El Dr. Gamaliel L. Hernández, mejor conocido como el Hno. Gamaliel nació el 16 de Junio de 1938, en una pequeña ciudad llamada Matamoros de la Laguna, Coahuila, que se encuentra a unas 12 millas al este de la ciudad de Torreón, en el mismo estado mexicano.

Fue el séptimo de diez hijos; una hermana y nueve hermanos; Alfonso, Tabita, Isaías, Moisés, Neftalí, Eleazar, Gamaliel, Natanael, Saúl y Abel. Lamentablemente cinco varones murieron cuando eran pequeños, así que convivió con su hermana Tabita y sus tres hermanos, Isaías, Neftalí y Natanael. Su padre se llamó Margarito Hernández Rangel, hijo del señor Gregorio Hernández y la señora Juana Rangel, y su madre María Ruth Loera Rivas, hija del señor Leocadio Loera y la señora Raquel Rivas.

Aunque su padre fue inconverso por los primeros 24 años de su vida, para cuando se casó con su madre, él ya se había convertido al Evangelio, y formaron un hogar cristiano, así que el Hno. Gamaliel pudo contar con una de las mayores bendiciones que podemos tener, y es la de haber nacido en el seno de un hogar cristiano.

Recibió al Señor Jesucristo como su Salvador personal a la edad de 13 años y fue bautizado el 2 de abril de 1952 en el templo de la Primera Iglesia Bautista de la ciudad de Torreón, Coahuila, México, por el Rev. Encarnación Salce Sánchez.

A la edad de 17 años recibió el llamamiento del Señor para dedicar su vida al servicio de Dios, pero la atracción del estudio y la ambición de ser “alguien” en la vida fue retardando su respuesta y obediencia al Señor, hasta que Él obró en forma drástica para hacerle entender que le estaba llamando.

Fue en una reunión de la Asociación Bautista de La Laguna, en el área de Torreón, y en un pequeño poblado, de nombre San Felipe, donde pudo contestar “sí” al Señor. Estaba predicando el Rev. Roberto Porras Maynes, y escogió el pasaje de Josué l:5, en donde dice Dios a Josué: “como estuve con Moisés, estaré contigo.” Ahí supo que Dios nunca lo iba a dejar, sino que estaría siempre con él, así como había estado con otros siervos de Dios que habían dedicado sus vidas para servirle en la predicación de Su Palabra.      

Predicó  su primer sermón el día 10 de mayo de 1959 en una pequeña Misión Bautista, en el poblado de Ceballos, Durango, México. Su sermón duró como 8 minutos, pero los hermanos de ese lugar fueron muy buenos, y le tuvieron paciencia y así pudo crecer en el conocimiento de la Palabra de Dios, y en la exposición de la misma hasta poder hacerlo bien. Mientras pastoreaba la Misión Bautista en Ceballos, estudiaba su primer año de seminario, en el Seminario Teológico Bautista Mexicano de Torreón, Coahuila, México.

Después de estar por un año en Ceballos, fue invitado para hacerse cargo de la Misión Bautista de la Colonia La Campesina en la ciudad de Chihuahua, México. En esa forma podría continuar estudiando. A la misma vez que atendía a la misión, cursó un año de Humanidades en la Universidad Autónoma de Chihuahua. Gracias a Dios que la misión creció, pero solamente pudo estar en esa ciudad por un año, pues se le terminó una beca que tenía para estudiar.

Tiempo después fue invitado para tomar el pastorado de First Mexican Baptist Church en Imlay City, Michigan; una pequeña iglesia que estaba a una hora de lejos de la frontera de Estados Unidos con Canadá. Aceptó con gusto ese reto, sabiendo que Dios estaría con él, y por la gracia de Dios pudo ministrar en ese lugar por cuatro años y medio. Estando en esta iglesia contrajo matrimonio con una señorita que había conocido en un campamento familiar en 1955, cuando ella apenas tenía 14 años. Se casaron el 11 de enero de 1963. Su nombre era María Socorro Chávez Rodríguez, mejor conocida como la Hna. Socorro, quien fue la compañera de su vida por 46 años.

Mientras estuvo en Michigan, y pastoreaba la iglesia, tomó cursos en Detroit Bible College, y después en Eastern Michigan University, los cuales le fueron ayudando para formar su vida ministerial, así como conocer mejor la Palabra de Dios.

Fue en Imlay City, Michigan en donde aprendió a manejar camiones de escuela, y estuvo por un tiempo manejando un camión de escuela pública, mejorando su ingreso económico. Fue allí donde nació su primera hija Damaris.

En 1965 recibió la invitación para venir a California y ministrar con dos organizaciones: Frank Gonzales Evangelistic Association, de Los Angeles,  y con Instituto Evangélico, de La Puente, CA. Después de orar con su esposa, creyeron que Dios les indicaba ministrar en California. Llegaron a La Puente, el día 21 de enero de 1966, con muchos deseos de enseñar y predicar la Palabra de Dios.

Como administrador de la Asociacion Evangelistica de Frank Gonzáles desde 1966 hasta 1970 pudo coordinar viajes a través de Canada, Estados Unidos, México y Sur América para el Dr. Frank Gonzáles y su equipo de muchos jovenes, para predicar el Evangelio y dar testimonios y cantos en muchos establecimientos incluyendo hospitales, prisiones, palacios del gobierno, iglesias, escuelas y calles.

Al mismo tiempo, estando en el Instituto Evangélico de La Puente, ministrando como maestro y evangelista, Dios les dio otros tres hijos: Ruth, Gamaliel Jr, y Benjamín.

En 1974 tuvieron el privilegio de iniciar la Iglesia Bautista “La Esperanza Viva” en Baldwin Park, Ca. Estuvieron en esa iglesia por un año, y dejaron una asistencia de 50 a 60 personas. Después de algunos años de vida esa iglesia dejó de funcionar, pero un par de años después se reorganizó y continúa muy activa actualmente.

En 1975 tuvieron el privilegio de ser invitados para un campo misionero en Baja California, México. El Hno. Gamaliel sirvió como pastor de la Iglesia Bautista El Buen Pastor de San Quintín, Baja California, y  como capellán del Hospital El Buen Pastor, también en esa ciudad.  A la vez sirvió como misionero del campo alrededor de San Quintín, y abrió dos misiones nuevas, una en El Rosario, y la otra en La Mesa de San Jacinto. En la misión de El Rosario lograron hacer un pequeño templo, pero en la Mesa de San Jacinto solamente vieron algunas personas hacer decisión por Cristo. La mayor bendición que recibieron en San Quintín, Baja California, México, fue la llegada de Tabita Abigail, su última hija, y la única nacida en México. Ella ahora es ciudadana americana. El Hno. Gamaliel y su familia ministraron en San Quintín, B.C. hasta 1979.

En 1979 tomó el pastorado de la Iglesia Hermanos Menonitas en Parlier, CA, ministerio que duró solamente un año, ya que fue invitado de nuevo para enseñar y predicar en el Instituto Evangélico de La Puente donde ministraron por los siguientes 15 años, teniendo un sin fin de experiencias y viajando por muchos lugares llevando el precioso Evangelio de nuestro Salvador. Fueron varios cientos de personas que expresaron su decisión de recibir a Jesucristo en su corazón, como resultado de su ministerio en el Instituto Evangélico.

Fue durante esa segunda estancia en el Instituto de La Puente, cuando Dios le permitió al Hno. Gamaliel tener un ministerio de estudios por cassettes. Fueron diez años que mes tras mes publicó un cassette con una predicación, o un estudio Bíblico. Fueron por lo menos 120 diferentes cassettes que fueron publicados, y enviados a unas 500 personas cada mes. Se ha sabido hasta la fecha que esos cassettes siguen siendo de bendición para algunas personas en diferentes partes de Estados Unidos y Latinoamérica.

Dios le permitió recibir el Bachillerato en Teología en 1986, la Maestría en Teología en 1987, y el Doctorado en Teología en Junio de 1990 del Seminario Internacional de Plymouth, FL.

En 1991 tomó el pastorado de la Iglesia Bautista Fundamental en Los Ángeles, CA, aunque ya desde 1989 estaba ayudando a la iglesia con estudios Bíblicos un día por semana.  Y al quedar la iglesia sin pastor en diciembre de 1990, sintió que Dios le indicaba hacerse cargo de esta congregación, en la cual él veía muchas posibilidades de ministrar a la comunidad hispana. Allí vieron la salvación de muchas personas.

Contaron con  aproximadamente 20 hogares en los cuales tenían Cultos de Hogar. Cerca de 30 hermanos de la congregación esperaban las notas de su sermón cada Domingo para aprender mas; de esta forma muy sencilla se llevaba acabo un discipulado para conocer mas la Palabra de Dios.

Durante su estancia en Iglesia Bautista Fundamental, el Hno. Gamaliel motivo a la congregación a apoyar a varios ministerios en México incluyendo:

El día 19 de Julio de 2009 el Señor llamó a casa a la Hna. Socorro.

En Julio de 2010 el Hno. Gamaliel contrajo nupcias con la Dr. Elizabeth González Martínez. Juntos trabajaron en el estado de Puebla México ministrando en varias misiones y congregaciones por casi 8 años.

Estando en Puebla, tuvo el privilegio de comenzar un ministerio de Cds con mensajes Bíblicos y escribía para la revista digital El Evangelista Mexicano en la sección ¿Sabías qué…? El día 30 de Diciembre de 2017 el Señor llamó a casa al Hno. Gamaliel.

El Hno. Gamaliel y la Hna. Socorro dejan a 5 hijos, Damaris, Ruth, Gamaliel Jr, Benjamín, y Tabita Abigail; 3 yernos, Magdiel, Héctor y Jeff; 2 nueras, Lisa y Gina;18 nietos, Hiram, Juliana, Jaqueline, Selina, Mariah, Joseph, Zachary, Jason, Regina, Sonora, Daniella, Kasandra, Viviana, Isabella, Sophia, Benjamín Jr, Caleb y Madeline; 1 bisnieto,  Ronan.

Su versículo Bíblico favorito fue Mateo 6:33 y que dice: “Mas buscad primeramente el reino de Dios y su justicia y todas estas cosas os serán añadidas.”

Aparte de publicar 120 cassettes con mensajes y estudios Bíblicos, y otros tantos en Cds, el Hno. Gamaliel escribió 8 folletos evangelísticos y varios libros entre ellos:

Tuvo además el privilegio de visitar por tres ocasiones la tierra de Israel lo cual le llenó de nuevas experiencias, y las cuales compartió con muchos que le conocían.

Dr. Gamaliel L. Hernández, better known as Brother Gamaliel, was born on June 16, 1938, in a small town called Matamoros de la Laguna, Coahuila, which is about 12 miles east of the city of Torreón in the same Mexican state.

He was the seventh of ten children; a sister and nine brothers; Alfonso, Tabita, Isaías, Moisés, Neftalí, Eleazar, Gamaliel, Natanael, Saúl y Abel. Unfortunately five boys died when they were little, so he lived with his sister Tabita and his three brothers, Isaias, Neftali and Natanael. His father was named Margarito Hernández Rangel, son of Mr. Gregorio Hernández and Mrs. Juana Rangel, and his mother María Ruth Loera Rivas, daughter of Mr. Leocadio Loera and Mrs. Raquel Rivas.

Although his father was not a christian for the first 24 years of his life, by the time he married his mother, he had already converted to the Gospel, and they formed a Christian home, so Brother Gamaliel could count on one of the greatest blessings that we can have, and that is to be born in a Christian home.

He received the Lord Jesus Christ as his personal Savior at the age of 13 and was baptized on April 2, 1952 in the chapel of the Primera Iglesia Bautista of the city of Torreón, Coahuila, Mexico, by the Rev. Encarnación Salce Sánchez.

At the age of 17 he received the call of the Lord to dedicate his life to the service of God, but the attraction of study and the ambition to be "someone" in life was delaying his response and obedience to the Lord, until He worked in drastic way to make him understand that He was calling him.

It was at a meeting of the Baptist Association of La Laguna, in the area of Torreón, and in a small town, named San Felipe, where he was able to answer "yes" to the Lord. Preaching was the Rev. Roberto Porras Maynes, and he chose the passage from Joshua 1: 5, where God says to Joshua: "As I was with Moses, I will be with you." There he knew that God was never going to leave him, but that he would always be there. with him, just as he had been with other servants of God who had dedicated their lives to serve Him in the preaching of His Word.
           
He preached his first sermon on May 10, 1959 in a small Baptist Mission, in the town of Ceballos, Durango, Mexico. His sermon lasted about 8 minutes, but the brothers of that place were very good, and they had patience with him allowing him to grow in the knowledge of the Word of God, and in the exposition of it until he could do it well. While he was pastoring the Baptist Mission in Ceballos, he studied his first year of seminary, at the Mexican Baptist Theological Seminary in Torreón, Coahuila, Mexico.

After spending a year in Ceballos, he was invited to take charge of the Baptist Mission of Colonia La Campesina in the city of Chihuahua, Mexico. This would allow him to continue studying. At the same time he attended the mission, he studied a year of Humanities at Universidad Autonoma of Chihuahua. Thank God that the mission grew, but he could only be in that city for a year, because his scholarship had come to an end.

Later he was invited to take the pastorate of First Mexican Baptist Church in Imlay City, Michigan; a small church that was an hour away from the US border with Canada. He gladly accepted the challenge, knowing that God would be with him, and by the grace of God he was able to minister in that place for four and a half years. While at this church, he married a young lady he had met at a family camp in 1955, when she was only 14 years old. They married on January 11, 1963. Her name was María Socorro Chávez Rodríguez, better known as Sister Socorro, who was the companion of his life for 46 years.

While in Michigan, and pastoring the church, he took courses at Detroit Bible College, and later at Eastern Michigan University, which helped him to shape his ministerial life, as well as to better understand the Word of God.

It was in Imlay City, Michigan where he learned to drive school buses, and for a while was a bus driver, thus improving his income. It was there that his first daughter Damaris was born.

In 1965 he received the invitation to come to California and minister with two organizations: Frank Gonzales Evangelistic Association, of Los Angeles, and with Instituto Evangélico, of La Puente, CA. After praying with his wife, they believed that God was leading them to minister in California. They arrived at La Puente on January 21, 1966, with much desire to teach and preach the Word of God.

As an administrator for the Frank Gonzales Evangelistic Association from 1966 through 1970 he was able to coordinate travel throughout Canada, USA, Mexico and South America with for Dr. Frank Gonzales and his team of many young people, to preach the Gospel and to witness and sing in many establishments including hospitals, prisons, government palaces, churches, schools and streets.

At the same time, while at the Instituto Evangélico of La Puente, ministering as a teacher and evangelist, God gave them three more children: Ruth, Gamaliel Jr, and Benjamin.

In 1974 they had the privilege of starting the Iglesia Bautista "La Esperanza Viva" in Baldwin Park, CA. They were at that church for a year, and they left an attendance of 50 to 60 people. After some years of life that church stopped congregating, but a couple of years later it was reorganized and continues very active at present.

In 1975 they had the privilege of being invited to a mission field in Baja California, Mexico. Brother Gamaliel served as pastor of the Iglesia Bautista El Buen Pastor of San Quintín, Baja California, and as chaplain of Hospital El Buen Pastor, also in that city. At the same time he served as a field missionary around San Quintín, and opened two new missions, one in El Rosario, and the other in La Mesa de San Jacinto. In the mission of El Rosario they managed to make a small temple, but in La Mesa de San Jacinto they only saw some people make a decision for Christ. The greatest blessing they received in San Quintín, Baja California, Mexico, was the arrival of Tabita Abigail, their last child, and the only one born in Mexico. She is now an American citizen. Brother Gamaliel and his family ministered in San Quintín, B.C. until 1979.

In 1979 he took the pastorate at Iglesia Hermanos Menonitas in Parlier, CA, a ministry that lasted only one year, as he was invited again to teach and preach at Instituto Evangélico of La Puente where they ministered for the next 15 years, having endless experiences and traveling to many places carrying the precious Gospel of our Savior. There were several hundred people who expressed their decision to receive Jesus Christ in their hearts as a result of their ministry at Instituto Evangélico.

It was during that second stay at Instituto Evangélico of La Puente, when God allowed Brother Gamaliel to have a cassette ministry. For ten years, month after month, he published a cassette with a preaching, or a Bible study. There were at least 120 different cassettes that were published, and sent to about 500 people each month. It has been known to date that these cassettes continue to be a blessing for some people in different parts of the United States and Latin America.

God allowed him to receive a Bachelor of Theology in 1986, a Master of Theology in 1987, and a Doctorate in Theology in June of 1990 from the International Seminary of Plymouth, FL.

In 1991 he took the pastorate of the Iglesia Bautista Fundamental in Los Angeles, CA, although already since 1989 he was helping the church with Bible studies one day a week. And when the church was left without a pastor in December of 1990, he felt that God was leading him to take charge of this congregation, in which he saw many possibilities to minister to the Hispanic community. There they saw the salvation of many people.

They counted with approximately 20 homes in which they had Bible studies. About 30 brothers from the congregation waited for their sermon notes every Sunday to learn more. In this very simple way, a discipleship was carried out to learn more about the Word of God.

During his stay at Iglesia Bautista Fundamental, Brother Gamaliel motivated the congregation to support several ministries in Mexico including:

On July 19, 2009, the Lord called Sister Socorro home.

In July 2010, Brother Gamaliel remarried to Dr. Elizabeth González Martínez. Together they worked in the state of Puebla Mexico ministering in various missions and congregations for almost 8 years.

While in Puebla, he had the privilege of starting a CD ministry with Biblical messages and writing for the digital magazine El Evangelista Mexicano in the section Did you know ...? On December 30, 2017, the Lord called Brother Gamaliel home.

Brother Gamaliel and Sister Socorro leave 5 children, Damaris, Ruth, Gamaliel Jr., Benjamin, and Tabitha Abigail; 3 sons-in-law, Magdiel, Héctor and Jeff; 2 daughters-in-law, Lisa and Gina, 18 grandchildren, Hiram, Juliana, Jaqueline, Selina, Mariah, Joseph, Zachary, Jason, Regina, Sonora, Daniella, Kasandra, Viviana, Isabella, Sophia, Benjamin Jr, Caleb and Madeline; 1 great-grandson, Ronan.

His favorite Bible verse was Matthew 6:33 and it says: "But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness and all these things will be added to you."

Aside from publishing 120 cassettes with messages and Bible studies, and many others in CDs, Brother Gamaliel wrote 8 evangelistic leaflets and several books among them:
