His Life

My Man of Courage & Character

May 14, 2012

Yes, Above "Five" words, describes Brother George Garcia, since birth of 8 Jun 1928, George showed Mother Charlotte Garcia, he was truly a person of spirit, vim, life, full of zest, enthusiasm, with-a-backbone-as-well, "even-grit", surviving his light-birth-weight, to become "everybody-who-ever-met-George, their individual Hero!
I thanked George Garcia, for all the goodness, kindness, honesty and warmth
of being a younger brother he shared, with me, over my recent 77 years of life.
Brother Gene and I, always felt safe, and secure that George was our instant protector, in Esparto town, we both would tell our 5th grade friends, our Brother George is the Halfback on the Esparto Spartans Football Team, what does you old brother do?
Our tiny Grade School, was next to the High School Football Field, so both of us missed some of our classes, to sit under the stands,to watch both Brother George and Gilbert practice their Football, so their Coach wouldn't see us.
During their summers, both had jobs,in the local area and George would shell-out eleven cents to us, so we could Jog, like George, as we saw him practice his Track practice, and he would sometimes "time" us as we ran to Shorty's Shell Station and back.  The curious thing was he was never there when we returned, but he would say, 22 minutes is good time, so he is your 11 cents! We didn't realize the  difference, at ages 10 & 12 as we were, during 1944!
During that year, both Geo & Gil participated in a High School Boxing Show, which had 12 bouts, with George entering the Ring for the second bout, George some how, selected the name of "Hitchhiker" preceeding George's name, he showed spunk in that bout, don't you know?
As a physical strong youth, George was blessed with an excellent "Adonis-type"  physique. During one summer session, as George was swimming at the local swimming river, a "Help Sound", came from the river, George jumped in and pulled a 14 year old youth, named Frenchie, to the shore for safety!, George also was employed loading Hay-Bailing Machines in the local Esparto Fields.  Grabbing those 55 lbs of wire-bound bales of fresh-cut hay, and heaveing them upward 4 to 5 feet, for pay purposes.
As an outstanding Athletic.for Esparto High Sports, George was awarded a 4 year Letterman "E", for his Football, Track, Boxing and Basketball skills.
