Gary William Reed

Gary William Reed went home to be with the Lord on July 31, 2016. Gary was born in Aberdeen, South Dakota to William and Florence Reed on June 30, 1939. The Reed family moved from South Dakota to Denison, Texas in 1941, and then to Los Angeles, CA in 1948. Gary graduated from Compton High School in 1957. Gary and Marylin (Matthews) were married in on June 28, 1958 in Downey, CA. Gary was humble, kind and patient; a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother and uncle.

Gary worked full-time for Aerojet while attending college and raising two young children. Gary took classes at Compton College and California State University Los Angeles, earning his Bachelors Degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1965. Gary took a job as an Electro-Mechanical Engineer with Tektronix, Inc. in Beaverton, Oregon in 1966. He officially retired from Tektronix in 2004, but continued to do contract work until August of 2015.

Gary’s passion was music, and he was a long time member of the Beaverton Wind Ensemble and the Beaverton Community Band. He played the soprano, alto, tenor and baritone saxophones, as well as the clarinet and flute. Gary enjoyed creating and maintaining the websites for the bands he participated in, designing flyers for performances, and creating and distributing CD’s of the bands’ performances.

Gary is survived by his wife, Marylin, his children, William Reed and Sharon Sherman (Scott); four grandchildren, Tyler, Kaleigh and Mitchel Sherman, and Sheldon Reed (Lindsey); two great grandchildren, Allison and Stella Reed; two sisters, Marilyn Richmond (Rich) and Carolyn Taylor; as well as six nieces and twelve nephews. His sister, Linda Perez, preceded him in death in 2008.
