God's Garden

God looked around his garden

I just stumbled upon this and learned of Gary's passing. I worked under Gary's leadership through the 80's at Tektronix as a mechanical draftsman in HFCD.

It would be quite easy for me to say that Gary was a role model in regards to work ethic, creativity and technical ability, and he was, but where he truly shined as a role model for me was in his humility, kindness, compassion and love toward others. I could see that Gary lived with God's love within him and through him. Not only did I see it, I experienced it! It wasn't just something he did because that is what we as believers in Christ are commanded to do, it was there happening within and through him all the time.

To this day at the age of 60, I still say that the best job I ever had was that job in HFCD at Tek under the leadership and loving kindness of Gary. I am just glad that I will see him and enjoy his presence again one day.

I think of Gary more often then I would have thought. It has been a year but it seems like yesterday. I miss Gary. I really miss Gary. A colleague, a friend, a real great guy! Gary, thank you for being a part of my life.

I knew Gary since my earliest days at Tektronix in the 60's. It is Gary who interviewed me when I was hired by Tek permanently in 1973 two years after my graduation. Gary was the kindest person one could ever know and it was joy to have him as a colleague for nearly 40 years. I will always remember the perpetual smile on his face. Gary was a brilliant engineer and did some of his finest and most creative work for Tek in the 10 years following his official retirement.  I am grateful to have been able to attend his funeral. I miss Gary greatly. I will remember him forever.

For over 20 years I felt so blessed to have worked with Gary. He was a friend and colleague and one of the most genuine, kind, thoughtful, and honest people I believe I’ve ever known. He was truly a man of his word and a man of God.

Gary was a great engineer and manager and highly respected by everyone who knew him. I always loved working with him and I felt Gary was like a brother to me. Over the years we spent a great deal of time together and we shared a lot about our families and just life in general. Gary loved his family and was very proud of them.

I had the utmost respect for Gary. I don’t ever remember him getting angry but rather he was always there to help others. He was indeed a blessing to the many lives he touched, including mine.

I will greatly miss Gary and I will never forget his presence in my life and the impact he had on others.

Gary was in my first group at Tek. I have always known him to be a great engineer, a man of good will, and great integrity. This world needs many more Gary Reeds.

Sharon, you are right. In the 40+ years I knew Gary, I can't recall ever seeing him angry. He had a great sense of humor and definitely enjoyed a good laugh.

I met Gary in 1982 at Tektronix, and from the beginning I found him to be a skilled engineer, an inspiring example, an effective but kind leader, and a great human being. I managed to work either directly or indirectly with him for 34 years, including the period of time he would occasionally came in as a contractor after retirement - a concept he never really seemed to "catch on" to. It was a good day when I ran into Gary and could both reminisce about the old times, and talk about the new problems we had to solve - as he was very good at doing both!

His presence will be sorely missed here.

To us at Tektronix Gary was The Man :-). His attention to detail and knowledge was incredible. We enjoyed working with him and will miss him something fierce.

My dad lived a humble life and didn’t boast about himself or his accomplishments. He lived his life putting the needs of others ahead of his own. He truly had the heart of a servant. He was patient and kind and rarely ever showed any anger. My dad lived out his faith every day of his life. He demonstrated the love of Christ that Paul wrote about in 1 Corinthians 13, “Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.”

I've worked with Gary at Tektronix since the 1990s and always felt very inspired by him as I witnessed how productive he was. Even in recent years, while other engineers his age were fully retired, Gary continued to use his amazing skills and knowledge to help develop effective designs, some of which have only just been released this summer. He was such a great friend and esteemed colleague who always was ready to give advice if asked, but so humble and easy to approach. We will miss him very much but I'll always think of Gary as a great role model for my own career and work ethic. I feel grateful that I was able to know him professionally and work on projects together.

Thanks You to Gary

Hi Reed Family,

I had the opportunity to work with Gary over the years starting in 2000.  Gary was an amazing engineer.   Not only were his designs creative and well thought out but he was always willing to help.   I will always consider him one of my engineering mentors and be a better engineer for having worked with him.

I got to shadow Gary before his retirement in 2004 and take over a project he was working on.  I was pretty worried to take on such an important project.  But as always Gary had set me up for success and I was able to finish the project.  During this time working with Gary I learned a lot and especially remember how he would make quick simple prototypes to test out parts of his design.   I have used this technique many times over the years, Thanks Gary! 

As other colleagues have stated Gary was very knowable on platings.  Several years ago we were working on a contact and had trouble with the plating and the shape of the contact.  I called and asked Gary if he would help us out.  He stopped in and over lunch he was able to get us straightened out and on track!  This help allowed us to keep on schedule and get the product out the door.  Without Gary’s help we would not have been able to do this.  I am not going to admit how much time we spent trying to figure out what Gary fixed over lunch!

Most recently Gary came in and worked on a large fixture for us.  This fixture was tied to a very important quick moving project.  Gary came in and designed the fixture and helped is keep on track. It was always nice to know Gary was on the project.   Next spring we were hoping to have him come in and help us with some relay and connector work.  His vast knowledge in these areas will be greatly missed. 

I was very sad to here of Gary’s passing we always enjoyed him being in the office.  He was a great guy and we will all miss him.

Hi Sharon,

I had the pleasure of working with Gary on numerous occasions and he was a super guy, extremely knowledgeable, kind and always very helpful.  He was my go to guy when I needed help selecting material finishes (metal plating) or just developing ideas.  We’d discuss the application, he’d poke around a little and then come up with some references that would guide me in the right direction.

 I’d see him periodically making his morning trip to Starbucks to get his coffee.  We’d stop and chat briefly and have a few laughs.  

Several years ago I jotted something on my whiteboard that now has special and ironic meaning.  He mentioned that he was taking Pravagen for memory and I told I had better write it down so I’d remember.  Again, more laughs.

He will be greatly missed by many for being such a great person, a great Mechanical Engineer and friend.
