What a wonderful man Mr Ferdinand was. He was humble and so very knowledgeable. Many years ago we used to spend Christmas and/or New Years Day as a family together. We had quizzes and I liked it when he was on our team. A guaranteed win! He always used to ask my husband, Nevil for his favourite song 'Searching' by China Black. I am so glad that Nevil managed to play it as part of his 90th birthday celebration. A lovely man who will and is sorely missed. May God bless his family.❤️

I moved in next door to Gerry just over 10 years ago and he was the first neighbour to say hello and welcome me to the area with genuine warmth and kindness. That became a theme, after that first meeting I would always enjoy speaking with him, so softly spoken and always a smile - there was a gentleness to him that shone through and spoke to his kind character and nature. I will miss him very much - Lorne road won’t be the same. Best wishes and lots of love to all the family. Dave

I have had the privilege of knowing Gerry for most of my life. One of my lasting memories of him was of him throwing down the challenge of a race down Lorne Rd. He did not challenge me again.

We argued or rather had discussions on many topics, (we both love a debate). We disagreed on many things, but we did not fall out on anything.

Gerry (my father-in-law) was an amiable, gentle, caring and loving man and I can truly say that I have never heard him speak ill of anyone.

He introduced me to Calypso and Soca music and we had many a laugh listening to the lyrics and the odd dance to the intoxicating beat.

I will be forever be thankful that I had him in my life and in all sincerity, that I could not have wished for a better father-in-law.

Gerry also called Gerro by my Dad, George (Alph) Gibbs was one of my dads closest friends.
I remember Gerry from early childhood with the Fabio’s and the constant telling of stories from Trinidad.
I imagine Gerry now up above with my dad and a good few others having a good lime in the other place. Talking about music, especially the latest calypso and politics and people they know. Smiling and happy. I hope that’s true.
Thoughts with you Judy May and I’m glad I have seen more of you in recent times.

It was always a joy to communicate with Gerry, my brother- in-law. Our discussions, though on serious matters affecting the countries in which we reside, would be light-hearted. Even during his recent illness, there were times we participated in the light banter. It felt good. I enjoyed visiting with him, whether in person or on the phone. Therefore, in 2015 when I passed through London briefly, Gerry was the only person I insisted on visiting.
He was proud of his family and took great interest in his grandson’s career. He would send me clippings and pictures of his achievements and in this way, even though there was great physical distance between us, I was kept abreast of the family’s movements and activities. His sense of family was strong and he included Andrew and myself in it.
I will miss him. May he Rest In Peace!

I did not know Gerry that well in Trinidad, until we met here in the U.K

Gerry always had a smile on his face, and was good for a laugh whenever you were in his company.

He will always be remembered by all who knew him.

Dear Judy-May and family, our deepest condolences on the passing of your father.
I can remember meeting Gerry for the first time in 1956, when he came from Trinidad to stay with his friend Horace Jeremy at a house we shared in Highgate. Myself and my husband Trevor, soon became friends with Gerry as we all struggled through those difficult early years in London.

Over the years Gerry remained a good friend to my family; he was always optimistic, wise, and knowledgeable on many different topics, and would offer good advice. Gerry was also humorous, loved being around family and friends, and loved his calypso music.
Gerry I will miss you.

I did not know Gerry in Trinidad. but got to know him through his Cousin Carlos. I appreciated his wisdom and kindness. through the years we became closer by our visits and when I moved to Wales we kept in contact nearly every week by phone, I valued his thoughts and searched him out when I was troubled or had any health issues.he also sent me lots of his notes on different subjects of which were valuable to me.I would miss you very much GERRY and my Wife and Myself send Condolences to Judy-Mae and the rest of the Family.

As a dear friend over the years his house became like the United Nations with friends staying passing through on their way to carnival. He was an amenable generous host, always pleased to see old friends and make them welcome. Glad to see them on their return home to different parts of the world and to enjoy hearing of their experiences. It has been a pleasure knowing you Gerry.

Mr Ferdinand was my neighbour. He was always open and friendly. I was impressed by his strength of character and sense of independence. I remember after his stroke seeing him shuffling down the street to the shops with a resolve to build his strength and regain his mobility. He was in his late 80’s. I found this very inspiring. He was a faithful friend of my husband Ronald Langton in the old days. Since Ronald's death, Gerry spoke to me regularly, boosting my moral with words of wisdom. Gerry was well known by many Trinidadians in London for his knowledge of politics, sports and current affairs. He will be missed immensely. I would like to extend my love and condolences to the ferdinand family, it's with deeper sadness to hear about the passing of my cousin Gerry.with sadness I remember the time we spend together as boys in Trinidad it's only memory know,that part of our life which change when he left Trinidad for England and I left for Canada I got together with Gibbs in Canada and Garvin in the U.S. but Gerry sometime I will still get a call from him .knowing that he is not with us he will be greatly missed, I pray that the angel will accompany him on journey home where the Lord would welcome him. Dear Gerry, so sad to hear of your passing.
I met Gerry when I went to work for Ind Coope back in 1975. He seemed to be a quiet man just getting on with his work but once you got to know him you could have a really good laugh with him. I have done quite a lot of knitting for Gerry, it seems that there was always a new baby that needed a new shawl and some matinee sets which I was always pleased to make. I also designed and crocheted a table runner for him of the Caribbean Islands.
Although Gerry never met my mother he always asked after her that’s how kind he was, such a lovely man.

Gerry has been a friend and a calm, kind, philosophical presence in my life for almost forty years since I started work at Ind Coope in Finchley, although our contact has been from a distance for the last thirty of them.
I really looked forward to my birthday and Christmas cards from him because they would contain a letter that had news of his grandchildren and their achievements and he always sent good wishes and such good advice for my son in his formative years.

To our dearest cousin Gerry, you were dear to us all. Although you are physically not here we know that your spirit lives on and you will continue to watch over us every day, unseen, unheard but still very much missed.
I remember visiting cousin Gerry and the family, he always welcomed us with open arms and a big smile, it was such a treat to visit him in London. Gerry was one of my late Dad's (Kent Quavar) best friends, so much so he was my Sister's Godfather. They were friends - I believe while in Trinidad - and continued to be friends here in London. From my Mother Sonia and myself - our heartfelt condolences to the family and friends.

My loving uncle Gerry was a man who was family-oriented. All the years I have known him(66years) he always has a smile on his face. I can't forget his sense of humour. Even when he was sick at hospital he didn't look it because of his positive spirit. One thing I must mention he didn't like the word 'never'. He will be dearly missed but I have the hope and confidence that one day in the future I will see him again in the resurrection (Acts24:15).

Gerry was Trini, of a character undisturbed by decades in the diaspora.
His social and political awareness led to him keeping up with developments and making thoughtful written contributions to the process of creating a new republican constitution for Trinidad and Tobago.
As my brother Carver, a great friend of Gerry (and of the apple tree overhanging his side yard) notes, Gerry was a stalwart of contented humanity.
He always was in an upbeat mood, ready to share humour and reminisce about Trinidad and Tobago.
He was indeed, “Trini to de bone”.

Mr Ferdinand was such a big part of our lives. He was always present at all Family functions and made a point of staying in touch to send seasons greetings to all.
Mr Ferdinand always made a point of reminding us that he shared a birthday with my Mother and Prince Charles!
He was a lovely man with a big personality.
He will be very much missed and always remembered.

They were such a nice pleasant family and mr. Ferdinand continued to send Xmas cards to my dear mother for which I am truly grateful. You will be greatly missed!

I first met Mr Ferdinand nearly 45 years ago when I became friends with Judy-May at school. On the occasions when I saw him, he always had a ready smile and wore a bow tie. When I saw him again at his 90th birthday celebration, I recognised his happy smile! It was great to see him having a good time, surrounded by those who loved him - family and close friends from home and abroad. I chatted with him a couple of times more recently when he stayed with Judy-May, and was struck by how cheerful and humorous he still was. It's clear that he was loved and respected, and will be missed. May his soul rest in perfect peace.

Uncle Gerry became family in 1982 and kept in touch through the years and the distance: never forgot to send me a birthday card in all those years. He was sweet , he was funny, he could talk up a storm and it was always a treat to visit him whenever we were in London. He will be sorely missed. Enjoy your final retirement, dear Uncle Gerry.

I have vivid memories of Gerry, however, I do remember him appearing as an articulate and forthright gentleman. He was always a discerning man, which left me with a feeling quite unfavourable to the exercise of my limited powers of speech.
Gerry, I believe, came from the ‘Old school’ in Trinidad, whereby if you had the ability, you would teach classes at a young age.
To best describe Gerry, it may be pertinent to reflect upon his drive and ambitions to ensure his family had greater opportunities than which, were not afforded to him.

The tears in my eyes cloud this page as I try to think of which of Uncle Gs talks meant the most or was it just the knowledge that he was always there to listen...teach...educate...Nataleah I've still got my newspaper clippings and a double helping of the same from my Dad (Bro Kelvin) to whom Uncle Gerry was an inspiration and a fellow Life & Living Socio Politic combatant...( and I'm the same age as your mother!!!)
It's hard to imagine Uncke G not here...however Uncle Gerry's outlook on Life and Judy May's peace with his present destination gives me immeasurable comfort...if I can beg the indulgence of the Family for that small favor...

I have been privileged to be nurtured by an incredible individual. He taught me right from wrong, how to respect myself and, in that, respect others. He taught me the value of family and friends. He showed me what the purest form of love is, never expecting, but always giving and sharing. He has left me with so many positives that I am full of peace at his passing because we never missed an opportunity to express our care, concern, respect and love for each other. I have been gifted to have these years with him in a bodily form and know that his spirit will always be watching over me and our family. My beloved dad Thank You for being there for me. GRAMPS what a legend you are, And always will be!
You always supported me and dame in any ventures we have chose to take we will be forever grateful for that .. this support consisted of 1000 cut outs from different news papers or books with our names written in permanent marker on the side.. just to make it clear it was for us!
heated debates on the do and don’t rights and wrongs the rules And regulations of LIFE are some of the memories I have growing up( also him talking in riddles) and having to work out what he was talking about often I would just nod wisely.
Your passion for life and love for music lives through your daughter, grandchildren and great grandchildren.. your legacy will live on. You always said ‘the sky is the limit’ now you are up there looking down this statement hits different. Always loved and will be forever missed ❤️

Gramps, I have had the pleasure of spending 20 years of my life with you. What a man, your passion for music and your love of sharing experiences and wisdom with us will stay with me forever. You always had a smile on your face that would light up any room. You will be truly missed.

Gramps, as I called him, was everything a grandfather was meant to be. Patient and supportive, but at the same time jovial and eccentric. Growing up, I always felt like he was my biggest fan. He used to say he'd shut all the windows and doors when I was playing cricket in case the opposition come running for safety. Never told him how encouraging his words were but I'm sure he knew.

He was so old fashioned. It was like a window into a bygone age sometimes, which was nice in many ways. Even until recently he would write to me (in the UAE), enclosing literally hundreds of UK newspaper cuttings telling me to read them to keep up with what's happening in the world (primarily the cricket world).

An unmistakable character and a very special man, who lived long and was loved. Rest peacefully gramps.

Gerry's life

Garwin Gerry Ferdinand was born on the 14th November 1929 in East Dry River, Port-of-Spain, Trinidad. He was the youngest of 7 children and the last sibling to die.

As a child he attended Nelson Street Infants School and then Osmand High School, both in Port-of-Spain. 'To the brave and loyal nothing is difficult' - was the Osmand High School's motto.

This bravery brought a 26 year-old Gerry to England by boat on 24th May 1956. He was among a generation of West Indian men, women and children to arrive in the UK between 1948 and 1971 for new opportunities. They were known as the 'Windrush' generation.

Gerry married Islyn Thomas on 18th April 1959. Their only child, Judy-May, was born in 1963.

The family moved to Lorne Road, Haringey, London in 1965. Both Islyn and Gerry lived there until death. Gerry passed away on 27th May 2021, at the age of 91.

He is survived by his daughter Judy-May Brandy, two grandchildren Damian and Nataleah and 3 great grandchildren, Maxwell, Jenson and Harlie.

Burial & donations

It will be a private family only burial with no service or wake before or after. For anyone who would like to pay their respects, the hearse pass down Lorne Road on, or shortly after12 noon on the day of the burial, which takes place at 1pm UK time on 22nd June.

The family would like to invite those who knew Gerry to light a candle, say a prayer, read some literature, or play music during the time he is being laid to rest.

The family have asked that expressions of sympathy in lieu of flowers can be made as donations to St. Clare Hospicehttps://stclarehospice.org.uk/ or the Whittington Hospital https://www.justgiving.com/whittington.

I would like to extend my love and strength to the family and loved ones.
Uncle Gerry was one of our House staples. He is my grandparents dearest And longest friend.
Uncle Gerry was always available to help and support you in anything. By leading you to your own learning and development. A proud active Trinidadian and humanitarian. Some of the spoils we as a group of people enjoy today would not have been possible without his input and dedication.
