George Arthur Ebert, age 95, died peacefully at Ohio Hospice of Dayton on November 5, 2021. Born August 21, 1926, he was a 1944 graduate of Maple Heights High School who served in the United States Navy from 1944 to 1946. Following discharge, he pursued business studies at Fenn College (now Cleveland State University). He married Marilyn Jean Miles on September 10, 1949. After 66 years of marriage, Marilyn preceded him in death on December 15, 2015. Together, they founded, developed, and managed a GMC truck dealership while they raised three children, David George Ebert, James Ray Ebert, and Susan Lea Ebert Molloy. After selling their business in the early 1970s, they travelled the country extensively, buying and improving fine homes in Ohio, Arizona, Arkansas, Florida, and Tennessee. They provided their three children and eight grandchildren beautiful venues for family gatherings, and so many precious memories. The oldest of their 17 great-grandchildren also have early recollections of visits to Lebanon, Tennessee, Marilyn and George’s final residence together.
George was a creative and humble man who had a talent for solving problems and putting others at ease. He had a twinkle in his eye that cannot be captured in words. He made friends easily, and treated everyone he met with respect and dignity. His greatest strength was his work ethic. He never missed a day of work, and always insisted upon doing the job right the first time. He attended the final MHHS Class of ’44 reunion in 2018. He was also preceded in death by his parents Herbert Lee Ebert and Margaret Noll Ebert, and his sisters Norma and Marge.
Marilyn Jean Ebert (nee Miles) passed at age 85 on December 15, 2015. She was born in Jamestown, New York on Sunday, Mother’s Day, May 11, 1930 to Ray Petrie Miles and Emma Elizabeth Andregg Miles. Marilyn was a 1947 graduate of Maple Heights High School, where she enjoyed choir and also distinguished herself by taking shop classes, unheard of for a girl in those days. She worked as a switchboard operator before marrying George in 1949.
Marilyn was an understated but exceptional person, who never ceased to amaze friends and family with her talents, crafts, and creativity. Anything she tried her hand at, she mastered. Marilyn centered her entire life around her marriage, her three children, her eight grandchildren, and her great-grandchildren. She was an early adopter of digital technology, and used it to remain in touch with family and friends up until her very last weeks. She celebrated her 66th wedding anniversary with George on September 10th, 2015.
Marilyn’s sister, Lois Catherine Miles Ruzicka, went on to pass December 18, 2021 in Tucson, Arizona.
The ashes of George and Marilyn Ebert will be interred together in the Bedford Cemetery, Bedford, Ohio. Gifts to honor their memory can be made to Ohio Hospice of Dayton, the American Cancer Society, or the American Heart Association.
