victoria Island, Lagos from 1984 to 1986; membership of the Consultative Assembly on the review of Company Law in Nigeria in 1990; membership of the Board of Directors of the Nigerian Coal Corporation from 1991 to 1993 and membership of the Study Group on Legal Issues relating to the Privatisation and Commercialisation of Government Enterprises in 1992.

At various times, Daddy was director of some companies in the private sector. He was the Vice-Chairman of ICC Nigeria for several years, a member of the Board of ICC and Chairman of its Arbitration Commission since its inception. For a period of eighteen years, from May 2000 to June 2018, Daddy was a member of the ICC International Court of Arbitration in Paris.

In September 1998, daddy was called to the Inner Bar as a Senior Advocate of Nigeria. From 2005 to 2016, he was Chancellor of the Anglican Diocese of Ife. The duties and responsibilities of that office gave him a world view of the activities of the Anglican Church in the spiritual and secular realms.

Daddy was Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of Osun State University from November 2012 to June 2015.

Daddy became a member of the Archbishop Vining Memorial Church Cathedral in 1983 and he was one of the foundation members of the Band of Light of AVMCC which was inaugurated in 1986. Daddy was a patron of six societies at Archbishop Vining Memorial Church Cathedral: a) Ambassadors of Christ Society b) Christian Morning Star Society c) Ladies Christian Circle d) Light of the World Society e) The Good Samaritan f) The Lord’s Vessel. He was a Lay reader in AVMCC, a member of the Intercessory Ministry and a Friend of the Choir.

In addition to his wife of over fifty-seven years, Mrs Agnes Arike Olawoyin (nee Oladini), Daddy is survived by his sister, Mrs Regina Ajiboye, half-brothers, half-sisters, children, grandchildren, cousins, nieces and nephews.

Daddy impacted many lives and will be greatly missed, but we are consoled by the fact that he is at peace with his creator and we would see him again on resurrection day.

  1. I met the great Prof Olawoyin at the Ooni's Palace  when I went to visit  Ooni Oba Okunade Sijuwade. He was so loving . He took me as a child almost immediately. We at Oduduwa University honoured him with a doctorate degree in law. I was also at his Parakin house after my contest as Ooni of ife. He said  " Mojukuro nibe. Omo yin o se agbafo ... ifes will see "  I also attended his 80th birthday in lagos. I never knew he was going home so soon. He must have seen baba Sijuwade to discuss ile ife affairs and how things are going on because they both loved ile ife to the extreme.  May his gentle soul rest in perfect peace.
